Bears Lose In Incredible Fashion
Well, Cedric Benson got his revenge and it was spectacular! Ced ran for 189 and a touchdown as the Bengals routed the Bears 45-10. That last part is the most important part of the story. “The Benson Bowl” made for an interesting storyline going into the game, but it’s not what Bears fans should be worried about. Bears fans should be worried about everything else because everything else was a DISASTER!
On the first 7 drives, that the Bengals had, they scored. For the 2nd game in a row, the Bears couldn’t generate a pass rush. For the 2nd game in a row, the Quarterback didn’t get touched. This time, it was veteran Carson Palmer, who torched the Bears for 5 touchdowns. Talk about embarrassing…Palmer was so good, that he didn’t even play the 4th quarter.
Because there was no pressure, the Bengals WR were able to workover the Bears DB. Zach Bowman and Charles Tillman looked lost on double moves. It’s like they were working for Chad Ochocinco, rather than trying to stop him.
I guess we can stop with the “Rod Marinelli is the end-all-be-all” campaign because his ”Rushmen” were as M.I.A. as they were last year against: Carolina, Atlanta and Tampa. If your Front-4 doesn’t get pressure, your Defense doesn’t work. If your Defense doesn’t work, you can’t possibly hope to win.
That doesn’t leave the Offense off the hook…
Jay Cutler was reckless. The $30 Million Dollar man, spent a lot of time throwing off his back foot. The passes looked like balloons. He’s got to learn that while he can make a ton of plays, he can’t make every play. His decision making needs to be questioned. He also under threw some balls that may have made it more of a game.
Cutler was put in jeopardy because the Bears Offensive Line can’t protect him. It starts with the snap. A listener pointed out to me 3 weeks ago that Olin Kreutz’s shotgun snaps were low. And he was right. Kreutz’s snap were below Cutler’s hip. If a QB has to take his eye off the coverage, it puts him and the Offense at a disadvantage. Kreutz took the blame after the game and he deserves that blame, but Cutler needs to catch the ball. The snaps were bad, but they weren’t awful.
Beyond the snaps, Cutler was running for his life. Cincinatti pressured Cutler and kept the ever-exposed Offensive Line in the spotlight. The excuse of “jelling” is getting old. They’re 6 games in and both the run game and pass protection are still less than suspect. A pressured Cutler, is a flustered Cutler, but throw the ball out of bounds. Live to fight another play.
The worst offender on Sunday, was the coaching staff. Lovie Smith had his team so under-prepared for this game that he should be worried about his future as Bears Head Coach. The Bears spent 60 minutes on the field and really didn’t get ANYTHING accomplished. This after knowing that there was ground to be gained on the Vikings. That’s fine if you’re the Raiders or the Lions, but not for the Bears. Marvin Lewis exploited all of the Bears weaknesses. Lovie Smith would rather try to deflect attention away from the problems instead of fixing them. Run Defense, Pass Defense, Run Offense and Pass Offense all failed and failed miserably. Talent is an issue, but the Bears aren’t 5 touchdowns worse than the Bengals. Questions about Lovie Smith’s job are fair and warranted. He’s really lucky that the Cleveland Browns are on the schedule for Sunday.

Spot on observations Laurence. Can we please stop with the Rod is God BS now?

