Thursday: Real Time Sports
It’s a holiday-weekend-starting special for the Bud Light “Who Needs Two?” Tavern Tour this afternoon. Join us in Elk Grove Village at Real Time Sports (1120 W. Devon) for cold Bud Light, the chance to win Cubs tickets, and registration to win a copy of Punch Out for the Nintendo Wii.
We will do “Who You Crappin?” at 5:00, and have the Second Half, Terry’s Roar of the Day, a baseball report and surprises.
Ben Gordon ended up getting more money than he had been offered in previous negotiations, and the Bulls now must go cold-turkey in beating their addiction to his scoring. Though it appears counterintuitive to many observing a team’s leading scorer so easily discarded, the move makes sense economically and strategically if they follow through properly. First, cap flexibility can allow for a major in-season acquisition (and subsequent signing) of a 2010 free-agent-to-be, or a signing a year from now. Second, the stated re-commitment to defense must be more than mere lip-service and Derrick Rose’s development as a game-closer must now accelerate. The Bulls may, indeed, be closer to winning a championship, though they may not look like it this season.
Marian Hossa brings his considerable game to the west side, as the Hawks replace their top scorer with that of their rival. The time for Cristobal Huet arrives, too, with the departure of Nikolai Khabibulin. I am really surprised that the Hawks held the press conference yesterday, rather than grabbing a free second day of positive pub with a rollout today.
Give the Sox credit — not just for their winning streak, but for their clear-headedness. As Joe Cowley told us yesterday, Kenny Williams and Ozzie Guillen are still trying to decide how good the team is before responding to contenders’ calls. It is a precarious position for an organization at a roster crossroads.
Time for the Cubs to vault over the Brewers, if they can. Aramis Ramirez again cooled expectations for his impact yesterday, saying “It’s going to be hard the rest of the year because I’m not even close to being where I want to be. It’s still sore and it’s going to be like that.” Great.
And our discovery and discussion of Paul Edinger’s Costa Rican kicking camp was picked up by Deadspin.com. Some of the comments that follow their story are really funny.

meant to say between now and Monday above, Sorry

It’s good to see the old man looking like Jose Contreras ‘05 light (about 65% of what he used to be).
And Cleveland are definitely no slouches in the hitting department (if you don’t believe me just go to mlb.com and go through the sortable hitting stats……they are in the top 10-15 in all mlb hitting stats).
I have a man-crush on Bacon.

Rooftop, stop re-reading your posts and making corrections.
Think of yer college days…….outline, rough draft, finished treatise.

29 days until training camp.
Dan i agree completely with you on Derrick Rose’s excelleration into closer for the bulls. I sure hope Lou Deng’s health improves. if it has your lineup will and should be Rose, Salmons, Deng, Thomas and Noah. If Deng is either unhealthy or a shadow of his former self, then it should be Rose, Hinrich, Salmons, Thomas and Noah. Actually, Defensively might be better off that way anyways. Bring Deng off the bench.
Bob Loblaw
IF Ramirez returns this year he will be playing w/upper body pain (at least that’s what he has said). But I can see a lower body and/or leg injury not long after returning. $10 says that he is not in shape.
General Soreness
I enjoyed flipping through your Hot Magazine Covers…….but did you have to include Drew Barrymore, Janet Jackson and, ugh, Valerie Bertinelli? May as well put Oprah and Rosie O’Donnell up there.
Iron Chef – Junk Food
Don’t worry Bum, all your troubles are going to go away:
‘The Chicago Cubs acquired infielder Jeff Baker from the Colorado Rockies for minor-league pitcher Alberto Alburquerque on Thursday.
Baker will join the Cubs in time for Thursday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field. The Cubs will have to make a corresponding move to their roster.
Baker, who has been mostly a backup, had his best season with the Rockies in 2008, hitting 12 home runs and driving in 48 runs. He’s hitting .130 with three RBIs this season, and he’ll back up first base and third base.
Alburquerque is a right-handed pitcher who was with Single-A Daytona.’

Chef,
Yep I heard about the big trade and could hardly contain myself. I’m still not sure exactly what the difference between this guy and Freel is. Both can play anywhere pretty much. Maybe this was done cause he can play third better since all we hear about is how much rest Aramis is going to need once he’s back.
With all that being said, I expect the Cubs to win at least 3 of 4 this series. It would be a good start to what is now the most important stretch of the year. Even if they sweep it won’t change my long term outlook for the team, but this is a series that is very winnable. Besides being at home, they don’t have to face Gallardo in the series at all, and get to face two Brewer starters that have started 2 games each so far this year. Even though they sit in first place right now, I still don’t think the Brewers are really that good and I still believe that the Cardinals will end up winning this division.
Spell Checker
Where is this AM100? My dial starts at about 520 and goes up from there?
Beverly Brewmaster
Spell Checker, you need to get one of those Fire and the Passion™ radio receivers. AM100 will come in loud and clear…

