Cutler Wins In Denver…So What…So Let’s Dance.

As far as I’m concerned, the pre-season ended when the 1st unit Defense left the game early in the 3rd quarter.  Other than injury, what happens against Cleveland on Thursday is not important.  Here’s what I thought about what happened in Denver…

I actually thought the hostile atmosphere was a positive for the Bears.  It allowed for them to work on how communication will work when they’re on the road.  There were no early procedural penalties, so Broncos fans can wear their diapers, burn their jerseys and cry all they want, but they actually helped Jay Cutler on Sunday night.

The range of throws that Cutler can make is pretty amazing.  He seems to have every throw in every angle in his bag.  The Bears often run a 4-minute drill in practice.  They put the offense inside their own 20, with 1 timeout and see if they can put together a drive.  In a game situation on Sunday, the Bears used what they learned and marched 98 yards to end the half.  Lovie Smith made the right call removing Cutler after the half.

The first player that jumped off the screen in a bad way was Trumaine McBride.  He missed tackles, he made penalties and got beat on pass plays. Not good for a guy trying to hold on.

I thought I would see more from the WR, but Cutler really used the TE. Earl Bennett looked decent.  I was expecting more from Devin Aromashadu and Brandon Rideau. They were ok, but not outstanding.  It’s so clear that Cutler and Olsen have a connection. Olsen, Clark and Forte accounted for 9 of Cutler’s 15 completions.  I expect that we’ll see the bulk of completions during regular season games be about the same ratio.

Defensively, I thought Tommie Harris looked pretty good. I was a tad miffed at the fact that he told Chris Collinsworth that his knee is only about 80%. Sometimes I think that athletes don’t understand that the local reporters hear the national broadcast. He can’t now tell us he’s 100% when Collinsworth is telling the world that he’s not. I thought Anthony Adams looked pretty good alongside Tommie and Marcus Harrison got some pressure from the DT spot. I think they’re going to be ok at that spot, whoever starts…my pick is still Adams.

The defense got gashed to start the 3rd quarter with a backup QB manning the helm. Lovie Smith wasn’t happy with it.  In a 3rd pre-season game, halftime adjustments are part of the equation and that shows Josh McDaniels figured something out and Lovie didn’t counter.

Will the Bears pay attention to Adrian Peterson’s production or are they fixated on keeping Garrett Wolfe because he’s a draft pick?

I didn’t notice Al Afalava and that‘s not good.  As a matter of fact, Afalava wasn’t credited with a tackle (ouch) Kevin Payne lead the team with 5 tackles. He’s been much better this preseason.  I like him at the FS spot better than SS.

Devin Hester showed you why he is the most maddening and the most explosive Returner in the NFL.  He fair caught a punt headed for the end zone inside the 5. That’s ridiculous.  Then he redeems himself with a great return (54 yards) that he almost took to the house.  Also ridiculous.

How will injuries shape the roster?  Will Charles Tillman, Zach Bowman and Danieal Manning be back in time for the opener?  It’s a short week leading to the pre-season finale against Cleveland, which will be all about the ‘bubble guys’.

Cutler looked great tonight. I’m starting to get excited for the regular season with him. I’m a bit more concerned though with the man protecting his blind side, Orlando Pace. He had a hard time with Dumervil tonight. Should that be a concern going into the regular season?

Pretty much agree with it all. Good work as usual, Lawrence.

Wanted to see 2 things today:

1. Deep passes…..can anyone catch em? 1 to Knox worked out alright, but the one to Aromashadu was broken up on a great play from the db. They can throw em, just can they catch em?

2. More than 1 big run from Forte….he didn’t have one against a bad defense in Denver. That’s a little worrisome but not enough to make me believe Forte will be any different from last year.

Overall good game, Cutler’s for real, Bears still have NO #1 WR….Olsen had a nice game, and Hester needs to stop thinking so much on returns….grab the ball when you need to and run run run!!!

The Broncos are gonna be a bad team, but the opponent the Bears played against today was the crowd…..and they won that battle and can only help them 14 days from now!!

Laurence, the question isn’t Adrian Peterson or Garrett Wolfe. Rather, it’s Adrian Peterson or Kevin Jones. You want your backup RB’s to contribute on special teams. Peterson and Wolfe do, Jones doesn’t. So Jones had better be a better runner… and he’s not.

