Boers and Bernstein Show - Written by Bernstein on Thursday, October 29, 2009 7:28 - 99 Comments
Bulls, Bears and “WYC?”
A banged-up Bulls team trying to tread water into the free-agent offseason opens at home against the Spurs tonight, and here’s what you need to know about them on ‘09-’10:
they are still overreliant on jump-shooting, which means both winning and losing games they shouldn’t. It does not appear that their desultory training camp was an ample crucible to forge the steel of true, team defense, and such things are rarely learned as the year goes on. Forty wins is a reasonable goal in a mediocre East, and they will have to overcome a rough early schedule — something they have done before to reach the playoffs. There is no title trajectory yet, and even the addition of Chris Bosh (he’s the latest target of fans’ roster-lust) would not seem to put them in that picture.
GM Gar Forman deciding to loom over the proceedings by traveling with the team — “I want to be around the players and I want to be around the coaching staff — is a bad call, and John Paxson should keep this from happening. His presence undermines Vinny’s perceived authority (not that there is much), and will cause player discomfort in the locker room.
On the subject of bad decisions, why does Lovie Smith pretend that there is a material difference whether or not an upcoming opponent knows that Josh Beekman is playing? Seriously, there is not one practice rep that changes with that knowledge.
We’ll have Zach Zaidman’s Bears report today, the Second Half at 3:30 and “Who You Crappin?” at 5:00
Tomorrow, the Bud Light “Who Needs Two?” Tavern Tour finds us at Hawthorne Racecourse, where we will help raise money for the autism charity INFEAT.

I hope the bulls get to the playoffs and have another thrilling first round loss. then they can make more commercials on comcast that make it seem like they won a championship.

Defending that pesky “Best series ever” title is tough.

If Ron Zimmer = Jerry Angelo , Mitch Rosen = Lovie Smith and Boers and Bernstein =the players
whose fault is it that this show sucks.
Chris in Scottsdale
Even if the Bulls do land one (or two) of the grand prizes in the NBA’s free-agent pool this upcoming offseason, does anyone really feel confident in Vinny’s ability to take it to a championship? Say the Bulls win 45 games and find themselves a 6-7 seed in the East. That will be two seasons of upward movement- can you fire Vinny? I know the short answer is yes, of course you can, but… ugh. It’s going to be a mess for at least a year, even if they do get Bosh+1 (or whomever) in the offseason.

