A Real Bears Week
What better reason for a day off from school than the celebration of slavery being introduced to the Americas! Mass subjugation and slaughter of indigenous populations in the name of European colonization! Party! (”Cubbies! Wooo! [pours beer on head. passes out]“).
Regardless, Terry and I are working today. So join us in discussing the weekend in sports and getting ready for an actual Bears game.
A game, I think, that appears to bode ill for the locals. I’m not optimistic about the Bears’ current approach to rushing the passer — blitz a lot of people, a lot of the time, and hope the zone shell prevents a big play and/or produces a turnover — being effective against Matt Ryan and his assorted weapons. Jay Cutler will need to make big plays down the field, and that means risk of sacks and picks, what with the blocking he has.
Contrast that with, say, Kyle Orton, who is being used nicely in Denver. They build a wall in front of him, clear the passing lanes, and he makes short, sharp throws on digs, crosses and screens. Conservative works, ironically, for a proud, Tom Harkin-style, Iowa liberal. Even if he and his teammates looked like chocolate-dipped bananas.
MLB playoff roll-call: Cards? Out. Bosox? Out. Piranhas? Out. Yanks/Angels in one LCS and Dodgers/Phi-or-Col in the other. Soon, it will be time to improperly formulate baseball conclusions that result in unnecessary emulation of some of these teams, even though their success or failure after reaching the playoffs is almost totally random.
Second Half at 3:30 today, a Bears report, and possible surprises.
Rumor is that Friday Fung may be back this week. Stay tuned…
UPDATE: I just found this, and had to share. Enjoy: http://deadspin.com/5379100/the-fake-chip-caray-twitter-is-up-and-it-is-gold

Important question… As a DirecTV subscriber, am I getting the shaft with respect to tonight’s Blackhawks game because it’s on Versus? Comcast can point fingers at DirecTV and DirecTV can point fingers at Comcast, but as far as I’m concerned the real bad guy here is the NHL (yeah, I’m looking at you, Gary Bettman) for selling their tv rights to a fourth-tier hillbilly channel.
GambitRF
Don’t they usually show the games on Versus on Comcast as well?

This trend of seemingly trying to find the most obscure, awful looking throwback uniforms has to stop. Those striped pants the Broncos had on were absolutely hideous.

About the only good thing about my work being so slow yesterday due to the Bear’s bye week was that I got to watch almost all the other games this week with the Directv package we have there. So i’ll offer up a few observations…
1: This next 7 weeks will be by far the toughest part of the Bear’s schedule this year. I think it is very likely they go 2-5 or even 1-6 this next stretch.
2: The Lions are either much better then last year or the Steelers are much worse or both.
3: The Patriots and Cowboys may be the two most overrated teams in football.
4:Despite the Bear’s being 3-1, I’m not sure they are going to make the playoffs or even one of the six best teams in the NFC. Right now I’ve got the Vikings, Giants, Saints, Falcons, and Eagles ahead of them, and I still think there is a good chance the Packers finish ahead of them. Supposedly all three of their missing starters on the offensive line will be back next week. They are 2-2, but they lost to one team that is 5-0 and another team that should be 5-0 if it wasn’t for a fluke/miracle play by Denver in week 1.

Beverly,
I believe Comcast is not carrying the Hawk’s game tonight. It’s exclusively on Versus. I know at my work we have Directv and we can’t find it anywhere in the listings, not even on the NHL Center Ice package. Although it may be blacked out on that anyway even if it was being carried.

Silly me, Broncos- I believed that the whole point of throwback uniforms was to generate replica sales… but who the hell is buying one of THOSE?
All kidding aside, the Broncos need to lose, and lose quickly, if only to stop the incessant crowing from two factions:
1) The pro-Orkman Bear meatball
2) The idiot Denver fans that ran Jake Plummer out of town after seasons of 10-6, 10-6, 13-3 and 7-4, benching him at that point of the season.
Anything to keep dumb people from talking more than is absolutely necessary is a plus.

I should clarify when I said Comcast above. I meant Comcast sportsnet, not comcast cable. It of course will be on versus if you have cable.

