No Brownie Points

I guess Frank Omiyale wasn’t the reason the offensive line has been incompetent.

The Bears’ offseason acquisition was replaced by Josh Beekman yesterday, and still that group was utterly inept at both protecting Jay Cutler and blocking the run.  Cutler was pulped by a bad defense, and play-calls were eventually pared to receiver-screens and “zero” routes to keep him ambulatory.  Kevin Shaffer more at tackle?  Help from off the street?  Tough questions for Harry Hiestand?  The battle is being lost up front in every way imaginable, and the Bears were lucky to be facing a genuinely bad team.

Do you think Cleveland DC Rob Ryan acts like such a histrionic mountain-man to draw the camera, and publicly differentiate himself from Eric Mangini and the other side of the ball?  I do.  And, thanks to e-mailer The Pope of Chili Town, we have a new picture of him:

http://img5.allocine.fr/acmedia/medias/nmedia/18/70/65/38/19106375.JPG

We’ll discuss every aspect of the game this afternoon, and will carry Lovie Smith’s soporifics from Halas Hall.  Zach Zaidman will file a report.

Miami did what it looks like evenly-matched teams will have to do against the Bulls this year:  clean up the defensive glass diligently and deny opportunities in transition.  Tyrus Thomas was benched for the entire fourth quarter.  I know Luol Deng was hitting some midrange shots, but was that really an isolation for him on the wing in a late-game situation, or was my TV suffering damage from having to convey the Bears game earlier?

I put this in as an update Friday, but it should be mentioned again.  Our website received three million pageviews in the month of October, which was a year-to-year increase of 500%.  This blog is by far the most active and energetic of any on the site, so thanks to all readers/commenters.  Keep up the fire and the passion.  ;)

Bears beat the Browns yesterday. Who cares. Most high school teams could do the same, and probably wouldn’t have to rely on questionable officiating to help keep alive two of their scoring drives to do so either. I still don’t know how they overturned the Cutler fumble. Or at the very least didn’t call it intentional grounding on the drive that turned into the first field goal. The roughing the passer penalty that led to the first touchdown was at least a little better. I have seen it both called and not called. I think that was a call you get when you play at home, one you don’t get when you are on the road.

The Bears are what they are. A bad team that has won all of their games primarily because of bad field goal kicking by opponents, and facing extremely bad quarterbacks. When you’ve been lucky enough to have faced Seneca Wallace, Duante Culpepper, and Derek Anderson in your first 7 games, you better have won all three of those games.

Unfortunately the Bears can take nothing from yesterdays win.
The Browns are not competitive in this league. That is bad for the NFL.
Only a false sense of, how good you think you are, remains after beating such a bad team.
Why isn’t Brady Quinn given chance over there.

Yesterday’s win against Cleveland was the equivalent of when the Cubs play the Pirates and win. In these types of games, you look at the things that were bad and pretty much throw out the good things like the defense getting the 5 turnovers.

The bad: To me the offensive line was still terrible. Cutler was sacked what 5 times, and Matt Forte averaged 3.5 yards a carry. I really thought the offense as a whole sucked yesterday. They had countless chances to score touchdowns early on and settled for field goals. If it wasn’t for the defense setting them up, they may not have scored 20 points yesterday.

Also thought the defensive line played bad. They sacked Anderson one time, and for most of the second half the Browns were running the ball and getting 5 or 6 yards right up the middle. Jamal Lewis averaged 4.3 yards a carry, and many of the runs was when this was still a 16-6 game.

Let’s all enjoy this win because we won’t see another one until December 6th when the Rams come to town. Arizona losing to Carolina yesterday I think really hurts the Bears’ chances of beating them next week. The game in SF being on the road is probably the difference to tilt that one the 49er’s way. Unless there is some major improvement, the Bears have no chance against the Eagles and Vikings.

Going forward (meaning next year) how do you fix the offensive line? Cutler is going to be absolutely killed at some point soon, that’s bad.

I suppose they could try moving Williams to the left side and put Shaffer at RT. Pace is dead weight. He can’t block anyone. I’ve also noticed that the backs aren’t doing a real good job pass blocking either.