Hey everyone Bernstein stayed off of hockey for almost a week! He did try to redeem his stupidity by doing a weak copy and paste job from a “Local Hockey Writer” that did in fact show him that fighting does have it’s place in the sport even without the enforcers. Nice try mouseboy, stick to basketball and trying to make people think your “Down” with hip hop.
I truely believe Bernstein thinks he will lose his pseudo street credibility if he were to take hockey seriously, or at least admit he was wrong to bash a sport without understanding it or its long tradition. Can somone please call him and tell him he never had any street credibility to begin with because thats more annoying then his prissy little whiney voice.
Matt Spiegel’s Annoying Laugh
Skater….you’ve presented us with quite the argument. Just a couple Q’s:
1) Why does Bernstein need pseudo street cred?
2) Why is he wrong to bash hockey for fighting?
3) Why does hockey’s tradition matter at all? Please note that America has had some “traditions” that weren’t necessarily pleasant or positive.
Crash Corrigan
Strange that MLB used oddball actor and avowed non-baseball fan Richard Dreyfuss (remember his weird appearance in September during Cubs 7th inning stretch) as its pregame voiceover for all things October – November. Anything for a buck or a Buck (Joe), I suppose. As I understand it, Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia are the 2 best pitchers going and Cleveland had them both as recently as 2 seasons ago. But now they have Kerry Wood instead. Are the Indians the Cubs East or something?
TERRY
Skater RIch
1) Why does Bernstein need pseudo street cred?
He doesn’t need pseudo street cred because thats what he has. It’s not real but he somehow thinks he has it.
2) Why is he wrong to bash hockey for fighting?
Because it’s part of the game, it always has been and the fact that he thinks he can step in and change the face of the game by throwing his 2 cents in over his mundane and repetitive radio show is disrespectful.
3) Why does hockey’s tradition matter at all? Please note that America has had some “traditions” that weren’t necessarily pleasant or positive.
I can’t believe this is even a question but I’ll answer anyway. There are reasons for all traditions whether it looks wrong or right to the public or media. Why is there hazing in all sports? Why is there plunking in baseball? Why do we sing the anthem before games? Why do we sing Let’s go White Sox or Go Cubs Go? It’s tradition and if your a fan you respect the traditions because they have been passed down for decades, even centuries. So how can a know nothing moron like Bernstein come on his show and make a long standing tradition in a sport he knows nothing about look stupid? Tradition is tradition and there is a reson for fighting in hockey, it can change the outcome of the game and if you dont know why, then I suggest you start watching and understand the game before you make judgements or take the side of an ignornat fool.
Matt Spiegel’s Annoying Laugh
I’ll answer in a couple parts.
- I don’t think Bernstein was trying to change the game. I think he was merely voicing his opinion and arguing that fighting in hockey is stupid, and he’s right. It doesn’t give a team a competitive advantage (unless you’re talking about the opposing team). And how was him voicing his opinion disrespectful?
- “Tradition is tradition” is, frankly, a dumb argument. Just because it’s a tradition to fight in hockey doesn’t mean that it’s right or that it helps a team. I’m still waiting for you to explain how fighting in hockey helps a team. Call me ignorant all you want, but fighting in hockey doesn’t give a team an advantage.
BVEL
Drop gloves and solve it on the ice ladies!!!
Skater RIch
@Matt Spiegel’s Annoying Laugh
apparenty you don’t watch hockey. The advantage of fighting in hockey is something you need knowledge of hockey to understand. I never said that the “Goons” that were once part of hockey were part of the tradition but when an opposing teams players are deliberately abusing your offensive talent you cant let it slide, it’s part of the game. You need to understand how the lines work and how the coaches create match-ups. It’s the same thing as protecting your little brother or sister if you need an example. If you understand that you will understand why they send a “Goon” or an enforcer out to handle the problem. As soon as you put a little fear into the opposing team, letting them know that if they mess with the offensive talent there will be a price to pay and it often times works. If you spend the time to watch hockey and learn about it you will know. I have seen countless games that were turned around by the use of a fight. You have to know why it’s happening, it’s not for nothing. Usually players like Patrick Kane need protection and without it he will never score. If he is getting beat up out there by guys twice his size the enforcer on Kane’s line needs to take care of business. If the player covering Kane is crossing the line a lot of times a fight will happen just to let that player know he can’t keep doing it, I’m sure they tried other ways of stopping them (ha ha) but thats what works and thats why they allow it. Love it or hate it, it’s part of the game and it’s tradition.
Skater RIch
Just to give all you non-hockey fans a glimpse of who covers Kane, google Zdeno Chara. Don’t you think he needs a little beat down after seeing that monsteer crush your little sniper?

I can honestly say he is more tolerable to listen to then Bernstein but he is just as negative and all he does is agree with Bernsteins garbage. They both stink.
The score needs to realize that some fresh talent in that spot would bring in a lot more listeners and advertisers. They need to get a team that actually finds pleasure in watching and following sports. These two seem to hate everything about it and take it out on people who actually like it.

There’s no difficulty, I want them gone and you dont. Your an idiot (used a little Bernstein tactic on this one).

I get into the same argument about Hockey with my best friend, and he gets sooooooo frustrated. He then talks about how he hates Bernstein, though he’s never listened to him, simply on his stance regarding Hockey fighting.
All I asked was questions like “Why?”, and “How does a 5-minute major help your team?”
Boy, does that piss him off. The funny part is, he’s a former pro hockey player (various teams in the CHL from ‘92-’96), and all he can say is “If you don’t understand, I can’t explain it to you”.
If the NHL is truly interested in protecting its flashier star players, then they would find another way than allow/encourage players to beat the **** out of eachother. Install stiffer penalties for dirty play.
The ‘Dan Line’ didn’t do much to protect Eric Lindros from a jillion concussions after the fact- by the time they would fight to ‘defend their man’, Lindros was probably passed out in a bathtub somewhere. His enforcers didn’t do a whole lot of good in regards to extending his career.

Yeah seriously Skater Rich, your problem is easily solved by just turning off your radio. If you want a bunch of “yahoo”, “go get-ems” just watch ESPN all day or turn on TSN because if I’m reading you correctly you are a dumba$$, ugly, albino canadian. Your theory of hockey fighting tradition is a stale as a ****. If Patrick Kane needs protection he can pick up a pack of trojans before he assaults a cabbie. Skater Rich, you are probably the classic hockey jock idiot who used to leave the ten reasons to date a hockey player list on your locker in high school. (http://www.angelfire.com/sk/goalieannex/humor/humor32.html) Like this hockey loser. Save yourself some time and dignity and just stop commenting or writing anything at all because you are such a flaming moron that any more time you spend trying to use your brain hurts humanity.

