Quentin opens up about injury
The news on Carlos Quentin? Well, not great.
Opening up in detail about his injury on Tuesday, yes, the left foot is suffering from Plantar Fasciitis, but he also admitted that he is one bad step away from rupturing the tendon in his foot even further. That would then cost him the season.
“We’re aware that if a relapse happens where the tendon ruptures even more, well that’s major,’’ Quentin said. “That’s something that’s going to take longer, maybe even the rest of the season. So we’re thinking that if that tendon goes, that’s a two to four-month recovery. Where we’re at in the baseball season, two-to-four really doesn’t work out as far as being able to play again this season. That’s more of the concern right now.
“That’s the direction we have taken, to make sure that it doesn’t relapse, doesn’t further tear. If there’s discomfort and nothing happens, that’s just fine. If there is no discomfort or pain that would be perfect, but we’re just seeing where it’s going to be and have doctors keep checking it out to make sure this is something that won’t happen again.’’
Either way, the 2008 MVP candidate did admit that he could be facing surgery on the foot right after the season, one way or the other.
“We’ve talked about it,’’ Quentin said. “It’s something I have to address when the season is over. It’s a possibility. Just to go in there and cut the tendon and then not ever have to deal with it again. We’ll see how it is when it gets there.’’
Manager Ozzie Guillen, meanwhile, continues his approach with Quentin, dealing with it as a worst-case scenario.
“I wish I could have a really positive news, but I can’t because … Carlos is making progress? Yes. No doubt about it. He got better every day? No doubt about it. But I cannot say he got better because I don’t see him running, doing baseball stuff. Just shagging in the outfield like normal.
“In my opinion, I’ve made my mind about him not in the lineup until the All-Star break. That’s what I got in my mind. Hopefully he gives me a nice surprise and I’m ready to go in one to two weeks. But right now, I cannot think about him because I don’t want to get hurt later.’’
Lost in all the Quentin injury talk is also the fact that the outfielder walked away from a contract extension in the spring.
While he doesn’t like to dwell in the past, Quentin did confess that he’s had second thoughts the last month.
“I mean security and contracts, it’s a real thing,’’ Quentin said. “It’s a real thing for all players and our everyday lives. You look back at it and think should you have done it then. It’s a weird thing. It’s hard to predict. All you can do is trust the people around you that make decisions, that analyze stuff.
“Ultimately it’s my decision at the end, but who’s to say that if I would have signed the contract and this would have happened, and then I feel even worse that I signed a contract and can’t show anything on the field for it. There are two different ways to look at it. I’m choosing to look at it as just moving forward and having all of that work itself out in the future.’’

Well, it’s good to see that the injury isn’t impeding his shagging.

“Mr. Reliable”…that should be Quentins new nickname. Now I know why Arizona gave up on this guy. Something tells me this injury thing is going to be a constant problem with him.

Speaking of which, this is from the Daily Herald on January 29th, after the Cubs signed outfielder Xavier Nady: “The Cubs insist Nady will be ready [...]

Joe, I heard you on with “Mully & Hanley” early this evening on my way home from work, and I’m not so sure that Carlos Quentin will be back at all the rest of the season with this foot injury. I know Hanley mentioned the lingering foot injury that Andres Nocioni, now with the Sacramento Kings, had that one season with the Bulls. This appears frighteningly familiar and that this foot injury won’t go away until CQ undergoes surgery which may be sooner rather than later.
