Boers and Bernstein Show - Written by Bernstein on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 9:32 - 59 Comments

An Hour on Wednesday

The issue is not whether the Bears should explore a trade for Jay Cutler.  Available 25-year-old Pro-Bowl QBs are to be pursued.  The issue is whether or not the Bears can offer anything more attractive than what all the other teams are offering.  The good news is that the Broncos’ announcement of a desire to trade him lowers the market.  This could be one of those cases where we are all shocked at how little it took to acquire him, or the opposite occurs and salivating teams drive up the auction price.

Please end the campaign for Tyrus Thomas as an NBA All-Defender.  Blocked shots are fun and all, but no team as porous as the Bulls should be represented by an individual player on a list that honors defense.  Poor Derrick Rose got spun around repeatedly by T.J. Ford last night, and even Josh McRoberts (!!!) was flying around the basket.

We’ll do “Who You Crappin?” tomorrow at 5:00, and we’ll be out at Red Ivy in Wrigleyville on Friday for the Bud Light “Who Needs Two?” Tavern Tour.

Other than surrendering their top 3 picks in this years draft and a number one next year what exactly would the Bears have to offer Denver of value? Please, I heard one radio moron down the dial this morning suggest their number one pick, Urlacher and Hester for Cutler. Does he think the Broncos were asleep last year and missed how far Urlacher and Hester have fallen? Cleveland has Quinn or Anderson to offer, and Braylon Edwards and Shaun Rogers as well as draft picks. Detroit has many picks including the top overall. Washington and Carolina and the Jets have more to offer as well. Unless Angelo is willing to give up mucho draft picks, and it says here he should but won’t the Bears won’t come close to landing him. And please, enough with the Pro Bowl hyperbole on Cutler. If Brady’s healthy Cutler never makes the Pro Bowl, not in a conference with Manning, Brady and Rivers. Come on, even Favre was named to the Pro Bowl this past year!

if i am derrick rose, i am working on my defensive footwork and patience all summer long. Maybe hook up with TJ Ford and just play him one on one until you learn to stop him, i guarentee you he is stopable and you aren’t Derrick.

Back to yesterday: i think there is a common misunderstanding about something from sports fans. They refer to things like Fire and Passion and Intensity, and they are mistaking it for Focus and Concentration. If Tyrus Thomas FOCUSES AND CONCENTRATES he plays well. If he is out in LALA Land like he is everytime they aren’t playing a top shelf team and/or on National TV, he plays like a moron. It has nothing to do with fire and intensity, it has to do with PAYING ATTENTION and concentrating. If the blackhawks lose 4-0 to Vancover, it’s because they had their brains on somethign else. They didn’t pay attention to detail and got caught with their pants down. Not because they didn’t have the fire in their belly, they have shown all year they have that. In baseball, if you come to the plate all fired up to hit a homer but aren’t focusing and concentrating, you won’t even make contact. Maybe adreneline can assist in concentration in a givin moment, but it still comes down to the brain sending singals to the eyes, hands, arms, legs and feet at the right time, and if the brain isn’t there, all the fire and passion is all for naught.

Flynn, 4000+ yards is 4000+ yards. If you honestly think KO can throw for 4000+ yards then i guess your point holds water. But i think Kyle’s ceiling is right around 3300 yards and won’t ever get probowl consideration.

I am no football genius, but there is no doubt about it….JAY CUTLER IS A BETTER QUARTERBACK THAN KYLE ORTON…PERIOD…END OF STORY. Jerry Angelo should do everything in his power (and withing reason) to land him. A first, a third, Orton, and Urlacher is all they would need to deal. Orton is in the last year of his contract anyway…Urlacher is depreciating as much as Terry’s mobile home in FL. They can pick up a receiver in the 2nd round this year…even if they decide to sign another tackle in the free agent market. Yeah Cutler made the Pro Bowl…that’s not the point…He’s just simply better than Orton. He can easily set this team up for the next 10 years.

ok here’s my final take on the whole QB thing. If the Bears try and get beat by a team that has more to offer, i am OK with it. It’s not that KO is this god awful QB, he just isn’t great. He CAN lead to victories and he has no fear pounding the ball into the endzone(a la the Atlanta game), but if we DO GET HIM, i am doing backflips.