That was a joke, watching Ced Ben rip us apart like that makes me physically ill. Bottom line is, we did not do anything well. The only potential shining light, a good game for Devin Hester, is lost because he can’t hold on to the football.
If I were Lovie I would be scared to death, with names like Shanahan, Billick, Cowher, and maybe Jeff Fisher looking for opportunities in the offseason. Unless they make some spectacular come back, I think the Bears organization would be foolish not go get themselves a sure fire hall of fame coach to try to put this thing back together. But then again… do I really expect them to do the right thing?
Adam
This team brings out the Chicago meathead in me. Lovie has to stop saying we just need to play better and execute. He needs to coach better and coach up something different. everything he is doing , he needs to do the opposite.
Erick
I am not a fire the coaching staff guy… but Lovie has got to go. After the Superbowl, Lov ie gave us “trust me…” He spoke then (as he still does) as if Jerry and he are on equal ground. Maybe Jerry’s role is to get the players Lovie wants. I can not think of a single player that has improved under Lovie. Most players have in fact gotten worse. I am not pining for players that have left, but the fact that Cutler is starting to look like Rex is disturbing. The fact that the defense can’t stop the run or the pass is disturbing. “Trust me…” Tommy Harris is a problem, maybe part of his problem is Lovie Smith. Nate Vasher, the safety dejour… are a problem. The management has stepped up and made agressive acquisitions, signed players to big money deals, only to have the coaching staff mess this up. Trust me Lovie, your time is up.
Mystrgreen
I also noticed that the players on the sidelines have no Fire !! No Passion !! I saw allot of blank stares on their faces and no one one was gettign in anyone’s face like I see other teams do. I see no leadership !!
david
lovie never challengers his favorite guys who feel way too comfortable with their spot on the team. lovie falls in love with athletic skill guys who have no football instincts.
turner, angelo, and lovie do not understand how to build a team around a quality quarter back, look at their track records
cutler needs to realize that if he is going to live by the sword, then he will also die by it.
and dying by the sword is more likely when you have garbage all around you and your throwing the ball 40+ times a game.
bears shouldn’t even be 3-3.
david
lovie is arrogant!
he doesn’t answer questions directly to the fans, as if “how dare we ask him”.
he is terrible at drafting players > dan bazuin!
bring in an offensive mind like jon gruden or mike shannahan or leslie frazier, **** lebeau to change this team’s philosophy.
I’m done with the cover 2, it works well for dome teams and teams that play in warm areas.
in the winter, the bears need big men on the line, both offensively and defensively.
those athletic linemen like gaines and tommie are not long term solutions because you gradually lose that quickness and you need to be big if you want to be around in the league.
the bears play in the nfc north, they are not going to survive playing a finesse tampa 2 the majority of the time when you don’t have urlacher, tommie harris, mik brown, or chris harris.
Tim from Woodstock
I’m so sick of hearing about the line needing to jell. The line doesn’t need to jell, it needs to stop not blocking. I wrote B&B about this last week, though I’m pretty sure it didn’t make the air.
The whole “line needs to jell” is ****. It’s **** at week 1 and as you mention it’s **** at week 6, 7, and beyond. The line doesn’t need to jell with each other to be effective. (Here it comes…) I played offensive line in high school (therefore, I know everything about blocking in the NFL).
Hub and may others argue that “they need to know what the guy next to them is going to do”. That’s right, they do. They need to know what they need to do, and ideally they need to know what everyone else is going to do. What they do is based directly on the play that’s called, the defense they are seeing, how they are lining up, and who they are playing.
All of this stuff is worked on throughout the season and leading up to the game to adjust to a specific opponent. This stuff doesn’t have anything to do with relationships, it is about knowing what assignments are. Knowing that Olin’s brother’s friend’s husband bought a new car last week has nothing to do with knowing assignemnts.
Beyond that, block someone. My girlfriend asked me the other day “Do you think that contract thingy for Cutler was good? He hasn’t done much has he?”