Ummm Tiki, it’s no wonder you can’t understand hockey because I’m not on the fence you moron, reading comprehension….It’s a good skill to have when using the internet. These are the mental midgets that listen to B&B, it’s no wonder.
BVEL
Bizkit what Johnson do you speak of Joe johnson???
Bizkit
To BVEL
Yeah I meant Joe Johnson.
truth teller….
I disagree with the Bosh comment. First of all if you think the Bulls are a 40 win team now with a 20 year old Rose and not much help…….well then a more mature, better version of DRose, mixed in with Bosh and some good parts around them could equal 50-55 wins consistently in the East. Plus we don’t know where Lebron will be going, the Celtics run would be close if not done completely, and that would leave Orlando. The East wouldn’t be that difficult.
Bink
B&B like Charlie Manual ……..when Lou talks that way they call him dumb shows what we have learned about sports today listening to this program….not much
Skater RIch
The only thing you learn from this show is how to be bitter and annoying. I know these two loads were severely picked on in H.S. Maybe thats why they are such deutsche banks.
Bizkit
I agree with their statements about the Bulls and their futures but the Boys are just way up Lebrons butt, they think hes going to be this perennial champion when the guy still hasnt found a way to win the big one. The talent excuse is running out because Lebron does have a good enough team around him to compete.
Bosh makes the Bulls better but if the Bulls somehow can get Bosh and Joe Johnson that’s your eastern conference champion.
General Soreness
That it very offensive and invidious, Skater Rich. You are entitled to your opinion and I have no problem with that. It is a free country but to say that all of us B & B listeners are “mental midgets” is just downright disparaging. I am an intelligent family man with great kids who I am raising in the right way, my wife and I run a profitable business despite this terrible economy and I step out into the world everyday with a positive attitude and a helping hand. According to you, because I am a fan of this show it makes me less of a human being than you. I feel sorry for you.
BVEL
Bizkit, what’s crazy about Bosh and Johnson are exactly the 2 guys I wanted to go after. My buddies and I discussed possible scenarios for next year for a top tier and top 2nd tier guy and those are the two names we came up with….. Rose, Johnson, Deng?, TT, Noah??? If Bosh and/or JJ (not reddick) come our way, we are a 50-55 win team for sure. I would say 4th in the East and 3-5 games behind CLE in the standings….. however, if Lebron leaves or gets no help we might pass them up…..
Bizkit
My perfect Bulls lineup would be this.
C- Chris Kaman ; I would trade Noah for Kaman, he brings rebounding and inside scoring but his injury history and price tag makes me shy away. Noah can be the rebounder we need him to be if we have Bosh at the 4.
PF- Bosh – His perimeter game is strong and he can take advantage of slower 4’s in the post, hes not a #1 scorer but hes very talented and dangerous to guard.
SF- Joe Johnson – Can score and has a decent all around game, I love what he can bring to the Bulls.
SG- Kirk Hinrich – When you have Bosh and Johnson at the 4 and 3 your not going to need much production out of the 2. Kirk brings you a decent defender who can score at times.
PG- Rose – Once those driving lanes are cleared because of Bosh, Rose will be able to score at will when taking it to the basket.
6. James Johnson – Dont count him out, very talented and has a bright future.
7. draft picks – Cole Aldrich is my guy in 2010 and Paul George if picked can be an instant defensive force, think Mbahamute with longer arms.
BVEL
Bizkit, I really like where you are going there. I am just worried about the Bulls “affording” both Bosh and Johnson…. Bosh is going to want Max and Johnson prolly wants more than Deng money…… Is there any way to get Deng off the books???
Bizkit
Well obviously the only way I see both Bosh and Johnson on the Bulls would be if we can trade Deng away, if Deng has a 18 and 6 season I think his trade value goes back up. Well if Deng averages 18 and 6 why should we trade him you ask? Well for one Johnson is a better player and fits so much better with Rose than the un athletic Deng.
TERRY
Does ZZ (aka caroot crotch) do his Bears report while sucking off lovie juron????
Chris in Scottsdale
The only way to get Deng off the books is to put someone else’s poo on the books. It’s not going to happen. We’re stuck with him.
As far as Kaman-for-Noah, why in the world would the Clippers do that? I’d love it, personally, as I think he’s got 2-3 more years left as a productive player, but I can’t see the Clips letting him go.
I’d love that starting lineup too, but you’re looking at about a $70 million cap hit on it, aren’t you?
SHARK
