Friday: NCAA Interlude

We’ll have some time to talk today when the 2:00 games conclude on the network, and the Big Ten Network’s Dave Revsine will join us around 4:20 to discuss the action so far.

Let’s hope that, by that point, we will have something compelling occuring in the NCAA Tournament.  When Jim Calhoun’s serious stomach ailment is a storyline, that tells you something about the basketball — which has been ok, at best.

Illinois?  Blech.  If you’re about to make the but-Chester-Frazier-didn’t-play argument, just…don’t.  WKU is better than Illinois.

On other fronts, Lovie Smith sure seems willing to put himself out there with this year’s team, and it’s refreshing.  He is saying, essentially, that we should expect the Bears to be better because he’s going to make them better.  Fine with me.  And the WBC is now just a joke — David Wright hurt his toe, Kevin Youkilis is in a walking boot, and Phil Rogers is sounding like Baghdad Bob.

Remember that round two of the Tournament of Bad resumes Monday!

I’m hoping the day comes when ALL the players in MLB tell Bud Selig what he can do with his WBC. I will absolutely love that.

I found one thing Orton does one thing better than Cutler.

Nicely done Frasier. Western Kentucky was never in danger of losing while they had the inspirational powers of that giant red blob of a mascot.

the Bears have one of the more simpler offenses in the league and Earl Bennett had trouble picking up the plays and terminology? Imagine if Mike Martz was O.C> or Todd Haley or NORV Turner, or Mike Holgrem or Mike Shannonhan or Jon Grueden? Hey Earl, your either running a fly, slant, out or a digg, maybe an occasional post(unlike myself who makes frequent posts). There, i got the offense down. No double moves, no skinny post, no option routes, not a lot of shifting and motion and a whole lot of blocking. Was that really hard for a Vandy grad?

Or was the coaching stuff not getting their point across? I’m not hearing that possibility. I’m sorry, but I am not a fan of Lovie Smith and his coaching staff. I don’t want Ditka back, or anybody with that “fire and passion” ****. But I seriously do not think Smith has the answers here. And I know Jerry Angelo doesn’t help the situation too.

As much as I dislike it and know it’s a Pud Selig creation and an injury risk, I have to admit to having followed the WBC. I want the US to win for some reason and that 9th inning win was fun (and that story about the soldier after the game was ginuinly touching). I wish I didn’t want the US to win (mostly I justify liking it because no Sox, besides Thorton, are in it) and I agree with all of the arguments against it, and I wouldn’t miss it if it stopped and went away, but it is kinda fun (runaway meatball! Runaway meatball!!!!)

Thank you Bernsie for saying it! Yes, Western Ky. was the better team. In a best of 10, the Hilltoppers beat IL 7 times, at least. Why they were a 12 seed and IL a fraudulent 5th has everything to do with the perception of the conferences they play in.
The bigger story as far as Illinois is concerned should be why are these guys playing in the tournament this weekend, for OTHER teams? Jon Scheyer, Sherron Collins, Jeremy Pargo just to name a few of a long list that didn’t want to play for Bruce Weber. Aside from succes with Bill Self’s recruits, Webber has shown no ability to recruit a real difference maker for the program. And spare me the Alex Legion love.
Webber’s future is certainly riding on Brandon Paul and Jereme Richmond. Illini fans, are you willing to wait?

Off topic, doesn’t the starting center field position for the White Sox have to go to Anderson simply due to the insufficiency of the defensive abilities of every other starter? If indeed the Sox will score enough runs, as Dan and Terry have said many a time this spring, don’t you just have to bite the bullet at the plate, live with his .277 OBP and just put him out there for his glove?

the general concesus out here in central IL, NOBODY IS SUPRISED THE ILLINI LOST!!!! i wonder if the McCasky’s are boosters to U of I because that’s how they run their atheletic department, like a McCasky operation. Got cheap marginal coaches who make an occasional run and bad recruiting and a malaise about everything, but hey, look at our new facilities!!!(practice not game). Look at our new skyboxes and our shiney new I hotel!!! ridiculous

The Illini have some talent, but no “money players”. If the top recruits dont pan out next year, Weber’s gone.

Chief Wacalot
Mar 20, 2009 11:47

If you combined Weber’s game coaching ability and Zook’s recruting ability, you would have a hell of a coach!

Chief Wahoo
Mar 20, 2009 12:09

Zook is OK at recruiting, don’t fool yourself, U of I football recruiting is better with zook than Ron Turner(which should tell you something about the Bears talent evaluation abilities if he is the one telling JA what he needs offensivly) but being a top 15-25 recruiter will get you some bowl games but not the one that matters. in basketball you can recruit top15-25 and by the way Basketball is, you might end up a national champion or you might end up in the CBI. Basketball is a much funnier sport in that regard.

sox writers and bloggers have posted a few options for the leadoff guy, assuming anderson wins the job.

anderson would leadoff vs lefties
getz vs righties

or

fields vs lefties.

.359 OBP in the minors for fields, and apparently hes ‘fast’ again because of offseason surgery. ill believe it when i see it, especially since hes a 25 hr guy.

another rumor i heard was skip schumacher, who is failing to make the conversion from CF to 2b for the cards.

why not trade richard/marquez/broadway/egbert straight up for this guy? STL has a surplus of OF, but there options are actually good. i could live with a sch/BA platoon.

another rumor i heard was…………………….. Kenny lofton. why would they sign him now when they could have had him all spring training? hes probably at best a glorified dewayne wise right now. HELP ME TOM CRUISE!

“Bernsy”, you didn’t have a lot of time to work with today, but I enjoyed the chat you had with CBS Sports’ PBP voice Kevin Harlan when you were on in between games of “The SCORE’s” continuing coverage of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Kevin’s one of the most excitable voices in sports today, and it’s always good to hear him call a game. I didn’t think it was that big an upset to see Western Kentucky beat Illinois late last night in Portland, OR. Besides, where have the upsets been? Yeah, schools like American University, VCU, North Dakota State, ETSU, Cal St. Northridge & Morehead State gave the big boys with Villanova, UCLA, Kansas, UCONN , Memphis & Louisville all they could handle, but none of those lower seeds could finish the deal at the end. I’m still reminded of what Seth Davis said as soon as Greg Gumbel made the announcement Sunday night on the “Selection Show” and CBS showed the folks at Western Kentucky celebrating their selection in the 65 team field. Seth said on the spot that he felt WKU would beat the Illini, and not only was he right on the money, but the game wasn’t as close as the final indicated. .

Duce Bigelow, what the hell are you talking about? First of all, when has Guenther ever intimated that Weber’s job is at risk? Second of all, there are no “top recruits” coming next year. Brandon Paul is no where close to a blue chipper. The real recruits are coming in 2010 with Jereme Richmond and Luther Head’s brother. And I’m sure the team will be fine. Bruce’s problem has never been coaching. So as long as Richmond and Head put on an Illinois uniform, mission accomplished.

Btw, youtube Jereme Richmond halfcourt shot. That was insane.

I know this a little off topic, but did anyone see who the bears signed? A safety that hasn’t been in the NFL for two years and was a bust with the Texans. Between this guy and Bullocks from New Orleans, I can see why they didn’t want to take a chance on Mike Brown. These are guys that are top notch talent… if the AFL was still around. Can’t wait to see who Angelo signs next…Jim Miller, Henry Burris