Flynn
Apr 1, 2009 10:41

Of course Cutler is better than Orton, and the Bears should try and get him. I’m only pointing out they don’t have as much to entice Denver into making a deal as other teams do. Chico, you say a first, third, Orton and Urlacher is all they’d need to land Cutler. Denver wouldn’t do that in a million years. You yourself go on to say how much Urlacher’s skills have declined plus he takes up a ton of cap space. Orton is pedestrian at best, Denver probably has QB’s in camp right now as good as Orton. The Bears first pick overall is the 18th, big deal… Bears fans, you would be shocked if you really knew what GM’s around the league think of players you perceive to be great offers to other teams, i.e. Urlacher, Hester, Orton. Nobody would give you a top draft pick for any of them right now!
The Bears do have enough to get Cutler. And it’s draft picks, many of them from this year and next. But with Angelo’s track record of hording picks do you really believe he has the stones to pull it off?

Matt Abbatacola’s blue tooth (formerly Sore Throat)
Apr 1, 2009 10:48

if he signs pace, he is going after cutler. Make the connection. He wouldn’t over pay for an aging o tackle if it weren’t in the guise of making a top notch qb feel like he will be protected if he comes here.

Matt Abbatacola’s blue tooth (formerly Sore Throat)
Apr 1, 2009 10:50

we got that point of your argument flynn but you went on your probowl diatribe, I for one just wanted to remind you he throw for well over 4,000 yards( i think it was 4300 or something like that) and Orton threw for 2900. I think if you make the probowl and you threw for over 4000 yards, you probably earned it Brady being injured or not.

The Bears telling everyone that they have contacted the Broncos to inquire about Cutler is a joke. The Bears are feeling the pressure from fans to actually sign a top flight QB after many years of medicrity. Now when Cutler is traded to the Vikings or Bucs the Bears can say that they tried to get him. It’s all BS folks. And what the H e l l would Ron Turner & Pep Hamilton do with Cutler, other than let him die a slow death here? Having said that, the Bears must give up whatever they can to get Cutler,,,Urlacher & a #1 draft pick might get it done. Brian is almost washed up & he is a cancer in the locker room.
The Bears have missed the playoffsd 2 years in a row & are 16 – 16 the last 2 seasons, with an offense that is horrible. Cutler & Pace would sure be nice wouldn’t it? Pace will happen…Cutler is a smokescreen pie in the sky dream. Cutler will be the Bears nemesis in Minnesoata for the next 10 years.

Flynn…I agree with you that Orton is pedestrian at best, but again he is in the final year of his contract…The Broncos would dump him anyway at the end of the year. They (The Broncos) would have a stock of QB’s on the roster just like the Bears have right now so it doesn’t really matter who is throwing the ball. If they don’t take Urlacher..just throw in a 3rd or 4th in next year’s draft…done! The only team that would be in serious competition with the Bears are the Browns. Brady Quinn would be a much better solution for the Broncos than Orton of course. I hear that the Jets are serious contenders too, but Kellen Clemens is on the same short bus as Orton. I think the Bears can make this happen…only if they want to. I see the Broncos dealing Cutler outside the conference and seeing him land in the NFC North…not with the Lie-Downs or with the Vikes…but with the Bears…wishful thinking.

It’s more likely Denver will opt to trade Cutler to an NFC team rather than an AFC rival. Washington and Dan Snyder will probably get him, but about half the teams in the NFC would be interested. Somehow, I don’t think the Bears have the imagination to put together the best deal.

The Bulls defensive woes will be solved next season when they draft the bleedy Hansbourough. He will be teamed with Aaron Gray in the post to form the vaunted “13.5 foot wall of ****”.

The Bears will also wait until 2010 when they can give the offense to the “chosen one” Tim Tebow thus causing Terry’s head to explode and Dan to move to Canada so he could talk hockey 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

Mike in South Loop
Apr 1, 2009 12:20

This is Sam Smith’s summary of the Bulls-Pacer’s game and why Tyrus is a poor defender and will never be a good player in the NBA as opposed to the Trib’s K.C. Johnson’s turdish analysis:

“If you are going to guard anyone at a time like that, it has to be Granger, who is Indiana’s scoring leader and top three point shooter. But Tyrus got lost again waiting in the lane for Ford and Granger got wide open and made the three. There’s a lot more to basketball than just making the plays.