My response mentioned the fact that he’s always running for his life. The 30 million dollar man is going to be a broken pile of mush if he doesn’t get protection, and if people think that Devon Hester and 1st year WR Johnny Knox have the ability to do anything other than run the route thats designed then they are fooling them self. If Cutler has to run for his life on every snap, and the route is already run, what else can he do but force balls?
The Cutler acquisition was great but without an offensive line that protects him, he’s nothing more than a more electric and effective Rex Grossman.
david
cutler is getting pummeled,
we need big strong guys, not “athletic” guys that are past their prime>pace
and some WR talent>steve breaston in the offseason?
it all starts at the line, just ask the GM from Miami and see what he did when he first got there.
loco
I dont have any more energy to watch this games
they play like terrible
loco
bears are terrible they make me sick
Ken
Can’t believe I drove that far for that bad of a showing. Cutler’s body language says it all. He doesn’t have the confidence in his linemen to feel comfortable in the pocket regardless of the opposing team’s pressure. The WRs gained little to no separation, and when you have a receiving corps that isn’t physically intimidating or uniquely gifted, bad passes turn into bad interceptions. Defense didn’t want any part of Benson, and Ochocinco was right about our DBs.
Jon, Montgomery
lawrence, the bears were terrible in every aspect of the cincinnati game. #1. cutler turnovers, like you said, he needs to make smart decisions when hes getting rushed, when hes forced, if he can’t find an open receiver, he needs to throw it away. #2. the reason cutler is getting hurried is because of the O-line, olen kreutz… bad, frank omiyale… bad, chris williams… bad, roberto garza… bad, the only guy that i think on the O-line has done anything… orlando pace, but hes been slow and hes been making mental mistakes by commiting false starts. #3. matt forte? is it because of the bad O-line i just mentioned forte is’nt doing anything productive? i could be, but is matt having a sophomore slump? yes, the way that he has performed so far this season, he might be the most dissapointing player in the NFL, based on what people would think he would be from last season. #4. lovie smith’s defensive play calling, i’ve never seen the bears get scored on by their opponents first 7 possessions! no pass rush as you said lawrence, linebacker play has been bad, we got destroyed by ochocinco. #5. do you think the reason the wide receivers are bad is because of the O-line? i think so, because we can’t run the ball, that forces us to pass most of the time, and since the O-line has been turnstyles, cutler has to hurry, and the wide receivers can’t get into their routes and make their moves. that’s i gotta say, other than while i was watching the game, i started to feel sick, literally, i went to the docter this morning and i do have the flu. so, i think the bears play on sunday, made me literally sick. maybe it will pass when we clobber the browns next week… hopefully.
Thomas Dunne Jr.
Lawrence I think what we saw was evidence we need to start over, front office, coaches everybody but Cutler.
The key to the 1986 Super Bowl Team can be summed up defensively Hampton, Mc Michael, Fridge, Dent and offensively Covert, Bortz, Hilgenberg, Thayer, Van Horne.
Some things never change – you need to build teams from the lines out – do Pace (2009 version), Olimarye, Kruetz (also 2009 version), Garza, Williams compare in any way shape or form to the 1985 group – no and they never will – we need to start over here – should never be this bad if we want to get off the bus running. Cedric played with more heart than he had as a Bear but he had holes and creases to run through. Our line goes backwards on a run play, the Bengals on average pushed our line back at least 3 yards on every play. Cutler will never realize his potential with these guys protecting him and run blocking for whoever you put at running back.
Defensively do Brown, Harris, Adams, Oguleye compare to the 1985 Bears, no again. If we don’t get it right up front we can’t go further than we have already been and we seem to be going backwards not forward.
I think it’s time to jetison the dead weight of a coaching staff that can’t develop young talent make adjustments, and get a team ready to play on Sunday. Jetison a general manager that doesn’t know how to build a team from the lines out.