Josh McDaniels is quite a gracious winner isn’t he? With all the fist pumping and screaming, he will have a short NFL head coaching shelf life along with that other “passion/fire” coach, Mike (Piece of the True Cross) Singletary.
JohnFromCedarTucky
What happened to Tom Brady yesterday? Brady was throwing a lot more like Rex Grossman then Tom Brady? The Denver Broncos got lucky again yesterday. This could be the Broncos fluke year like the when the Bears won 13 games in the regular season under **** Jauron only to get crushed by the Eagles in the playoffs.
JohnFromCedarTucky
Will Josh McDaniels be a gracious loser when Denver loses?
JohnFromCedarTucky
Why did the Score’s Blog delete Coach Jauron’s first name?

When will Dan & Terry do another Ask us Anything?

Looking at the “Worst Bears QB survey”, I’m not surprised that Cade is leading the voting, but Quinn at #2? Where’s all the Quinn hate coming from? He came in with no expectations and nobody expected anything at all- in a perfect world, he shouldn’t have ever played.
K. Orton
Orton had a nice start to the season, having led Purdue to a 5-0 start with 18 touchdowns and no interceptions. Orton was a Heisman Trophy hopeful, until a late 4th quarter Orton fumble was run back for a touchdown to give undefeated 12th ranked Wisconsin the winning score in West Lafayette and gave 5th ranked Purdue its first of several losses that season. Later that season, he received multiple injuries in consecutive games against Michigan and Northwestern that forced him out of his starting position for a month.

I don’t know about you, guys, but there were some real yawners on this “Bear-less” Sunday of NFL football. Vikings/Rams? Steelers/Lions? Yeah, I realize that the Vikings & Rams are two teams the Bears will face later this year, as well as Detroit, but come on! If station bosses at both CBS2 & FOX32 had any brains, Chicago viewers should’ve seen Bengals/Ravens instead of Steelers/Lions, and Falcons/49ers instead of Vikings/Rams. While Patriots/Broncos was exciting, what’s the deal with those Denver throwback uniforms? I understand it’s the AFL’s 50th Anniversary season, but those 1960 duds were ****-worthy! Those were the most hideous unis I’ve seen since the 1994 Bears in that “Monday Night Football” game vs. the Packers in a driving rainstorm and as ugly as the tie-dye road unis the NBA’s New Jersey Nets wore some 15-20 years ago!

What is the deal with the giant ‘SYLVANIA’ sign on the glass behind the goal at the UC? I was watching the Blackhawks game Saturday and kept seeing those big a$$ orange letters and wondering if it was some CGI trickery. That looks like complete ^%$@.

800 thats almost as bad a the “Hugo Chavez powerplay” which is painful to hear.. Good to hear the chipster has morphed into Square hole in a round peg Joe Carter.. Wonder how Pete Rozell these days?

?, the numbers this year may say Orton is doing better than Cutler, but calling Cutler fans’ meatballs?

Boers and Bernsy lose AGAIN to WMVP in the ratings.. will they ever beat the Afternoon Saloon…
NEVER….. \
Ed Sherman Blog…… WMVP, still holds the edge in midday and afternoon drive. “The Afternoon Saloon” of Carmen DeFalco, John Jurkovic and Harry Teinowitz did a 4.7 rating from 2-6 p.m,, compared with 4.3 from Terry Boers and Dan Bernstein on WSCR
not a dumb fan….
Why are we still talking about Kyle Orton? They scored 20 pts, this week in Denver, and 17 last week……it isn’t like he is scoring any more than he was here in Chicago. Why is he the topic of conversation? Denver could be one of these nice story 11-5 type teams who get beat in the first or 2nd round of the playoffs. The Bears won with Orton, the Bears won with Grossman, it can be done. We are acting like it is an impossibility to win with mediocre QB’s, that’s all the bears have had over the years so what are we talking about? Jim Miller and Shane Mathews went 13-3 with the Bears before, it can happen with good defense, good O-line play, and good running game.
Denver’s story isn’t about Kyle Orton, he is doing what he usually does, and he is a solid NFL QB…….(stop thinking he is bad because he is not), it is about their defense……. which has been horrible the last few years, into one of the top units in football. If Denver’s defense was as bad as it has been the last few years than Denver wouldve been who we thought they were, a 4 or 5 win team. Instead their defense is a top 10 unit in football, add a great O-line, an efficient type Qb they could easily win 10-12 games with that formula. That type of formula has been done multiple times throughout the league….we should know the most about that. The Bears went 10-5 with Orton as the QB in 2005 while he had a Qb rating of 57!!!!
relentless
trojanwearer , that really points out just how bad Boers and Bernstein are .Most people can’t stand listening to three people talking over each other.