It’s also thinking the game. A good shot isn’t just when you are open. It’s when your teammates are in position to rebound and to get back to defend. On defense, you identify who is most likely to shoot and you stay with those guys. Troy Murphy, Jarrett Jack and Brandon Rush also were on the floor then with Ford and Granger. Yet Granger was the most open.”

Chico- Does Urlacher actually have any value to other teams? Everyone I hear seems to think he commands great value in a trade, and I’m not sure that’s the case. He’s certainly on the downside of his career, and sliding fast. Denver is going to go to a 3-4 defense ala New England as McDaniels will want to mimic his mentor Belichick. If there’s anyone on the Bears defense that might appeal to Denver and their new defensive scheme, it might be Tommy Harris, provided he’s healthy. A big if. If I”m Denver I look to Cleveland. Derek Anderson, Baylon Edwards, Shaun Rogers can all be had. And don’t forget, Denver signed Chris Simms, is he any worse than Orton?
Blue Tooth, your comments are always welcome, just sometimes you react so quickly you have 3-4 posts in a row, and maybe that frustrates some others to chime in…

Matt Abbatacola’s blue tooth (formerly Sore Throat)

depends on Urlachers responsibilities. Coverage, roaming side to side, pursuing open field runners, he has MUCH VALUE. running downfield taking on blockers, Hillenmeyer has more value than Urlacher does. In a 3-4, i don’t know what his responsibilities will be, in the 4-3, he is no longer sufficient at his role of downfield attacker at the Middle Linebacker slot.

Hey GambirRF…

The so called ‘Meatball” Hockey fans have more Hockey knowledge in their little finger that Bernsy has in his entire body. Maybe Bernsy should put together the G A Y Hockey league…or the G A Y Football league…in those leagues you would have no physicality or toughness…just the way Bernsy likes his sports. He thinks all spoorts should be about finesse. I have a news flash for Bernsey…there are no successful finesse tema in the NHL, NFL, or NBA. Teams that have no toughness & dont practice and hit hard, lose…period. The reason the Bears are a soft team now is because Lovie runs the easiest country club training camp and practices in the league. Just ask players who have signed with the Bears recently like Kevin Jones, His second day in camp he was interviewed and he made a comment about how he is used to a lot more hitting & running in practice and that the Bears run a low-contact non-physical camp and practice.
If you want to call that Meatball, thats fine…the reality is that ***** athletes & coaches lose.

Do any of you honestly think Angelo will even make a true attempt to acquire Cutler, or will he try to lowball the Broncos, knowing that they wont accept? Then I can see Jerry stepping out saying they attempted to acquire Cutler but Denver chose to go in another direction. Jerry doesnt believe in taking risks (except the injury risks – hello, Chris Williams), therefore dont expect any deal to be done. In addition, I can see Jerry trading down because he loves acquiring picks only to cut those players in 2 years after everyone sees that they arent football-proficient.

BernseysOverInflatedEgo- DB has stated on numerous occasions that there is a difference between physical play or in game toughness and fighting. He said you can play physically without needing to fight. This is absolutely true. Nice use of other sports to help your argument. I believe fighting is not a part of the NBA or NFL and is not tolerated at all, which proves that it is not needed in hockey.

HEY EGO, you’re right, let’s not just keep fighting in hockey, let’s encourage it. The Hawks play the panthers next. I want to see Patrick Kane and/or Jonathan Toews to get into a fight. i want to see Toews get a 15 minuet misconduct penalty and get kicked out of the game. Then Havlet can get involved, and get a 5 minute instigation penalty(or whatever it is). And then the Predators can score on the hawks and take a lead with the Hawks best player out of the game. i want to see kane brake his hand punching somebody. Then they both can get suspended and Toews will miss a game, and Kane, with his broken hand he can miss the playoffs, the hawks then will not have home ice advantage becuase their best players were out, but hey, at least they will be able to look at themselves in the mirror and say,”it was all just part of the game, i am a real hockey player now!!!” Will that satisfy you, is that what you WANT to see? Personally, i don’t think players with a brain in their scull would put themselves in that position, and even real hockey fans wouldn’t want to see that happen, thus making it, NOT PART OF THE GAME!!! You want to see fighting and over machoed men bloodying eachother, watch Cage Fighting
