Trying Not to Get Ahead of Ourselves.

As the Sox have begun to play some pretty good baseball over the last week and half, we get the news that Gordon Beckham has been promoted from AA Birmingham to AAA Charlotte.  And while that promotion has been confirmed (Beckham will be in the lineup Thursday for the Knights), the question most people will be asking is, “when is he coming here?”

Not so fast.

Gordon Beckham has enjoyed a nice year in the White Sox minors (.299 AVG, .366 OBP, .497 SLG with the Barons), but I still believe the likelihood of him joining the big club within the next couple of months is slight.  If he does, it means one of a few of things, and none of them are good:  the Sox are not doing well overall, a bunch of guys are injured, or there are absolutely NO other options.  It would not be the best thing for Gordon Beckham to join the Sox before he is absolutely ready to be here…not a minute sooner.  It’s not the best thing for him, and in turn, not the best thing for the Sox.  His development into a true major leaguer, and the cautious path to that level, are in the best interests of both the team and the player.

Too many expectations, too much hope, too much invested in the Sox top pick from last year.  And, yes, it was only last year.

I, like the rest of curious Sox fans, am excited about the prospect of watching Beckham play at U.S. Cellular Field.  But the team needs to do everything right in his development.  Even if that means we have to wait a while.

So, in the meantime, let’s hope this current streak of winning continues.  If the pitching stays sharp and the defense keeps making the plays (the Sox have looked terrific in the field lately), they’ll be back above .500 in no time…regardless of the offensive issues.

Finally, congrats to the Blackhawks on a fun season and to Huet who played a beautiful Game 6, despite the loss.  Next year looks bright.

I have been listening with interest how great the white sox are these days when across town, the cubs are ridiculed by the sox fans when they mop up teams like the pirates 18 times a year. How about these sox? They came back home 5-1 on their road trip having wiped out 2 of the worst teams in baseball- the pirates and the k.c.royals and now get even 2 more worst teams to beat up upon- oakland and then cleveland. Sure, the sox may win their pitiful division but let’s see when they begin playing some real teams.

p.s.- No way are real pitchers like Peavy or Oswalt coming to the sox. Who wants to pitch in that launching pad where home run stats get all distorted. Peavy and Oswalt are not crazy + who wants to play for that psycho the Wizard.

Ranger, I’m not getting carried away over the White Sox sudden decision to promote Gordon Beckham from Triple “AAA” Charlotte, despite tearing the cover off the ball there and back at Double “AA” Birmingham when they initially broke camp in Glendale, AZ. To me, it was a panic move in the wake of Joshua Fields’ uneven play defensively at third base, the alarming strikeout total and the lack of power since smacking over 20 homers in the lost 2007 season, plus little to no production in extremely limited action for Wilson Betemit at the less than hot corner. I didn’t think it was necessary to call up Gordon as quickly as they did. Listening to your White Sox Radio Network broadcasts back in Spring Training, I remember Beckham was playing a lot of the time at second base, and I thought I heard Steve Stone mention Gordon in the same breath as the recently retired Jeff Kent in comparisons to the guy drafted #1 by the Sox only a year ago. Over the long haul, even though Chris Getz has been good for the most part in his first season at second base, I have this feeling that Beckham will be there within 5 years and not at third.

The White Sox are basically a small market niche team with bandwagon fans.