Guys, I heard the start of your show earlier this afternoon. So new Bulls’ GM Gar Forman wants to travel on road trips with the team, based on a story Fred Mitchell wrote in the Trib today. I don’t think that’s a smart idea, and it reminds me of when your boss is constantly looking over your shoulder at work. I think it’s very uncomfortable and unprofessional. It makes you wonder if the noose is already tightening around head coach Vinny Del Negro’s neck, even if he coaches the Bulls back to the NBA Playoffs for the second straight year. What Forman should be doing right now is watching as much video as possible on the likes of Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and the other free agents that the Bulls have a shot to pick up in the much-talked about 2010 Free Agent Class & what moves the Bulls should make around the NBA Trade Deadline, much like last year. Forman’s place is as far away from venues the Bulls are playing in such as Boston’s TD BankNorth Garden, Miami’s AmericanAirlines Arena and Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena as possible. VDN, his staff and the players need their own space.
BVEL
You basically will have to give nearly 2 max contracts to Bosh and Johnson, Bosh is making 15.779 and Johnson is making 14.977 this year…… Trade Deng to the knicks for ANYONE…. Hughes, Curry, Harrington…..any big bad expiring contract is what you are looking for, or eating a lot of money with deng…..
Bizkit
To Chris
The Clippers are bad, they will be bad again this year.
Why continue to hold on to guys like Kaman and Camby when the Clips have younger and cheaper guys like Jordan and Griffin to develop?
Skater RIch
@ General Soreness, my bad for lumping all B&B fans as a whole. I just can’t understand how intelligent sports fans can find entertainment in listening to these morons. They are so negative about everything and not only make fun of Chicago sports fans but their own listeners as well. More power to you if you take offense at my comments and not the abuse these 2 humps shell out on the Chicago sports fans everyday.
Gas Can
Bulls – They define the term mediocre and will continue to do so until another superstar is added to the roster with Rose. Until then pay them no mind as they are not serious about winning it all until that happens.
B&B on hockey – All hockey discussion during the hours of them being on the air should be ignored at all costs. Why aggravate yourself if you’re a hockey fan? Bernstein occasionally comes off as thinking he know everything about everything but his hockey IQ proves he doesn’t. But big deal….plenty of other places to get a NHL fix. By the way, besides Mac you’ve got Hanley in the AM who has some Blackhawk intelligence.
Hockey fighting – Guys that have played the game will always try to tell you that there is a place for fighting in the NHL. I agree that was the case forever but recent rule changes that have sped up the game have made dopes that can only fight obsolete. A guy like Seabrook can obviously fight but it penalizes the team if he disappears for 5+ minutes (an extra 2 minutes if he is the instigator) so you don’t want him dropping the gloves. And you can’t punch a guy that is wearing a face shield without busting your hand so that eliminates half the players in the league right there.
800 hp
skater rich you hit the nail on the head! Well said about why there’s still fighting in hockey. If it didn’t have it’s place or give a team a competitive edge it would have been outlawed a long time ago.
Hey ‘Matt Speigels annoying…’
Ask the teams from the 70’s if the Broad Street Bullies success had anything to do with their style of play.
Ask Wayne Gretzky if he would have had the success he had if it wasn’t for the presence of Maryy McSorely and Dave Semenko….
Ask Brian Burke if that element of fisticuffs on his Anaheim team had anything to do with them winning the Stanley Cup.
People that want to outlaw fighting in hockey won’t ever change their minds. They always will counter the argument with the same old ****. And before someone mentions Detroit again maybe you should read their coach’s comments from earlier this season after they signed ENFORCER Brad May.
Keep it up skater rich! You have a few allies out here!
800 hp
Gas Can… So guys like Brashear, Orr, Laraque, Janssen, Parros, Eager, Thornton, Hordichck, Boogaard can’t play hockey? They are all goons, eh? Recent rule changes make the need for an “enforcer” even more prevalent. Sorry but with the speed nowadays if someone knees a guy or goes for a headshot they can really mess a guy up(Toews), clean hits or not. In the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s it was all clutch and grab not to mention the 2 line pass rule. Nowadays it’s even more important for a team to be held accountable for trying to run the skill guys. That’s a fact. Oh, and most guys wearing shields won’t fight anyway so that has nothing to do with it.
Try winning the Stanley Cup with your top line on the IR.
Strechylooksup
Jajaja WTF is wrong with these callers that can’t get to the point? F****** idiots