Agreed on McBride. Royal was running circles around him.

Honestly, what impressed me the most was when Pisa ran down Royal from behind. He made a couple of really nice plays tonight.

I can’t agree that Harris looked good. Go rewatch the game, when he was playing against Kuper he was being pushed back. He is slower than I have ever seen him, and everytime I saw him run it was with a limp. Once Olsen replaced him Harris looked better, but that was against a rookie 4th round pick and he was still one on one with Harris, who only got penetration a couple of times against him but never really sniffed the QB. Both Harrison and Adams where more effective than Tommie and thats a shame. The front 4 of the Bears did not get it done in this game IMO, the Bears were using that mug up look again and that is not really a good thing.

I also didn’t think much of Payne in this game, he Steltz and McBride let recievers get behind them to often. I am surprised you did not mention the poor tackling of the Bears, this team could shave 70 yards off a game if they stop with the high tackling and the arm tackling, and for the love of god stop trying the flying tackle.

The only other thing I can think of is that Williams and Pace both had problems with Reid and Dumervil most of the first half. Dumervil is a cheap shot punk.

Anyway keep up the great work Holmes.

Did you see the NBC slow-mo focus on Tommie early in the game? He could barely hobble, let alone run. They should sit this guy all season if that’s what it takes to get his knee healthy. He is not effective AND will never be healthy if they continue this approach. I thought A Peterson looked great, why the obsession with Wolfe? I would have liked to see some real pressure on Orton. Broncos blitzed and disrupted Cutler early. Bears did nothing. A few pressures, but nothing really disruptive. Cutler is going to have to score 48 a game with this defense.

how can rideau and aromashadu get an opportunity to show case what they can or cant do if plays arent call for them? so now we see a weakness of orlando pace! dumervil showcased that! but no one hasnt speaked on that! hester is the most electricfying returner ever! he is not a no.1 receiver and that is obvious. rideau again will not make the team and if i was him i would move on to another team!

If Tommy Harris is only at 80% why is Lovie Playing Him? Tommy is destine to get hurt by week 4.

Defense will be the fans biggest concern this year. The Bears have been thin @ corner and FS for years but they’ve failed to address them. I give Angelo creadit for getting Cutler but he must draft better. Drafting players with existing medical issues and reaching for the Dan Bazuins of the world only hinders this teams progress. and should stop from here on out. I say give Rideau and the other tall kid a chance with Cutler and we’ll see some production. While I like Davis and Wolfe they should cut these guys and give them a chance to sign with other teams that will be able to utilize their skills a bit better.

The coaching staff is on notice and they need to do a better job of maximizing the talent that they have on this team. Ron Turner must use his imagination and get players in position to make plays. Really, Rideaux should be in the 2 WR spot, and Hester should play the slot.

All that being said 10-6 this year barring injury.

I was at the game last night. As soon as Cutler took the field the stomping and booing was so loud my seat was actually shaking. It was actually a little bit scarey at first to be sitting there in my Payton jersey, but there were Denver Police Officers everywhere. The display by the Bronco fans was totally classless and really… nauseating. I am a middle aged woman and I have a disability so I was sitting in that section. After the Bears began scoring the Bronco fans behind me took beer and dumped it down under my seat so that it got all over my shoulder bag… pretty low class… and these guys had to be in their 40’s. I’m embarrassed to live in a community where fans would act as horribly as the Bronco fans acted to someone who did so much for their team.

There were, however, many (maybe 4-5 thousand) Bears fans there… more than I expected. Most wore Urlacher jerseys, but there were many Hester, “new” Cutler, and some other Payton and even Sayers jerseys. ALL of the Bears fans that I saw were very well behaved.
Once the Bears started scoring the Bronco fans got a bit quieter, but were still terrible to Jay Cutler whenever he was on the field. He did a great job under the most hostile circumstances I have ever witnessed at a sporting event in my life. GOOD FOR YOU, JAY!!! God Bless You and Go Bears!

Peppers One-and-Done?

One of the Bears’ savviest-ever moves was the hiring of former agent Cliff Stein in 2002.  Three years ago, he was put in charge of all player-contract negotiations as Senior Director of Football Administration and General Counsel.  Since then, the team has balanced nicely their major expenditures and cap flexibility, maintaining the liklihood [...]