Is there a worse franchise right now than the Oakland Raiders.
The once proud team is ruled by an owner that can’t admit he needs a GM and his first round pick at QB isn’t working.
The coaching staff is a mess. Attendance has been amoung the worst in the league.
The head coach assaults another coach and breaks his jaw.
Embarrissing for Raider fans and the NFL.

Al Davis has been goofy forever the few seasons when he had winning teams sports people would say thats just Al Davis being Al Davis sound familer

By the way where’s Pud Arkush defending **** Jauron? Wasn’t he (pud) saying that Jauron was an excelent coach? Jajajaja stupid ****.

Jemarcus Russel = Rohan Davey
May end up being true as regards their NFL carreers.
However, Russell was a first round number one pick. Therefore more is expected.
Davey was picked 117th by the Patriots and ended up in the Arena League.
Isn’t there a new pro league?
Russel may be headed there.
Both good college players though.

Jemarcus Russel = 6′6″ 260lbs.
Rohan Davey = 6′2″ 240lbs.
Both…. BAD

Terry just can’t take it when he is wrong he’s trying to make it sound like 50/50 is a mandate towards his opinion he’s becoming a goof.

I notice nobody has mentioned Brandon Marshall, who has taken two under thrown passes away from defenders and scored a game winning and game tieing Touchdown with them. Denvers defense has been great thanks to Nolan but that offensive line is awsome: Clady is the best young LT in football, Harris is a stud, Kuper and Hamilton have been great and former Bear Wiegmann has been solid. Denver is actually 21st in points scored and scoring fewer points then they did last year. Thank you McNugget for actually making that loaded offenses that was handed to you worse. The two games in which they scored the most points, the Raiders and Browns 23 points and 27 points are very close to their season averages, in fact the Raiders give up 26 points a game. The fact is Nolan has once again turned around another defense, and the offensive line has given up 8 sacks and gives its QB a lot of time to read and react. The best thing denver did this offseason is hire Mike Nolan, who McNugget has given little to no credit too, because its all about him and Orton.
Last thought on Denver, 5 fist pumps? Really????

Friday Fung may be back? Now I’m really looking forward to Friday (Yeah. I know it’s just a rumor).

as i have said before in regards to the trade, winners: bears, broncos, orton
looser: jay cutler
i say that, not because i hate jay cutler because i don’t and not because i wish him ill will because i don’t and as i mentioned, the bears won because they have him and he won some games for us that i don’t believe with this receiving corps, orton wins, and he makes the bears better, but is cutler better for being on the bears? NO WAY!!! bad line, mediocre receivers, meatballs everywhere to deal with, extended press to deal with, enlarged expectations. HE WAS footlish for asking for that trade, everybody else got better but him. but i will take it!!!

Good Morning:
It’s been a bad couple of weeks for Derrick Rose. We have to talk about it.
Who else knew that Curtis Granderson was going to tie the game last night? But the Sox use fundamentals to come through and win.
Another Geoff Blum 1-run loss for the Cubs. Now the Cubs and Sox need each other [...]

After missing a week due to Sox baseball, our signature segment returns at 5:00 this afternoon. Make sure to join us for the (usually) weekly comeuppance for hypocrisy and lies.
Speaking of which, this is from the Daily Herald on January 29th, after the Cubs signed outfielder Xavier Nady: “The Cubs insist Nady will be ready [...]

How about that 60 Minutes feature last night on Head Injuries? Really well done and I appreciated them focusing on Tebow and Ted Johnson, but then broadening it to youth football.