Bizkit
OMG Dan sounds like such an idiot. WHO, WHat BIG MAN!
Obviously the caller is not going to have a list of which big men are available for trades right now.
Bosh is a top tier player, is he a MAX player maybe not but it does not change the fact that hes going to get paid like one.
Amare might be available hes a guy who can get the Bulls in a better position to win a title.
Maybe Al Horfort might be available, a guy who can be great in 2 more years.
Brock Lopez is a young star on the rise.
The idea that there is nobody out there that the Bulls can get at the 4-5 to beat the Great Lebron (how many titles does he have Dan?) no matter what is just dumb.
Bizkit
No more calls on basketball from White people…..
No wonder why the afternoon saloon wins the ratings war.
Skater RIch
Dude, the level of hockey stupidity around here is crazy. I can’t say amazing because it is more of a niche sport so I’m not suprised. What is amazing is that Gas Can even mentioned shields. Pay attention to who wears shields and who is fighting.
Why do these morons comment on things they have no knowledge of? YOU MAKE YOURSELF LOOK STOOOOOPID!
One more reason not to mention Detriot again, I guess that hit on Havlat by Kronwall in the playoffs last year was because the Red Wings are such nice guys? Because they dont have big bodies to knock skill guys around right? Sorry I have to keep using only Hawks references but I dont think any of these tree huggers even know who Thornton or Boogaard are…which in itself is sad.
Good lookin out 800hp.
SPAULDING!
The Simpson’s spoof on U.F.C. was pretty sharp:
“at least, in football and hockey, someone is trying to put something in a goal or some kind of a zone.
Football is, inherently, brutal. There will be, at least, eight guys on every play that are going to knocked around on every down. How much gouging is going on for those “loose balls?”
I like football. but the players police themselves, because the refs rarely see the first after the whistle foul.
Theoretically, you can play an NHL game without anyone taking a hard hit (probably not a ride against the boards), but you can’t play a modern NBA game without contact.
The purpose of an NHL goon is not to start fights, his purpose is to try to take some guys head off or knees out without the refs blowing the whistle. If one team has a goon or two their opponent has to have a reason to make that guy think twice about his role on the team.
If hockey were truely neanderthalic, more goalies would be getting scraped off the ice.
SPAULDING!
Kronwall’s hit was filthy. Even if Havlat had the puck, Kronwall left his skates, and had no intention of playing the puck.
How would game six had played out if Havlat was on the ice? (Huet had to stop Chelios from winning it in regulation!)
Skater RIch
In the 1980s the Gretzky Era hit its stride, and so did fisticuffs. We all know “The Great One” was immensely talented, but at 6′0″ and 185 pounds, was also an easy target for bigger, stronger players. His numbers with Edmonton in the 1980s would have been unlikely if not for the protection of tough guys like Dave Semenko and Marty McSorley.
This is the reason for the fighting, without it “The Great One” might have been just okay…ha ha.
Russ
Why does a caller need to be able to name which player they want to be able to identify the Bulls have a weakness at power forward?
I have known for 20 years the Bears needed a quarterback. I was not aware Jay Cutler was available until they got him. What I did know is that I wanted the best available quarterback. The Score itself is running a poll on what is the Bears biggest weakness. It doesn’t list a bunch of offensive lineman, and ask which one do you want. The caller clearly stated he wanted a big man. What the caller was pointing out was he felt that need was more important than getting guard help.
You tried to make him look like a complete ***, but you came off sounding like the ***. Talking over someone because you can does not mean you proved your point.
You sounded like a fool.
Skater RIch
oh and 800hp, you better call the “Broad Street Bullies” the Philadelphia Flyers, tree huggers on here dont know what your talking about.
Skater RIch
That hit on Havlat was so filthy, I can’t say we would have won any more games with him in but it sure would have helped. I guess they knew what clutch player to take out to make sure the Hawks didn’t start a come back. Funny that it happened in the only game the Wings lost too. Now what? Burish and Eager are gone and those snipers we have are in the crosshairs of a lot of hard hitting mofo’s. Hope for the best I guess.

SPAULDING!
I think fighting has diminished (since the Ducks entered the league), and I enjoy the faster game.
The cry for a two-line pass was an attempt to eliminate the regular season sludge fests of neutral traps and board scraping. Think about how many goalies got to extend their careers while the puck stayed between the dots for so many seasons.
