3rd Installment of Michael “Whats up Bill?” Piff’s Diary
Today is the 1st day of July and it looks like September outside. This is the best city in the world when its Summer time yet it feels like I should be out tailgating for a Bears game before fall. That reminds me, I can’t wait for Bears season. For a while there I was getting scared this Summer was going to suck with the way Cubs and Sox were playing a couple weeks ago. But then they met up on the Southside and the Sox found themselves, or they found Gordon Beckham (or Simba as Danny Mac likes to call him for his lion like mane). It’s amazing how the kid has gone from batting .197 to .267 in like a week’s span. Sure it was against the Cubs and Indians, but it still counts for something. Amazing how both those teams were picked to be division winners by the so called “experts” before the season started. I’m so glad to have the Sox winning. It’s way too tough to go from the playoff runs the Bulls and Blackhawks had to how this baseball season has fared for both sides of town. It’s like watching Caddyshack and then having to see its sequel immediately after, just a pathetic drop off in quality. Hopefully the golden child at 3rd can keep up his mean streak and be the savior that we all have been hyping him up to be.
The internship continues to be going strong. We just wrapped up our Score Search auditions for Chicago’s Next Sports Reporter. I think it’s funny how the David Shuster’s future colleague could be a guy/girl who earned his/her job being hammered at some bar we were auditioning at. No offense to everyone who auditioned. There were a bunch of great voices and personalities out there and some very creative minds. Working the Score Search Auditions was a blast though. Traveling to sports bars all over the Chicago area, talking sports with some very intelligent fans, and working alongside personalities like Jason Goff, Matt Abbatacola, and my guy Steve “Mongo” McMichael was exactly what I liked to be doing for work. Sure this job doesn’t pay monetarily, but it certainly pays off in amazing experiences. Funniest memory out of all the Score Search auditions was the event we had at Wireless Planet in Countryside with Mongo. Big guy comes up to Mongo and ask’s, “So is you some kinda radio talk guy or something?” Mongo explains to him how he played football for the Bears, was a pro wrestler, and now coachers the Chicago Slaughter. Guy checks out the ring on his hand and says, “yo whats that bling for? pretty big ring huh.” Mongo tells him it’s his Superbowl ring without wasting a second guy embarrassingly asks, “Bears won a Superbowl? No way!” That gentleman could and should have been tied up, gagged, blindfolded, dragged, thrown into a trunk and possibly dropped off in the middle of an abandoned corn field out in Iowa. His cell phone would be taken away and he would only be left with 50 cents for a pay phone. Hopefully pay phones only cost 50 cents still or else he would be S.0.L. for sure. I digress, but as I said before, the Score Search was a great idea and I hope the Score makes this contest an annual. Thing.
Today I was given the incredible opportunity to sit in on the Danny Mac Show and be their intern for the day. Let me just say, working for those two and producers Jay Zawaski was an absolute blast. I researched and printed out articles for Spiegel regarding Ben Gordon in free agency. I looked up articles giving a national perspective from ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Sporting News, and USA Today. Surprisingly the New York Times couldn’t give Ben any love. Apparently the Knicks aren’t too interested in him. I also pulled articles from the Sun Times, Tribune, and Daily Herald for a local perspective. Producing intern Andre showed me how to update the show to podcasts onto the website. Mac had me pick him up some hard boiled eggs and blue berries from down in the cafeteria, of course Andre got the on-air love for that one, and then I looked up all the Dos Equis Most Interesting Man in the World quotes for Matt to use and correlate with Albert Pujols. He may not be interesting but he is the baddest man the game for sure. Some of my favorite quotes from that campaign include:
“If there were an interesting gland, his would be larger than most men’s entire lower intestines.”
“When he orders a salad, he gets the dressing right there on top of the salad, where it belongs…where there is no turning back”
And..
“He once punched a magician. That’s right. You heard me.”
The experience was incredible and I look forward for working for those guys again soon. Tonight I plan to check Matt’s band out at Martyrs on the Northside. You all should be there.
And for our speaker today we had the Great Web God himself Steve Koscik talk to us about his journey in the radio business. Like myself he started out as an intern at B96. He climbed his way up the promotional ranks and, long story short, he is now the Webmaster at The Score 670. What I learned from him was that you can’t be complacent and to always look for new opportunities. In order to get where you want to be, work hard, show that you can do a good job, and take advantage any opportunities that open themselves up. It was a pretty great talk and gave me a great perspective on what I want to do in with this internship. The longer it goes, the more fun I am having and the more I learn from these valuable experiences.

Way to go Mike! Love the breakdown on the intern action. I particularly enjoy our excellent use of metaphors to describe your reactions. But I digress. Overall a great blog keep it up, and keep me updated