That was for this year. As for next, I’m guessing the only real option is to bring in some FA O lineman. Angelo doesn’t do a good job drafting them.

Oh it looks like The fire and the passion did get a brownie point. Kinda like a reach around….ha ha.

Does anyone really care about the Payton statue? Heard M&H mention it and it’s just sad that this field was dedicated to Veterans who lost their lives in wars that gave us our freedom and somehow people want to forget that. They want to go against a rule set up by the family who gave the land up to the city. I know Walter was the best player to ever grace the gridiron but come on…Is nothing sacred? Have the people of the United States removed themselves this far from what really matters? I know it’s not the end of the world but it is a small statement that sports play a bigger role in out lives then the men and women who gave up their lives so we can have such freedoms.

i think/hope that when jerry angelo said, “we now know what we need to do to build around Cutler” he was thinking line first, top line reciever second. Since all y’all will demolish the line as they should be demolished and bashed, i wanna go a different route. The lack of a sizeable skilled receiver really rears it’s ugly head in the red zone. Of knox’s and hester’s touch down receptions, they each have a bomb, a catch and run, knox caught a slant and hester caught a pass two yards shy of the end zone and wiggled his way in. the other touchdowns were to tight ends, two to davis, 3 to olson. when they get near the goal line, a fifth grader who has played enough madden in his day could tell you, play action fake, dump to tight end or run it up the gut. that’s it. aside from knox’s slant, those are the only pass plays turner calls, and my guess is, it has everything to do with a lack of size and skill at the wide receiver. Favre looks to sidney rice who is a big guy. Warner looks for Anquan Boldin. Palmer has OchoCinco and Chris Henry, Cutler has di ck. Bennett who outside the 20’s has played well has 0 touchdowns and can’t get himself open in the redzone. They are two small and not good enough route runners in those tight spaces to be good anwd this MUST be addressed going into next year.

chisox,

Although it would be nice if the Bears could play the Browns as many times a year as the Cubs play the Pirates. I will still stick with my the Bears will win one of those games (thus making them 2-5 at the end of the 7 weeks) you ran off at the end of your post, but will throw in that I do think you are correct about Arizona losing yesterday to Carolina as not being good for the Bear’s when they play them next week. You may also be right about the game in San Fran too, still it is the NFL and alot of these teams just can’t play good every week. The Bears have to hope they get the SF team that played the Falcons, and not the one that played the Colts yesterday. I do agree with you that I think they have little to no chance against Phil and Min. Right now McNabb is licking his chops looking at the Bear’s secondary, and Jared Allen is doing he same after seeing the offensive line yesterday.

I was at yesterday’s game and got to see everything from very close up. The only thing I can say is, Cutler is one, tough m**her f**ker!!! That line allowed him to get hit HARD on many occasions and he still got up (barely, a couple of times). I don’t know how many more of those hits he can take. Angelo needs to do whatever he can to protect his franchise QB.

That list of free agent O-lineman looks like a roster of Pro Bowlers compared to what was dressed in orange at Solider Field yesterday. Gaither, Mankins, McNeill, and Justice seem like the “cream” of that crop and they are all still young.

i agree with you mb, whole heartedly i do, but let’s face it as well, there is a reason why the playcalls are what they are around the goal line, and we could have at least had one or two more td’s if they had a sizeable playmaker for red zone situations. maybe they should have held onto Brandon Rideau

Maybe the McCaskey’s should stop broadcasting the games? Those contracts have to be worth a ton of money, think of what they can save! I mean it is kind of unfair to season ticket holders that we get to watch for free and they have to pay all that money. I would totally buy something like “Bears Vision” on a monthly basis just to watch them. I also think that to win we need to let Cutler go and get our draft picks or a few top prospects back in return. We draft well so why not? On top of all that, why not raise ticket prices by oh lets say $50. We love this team so lets help out any way we can.