The players play the game. They stunk… You can blame the coaching if they didn’t practice or prepare and I doubt you can say that… Stop with the ‘85 Bears. That’s more than 25 years ago… Forgive me, but the same Head Coach and GM had a so-so team in the Super Bowl less than three years ago. If we had Cutler in ‘07 would be ever bring up the ‘85 bears? I suspect that you want to run another coach out of town just because they get blown out of one game. They should have beat GB and ATL, but the players blew both games, not the coaches. It’s easy to blame coaches because you a typical Chicago media type that is too afraid to call the players out for fear of having to go to the locker room and do interviews.

maybe if there was some serious focus on getting players we needed in the off-season, instead of making a lateral move at quarterback, we wouldn’t be in this situation. You can’t coach bad personnel. Also olin kreutz should have been gone years ago, he’s bad at shotgun snaps and regular snaps! Think back to all the bad snaps to Grossman and Orton.
SirCharles
Should I pick Cleveland over the Bears for Sundays game?
OlinsBadLongSnaps
I thought I was snapping the ball to Verne Troyer last Sunday.
Mikeytron
This is the first time a really long time that I became angry at the Bears. My afterenoon was set up around this game and I thought I would be entertained. I was wrong! I really gave up on the getting pissed thing with pro sports a long time ago. It wasn’t worth it. So I watch for fun and enjoyment and listen to The Score for the same. What I saw on Sunday was “Basura”. A “waste ” of my time. I thank the bad Bears teams years ago for me getting back into H.S. and College sports but I will not go full circle again. Reading Laurence and listening to Hub before the game, and many others, Lovie just doesn’t think we the fans or the media are important enough to answer the questions. I guess next week he can relish in the win against a piece of **** team. I’ll say this to Lovie: I don’t care if you beat Cleveland next week. In sports, but pro sports especially, I am looking for consistency and I just don’t see it. I don’t care if Forte gets 250 yards against the Browns. What do we get day in and day out? So far not much of anything. This team is becoming increasingly UNLIKEABLE. That is BAD. This past summer with the Cubs was bad enough for one year with an unlikeable team!
izer54
This all stems from the fact that we got beat on the lines on both sides of the ball. Does anybody remember, Dan Bezine,Michael Haynes, “Tank” Johnson,Dusty Dvoracek. Missed picks on the defensive line. Leon Joe,Mickael Okwo,Joey LaRocque,Marcus Freeman,Joe Odom. Missed picks in the linebacking core. Don’t get me started in the secondary! O.K. now for the offensive line, Terrance Metcalf, Mike Gandy,Mark Colombo,Tyler Reed and too many others to list. This game was the cumulative failure of management, ownership and coaching. Tell me other that Lance Briggs who have the Bears drafted that is a current player that is playing at a pro bowl level? NOBODY! They cannot fine talent in the draft and they have failed to make the players they do draft better! Time to clean house!
Lonnie Shetler
This team has a LOT of serious issues! Where do you start? 2 definate priorities are getting rid of Lovie and getting some go-to-receivers (& a tight-end) !!!!
Steve Wagner
I was wondering about Cedric. He seemed bigger yet faster, seems like something the Bear staff should look into.
Jimbo
Are you suggesting the bears develop stonger yet faster players? You might have what it takes to be a part of the bears coaching staff!
SHARK
LoHo, I thought you were going to have a heart attack on the air just like Doug & O.B. Sunday after that debacle in Cincinnati. For what it’s worth, the only good thing about Sunday’s game was the sight of FOX Sports’ sideline reporter Laura Okmin on the crew with Sam Rosen & Tim Ryan. As for the game, Lovie Smith didn’t have the Bears prepared to play and a lot of the blame for Sunday’s ugly loss has to be pointed at him and his coaching staff. If you thought this past Sunday was bad, the (expletive) will hit the fan if the Bears lose to the lowly Browns at Soldier Field.
TinMan
How much would Cowher,Gruden,Shannahan or Dungy cost us? Lovies D got burned every way possible and he never changed his scheme, that’s poor coaching bottom line. Players play I understand that but, we were totally unprepared for what the Bengals did to us. His inability to make adjustments is a glaring weakness in his coaching style…….he needs to go period.
TJ
I spilled my kool-aid last Sunday. Need a refill please. A blowout victory versus the Browns is in order.
StevePhillipsBirthmark
Laura Okmin doesn’t do it for me. I prefer the likes of Brooke Hundley or Natalie from the Facts of Life.
Slovak Dave
Lawrence, I wonder if Lovie’s dual role of trying to be head coach and defensive coordinator is starting to catch up with him and the Bears. And maybe Lovie made the decision to have the two roles because he assumed that he would have his defensive captain for the vast majority of games. Now with Urlacher out for the year that plan is looking a little shaky.
Consider 1. Not having the defense ready to handle the no-huddle from Atlanta, 2. The team making so many key mistakes after having a bye week to prepare for Atlanta, 3. the team being so completely unmotivated and unprepared for the Bengals.
Has the league caught up with early changes that Lovie and Rod Marineli have brought to the defense?

Peppers One-and-Done?

One of the Bears’ savviest-ever moves was the hiring of former agent Cliff Stein in 2002. Three years ago, he was put in charge of all player-contract negotiations as Senior Director of Football Administration and General Counsel. Since then, the team has balanced nicely their major expenditures and cap flexibility, maintaining the liklihood [...]

Normally i like arguing with you because it is like a sport, but today you will get nothing but a solemn nod of the head in agreement. We were totally underprepared and overwhelmed and I am scared to think that this game was indicative of the state of the team. I would much rather explain it away as a bad game, an exception to the rule. Hell a perfect storm of every deficiency we have as a team, but I have a nagging feeling that it is not, and that our ‘command’ may need shaking up.
