Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked
The sting of Sunday’s loss to the Falcons still lingers for fans of this team, but the Bears can’t allow it to linger at Halas Hall.
Smiles all around today because the ink on Jay Cutler’s contract isn’t even dry yet. The Bears have secured that position and in my opinion have secured the future of their Offense. The present state of the Bears Offense is still up for debate…
I’ve always been amazed at how Football players compartmentalize. It’s a known NFL adage that you can’t lose the same game twice. So the Bears can’t allow the disappointment of their failings against Atlanta to spill over into game prep for Cincinatti.
That being said, there are issues from the game Sunday that need to be corrected: Run Blocking, Red-Zone Turnovers and timely penalties. I talked or texted with a few players over the last couple of days and they told me that the approach that the Bears take on Mondays after a loss is pretty simple. The coaches use positive and negative reinforcement to get their points across. Mistakes are shown in film session. They’re examined, explained and then discarded. The last game goes into the rearview mirror and the next game becomes the focus.
It’s a very adult way to go about things. The Bears coaches can’t react the way that we do. They can’t spend the whole week sulking because there’s work to do. If you pound the guys too hard about what went bad, you run the risk of the players thinking too much when they’re on the field. That leads to slower reaction time and could compound existing problems.
Still, can problems be fixed when your practices are solely focused on game-planning the next opponent? Guys need a couple of days to heal up first of all. The players get a NFL/NFLPA (Players Association) mandated day off on Tuesday. By the time they walk back in the door, on Wednesday, the prep is all about the Bengals and how to attack them. It’s hard to drill and work through mistakes when the valuable reps need to be used on Ced-Ben and the boys.
So I guess on Sunday, we’ll find out how good the Bears coaches are at teaching and time management. Don’t let the Falcons beat ya twice.

I wonder if Jerry Angelo is forcing Lovie to start Frank Omiliyale? Frank Omiliyale should be benched and the Bears should start Josh Beekman.

Laurence ,they may be thinking too much already and that may be a root cause of some of these problems.

If I was a coach I would completely abandon the run game. Basically I would sprinkle in a few draws, screens, but mainly scrap the Power O. The only chance the Bears have to stay in the playoff race is to sling the ball 70 percent of the time. Am I saying abandon the run game the whole season? No. Look at what the Cardinals did last year. Their passing game got them in the show and the running game clicked at the right time.

Laurence Please correct me if I’m wrong but the best use of film, is looking at film on the team you are about to face . It has always been my belief that you look to the future by looking at your opponents past, you look at his technique not just to offset his technique but to flat out beat it.

looking at these numbers that were posted on another blog I am going to go with the bears 23-20 in OT

Abandon the run?
Cutler needs receivers and depth perception first, a gunslinger he is not!
All one needs to do is go back and look at cutlers, sacks, interceptions in the red zone, knock downs, in the past three years.
Geez and this was the hope for the bears this year?
I am sick of hearing cutler is doing everything, like a good sandwich blame is like mayo or mustard spread it all over the bread!

Lawrence, players cannot comparmentalize the issues with the team. That’s what us fans do. However, when there are issues that happen continuously, I don’t think it woudl be a bad idea to review tape from all games to correct glaring issues (like rubn blocking for example). It may be a simpler fix than we believe, as it may be just one player missing their blocking assignment (hey Frank). So, I agree you cannot dwell on the penalties, red zon turnovers and sloppy plays from Sunday, but they need to address the O-line, and if tape can show the weaknesses, they need to review all of it and correct the issue.