“spoon chested white guys”? Much like the two hosts of this show.
Bernstein should get a negroplasty like Kyle Broflowski did….
No Class
What the heck is Joe Dumars thinking? There won’t be enough basketballs for a Pistons team that has Iverson, Gordon, & Villanueva on it. I wonder how Ben will feel playing with somebody (Iverson) who’s a bigger ballhog than he is. The Cavs, Magic, & Celtics have nothing to fear from that bunch.
SPAULDING!
A brief tale of two teams:
one is at a fork in the roads.
one has taken Uncle Moneybag’s Ferrari down a gravel road.
Both teams need to avoid becoming the Oakland Raiders–I mean the New York Mets.
The Sox follow the Cardinals/ Braves model and the Cubs follow the Mets model. But, that flashy free agent model might seem tempting to Mr. Williams (wardrobe provided by Botany 500)
So, what’s my point? Oh yeah FULD!

NO CLASS, IVERSON I BELIEVE IS A FREE AGENT
Matt Abbatacola’s Blue Tooth(formely known as Sore Throat)
it looks like the white sox are on a role, but they beat up on the cubs who recently beat up on the indians who just got swept by the white sox, so how good are they? 3 out of 4 from the royals will go some ways towards telling that, but really, they aren’t that good either. so what i am saying? until someone beats someone of substance, we are still in the midst of bad baseball, which provides my evenings of many a yawn

The N.L. Central:
Your awful division:
2003 Marlins (should have been the Cubs) World Champs
2004 Cardinals (could have been the Cubs)
2005 Astros (oh, never mind) best four game series (could those games have been any closer?)
2006 Cardinals World Champs
2007 Rockies (could have been the Cubs) –entirely unwatchable series
2008 Phillies (should have been the (oh, brother! . . .I love scotch.) World Champs
By the way, what tense is could have been? Imperfect? conditional? plus que parfait? Did I dangle my participle? (Can I say that?) Grammar Police: ASSEMBLE!

This blog needs a miscelaniois section.
Turned on the Score late last night to hear a bunch of nonesense about “how much have you eaten in one sitting”. Jeez…some sports talk.
Not against getting away from local Cubs-Sox chatter. but when things turn to sophmoric talk about food intake..well you lose me.
And whats up with giving us a rebroadcast of a White sox game?
This station is taking too much for granted with its listeners.

Friday Hamp and Holmes
Good Morning:
It’s been a bad couple of weeks for Derrick Rose. We have to talk about it.
Who else knew that Curtis Granderson was going to tie the game last night? But the Sox use fundamentals to come through and win.
Another Geoff Blum 1-run loss for the Cubs. Now the Cubs and Sox need each other [...]

Peppers One-and-Done?
by Dan Bernstein
One of the Bears’ savviest-ever moves was the hiring of former agent Cliff Stein in 2002. Three years ago, he was put in charge of all player-contract negotiations as Senior Director of Football Administration and General Counsel. Since then, the team has balanced nicely their major expenditures and cap flexibility, maintaining the liklihood [...]

I’m very confused/skeptical about the news that Aramis Ramirez is starting his rehab assignment tomorrow. As Dan said all we ever hear is how sore it is and that he is going to need extra rest. I remember on Sunday he was telling a reporter that it was so sore during BP that he “didn’t know exactly when he would be going out on assignment, but would accompany the team to Pittsburgh.” Not ever 48 hours later on Tuesday night, the Cubs say he is starting one Friday. Besides that originally Lou and everyone had said he would get about 25 at bats in the minors which would be around a week’s worth of games. Now Ramirez will only play three games, which will be about 9-10 at bats, and says the team plans him to return Monday against Atlanta.
First off to be fair to the Cubs, I obviously do not know all the details of what is going to happen between now and Friday, nor am I anything close to a dr. My gut tells me though that I don’t like where this is going one bit. I understand that the Cubs are obviously a very desperate team and realize a bad stretch here before the All-Star break could all but end their season. But I can’t help but wonder, Are they pushing him back too soon like many people said they did with Derrick Lee? Certainly seems like it. Are they counting on him to be the savior that turns the season around? Most definitely they are… Is that the right way for the Cubs to think or very fair to Aramis Ramirez? In my opinion, absolutely not, but have the Cubs as an organization done anything right since about October 1st of last year? No.. so why should this be any different ? If there is one thing we have learned about the Cubs the past few years, it’s that they are very secretive and often wrong when it comes to evaluating their players injuries, rehabs, etc.