McCaskey’s don’t broadcast any games other than the preseason ones. those are contracts done by the nfl and the networks, and the nfl simply sprads the money out to the teams. Remember, the bears are a franchise to the NFL and it’s the NFL’s business ultimately. They hold all the trademarks, the licensing rights, television broadcast rights. All business done by the bears franchise has to be done within the rules and guidelines of the NFL and a percentage of profits garnered by the Bears has to be given to the NFL and spread out amongst the other teams. It’s not as easy, cut and dry with the NFL as it is with say the bulls, hawks, cubs and sox. Those four teams play over 80 games each and in the case of baseball 162 games. Those leagues can’t have exclusive national broadcast rights to all of their games the way football who plays once a week can. The broadcast companies need to be free to broadcast their other products. Of course, you probably know all of this skater rich and your above post is probably done with a sense of sarcasm, which is difficult sometimes to read in print

Sorry for throwing this out here but I remember a conversation regarding the window of opportunity for the Bears to win a super bowl. I don’t know if it was 8 years or 20 years but the explaination seemed to make complete sence. This team is family owned and has no other source of income. This team is not like the Blackhawks or the newly sold Cubs who can fall back on “Family” money while they make moves and hope to break even or cash in with a championship. Sure every team has a cap but some are able to let big money walk in hopes to save the season but the Bears can’t. I personally think a “Players Coach” is not the right fit for this team because of the ownership situation. I think the team has the talent but either lost the passion for the game or are simply abusing the system under Lovie and his “Respect the Players” coaching style. I mean, It’s finally coming out that the players have never seen “Coach” upset at them. WHY THE HELL NOT??? The Bears are laughing it up after losses, laughing all the way to the bank! They know the McCaskeys cant hand them walking papers and It’s a damn shame. I think it would be worth the 8 million bucks to see Lovie get the axe next year and get a coach who shows some emotion on and off the field. Long contracts and extensions are killing this team and without a fire under thier a$$es it will never end. If I was guaranteed my paycheck I would for sure not do my job the best I can, I’m human for God sake. What makes them any different? Incentives? Getting re-signed? Please….thats why contract years are so outstanding for athletes, thats why d-bags like Milton Bradley keep their mouth shut till they reach their at bats they need for a bonus.

Kinda sucks that the Bears owners weren’t the founders of McDonalds or some **** or we would contend every year instead of every 8 or 20, still don’t remember the number…..seems pointless.

The MEGA POINTS CYCLE against the Bulls continues.

The immortal five-time All Star Udonis Haslem had 19 points. Seriously, it’s scary that Tyrus only played (21 mins) 4 minutes more that Gibson (17 mins). If you could transfer Brad Miller’s basketball IQ into Tyrus’s body, you could have an awesome player. Once again the Bulls lost because their jump shots didn’t fall in the 4th quarter. Michael Beasley was god awful in that game. I haven’t seen someone get burned so much on defense since Toni Kukoc last played. “The Vikings wooed QB Brett Favre for months trying get the future Hall of Famer to come out retirement once again. He finally committed and the franchise has Super Bowl aspirations. The Vikings biggest problem remains their stadium situation. The Metrodome is one of the oldest buildings in the league and keeps the Vikings at the bottom of the NFL’s revenue standings. The team has not gotten anywhere trying to get funding for a new building from the state legislature. skater, the bears are in the top ten for revenues and profitability. the money is there, and angelo is spending. the problem is the coaches have no idea how to develop talent and the general manager overevalutes the potential of new talent. they are good at coaching “ready players” but in terms of getting unready players and making them ready, it’s not so good. that’s why they had to sign pace and shaffer. they had to gamble that they were ready. apparently, in pace’s case, he is post ready, which is why he is bad. but harry heistand needs to be held more accountable in terms of getting beekman, omilyelle and williams ready. the wide out coach should held accountable for not getting bennett, hester and knox ready for red zone situations. ron turner has to be held accountable for not holding them accountable and lovie smith needs to be held accountable for not holding ron turner accountable.

in terms of jerry angelo, he overevaluates his young players. ya know, letting thomas jones go because benson was ready. letting benson go because forte was ready. thinking kevin jones was the answer as back up running back. thinking that our wideouts are nfl redzone(the area that seperates productive recevivers with probowl receivers) ready. thinking nick roach is the answer as back up linebacker. for thinking any yahoo with a 4.5 40 can play safety. and for giving tommy harris an extension. the urlacher extension is comical as well. he needs to be held accountable by ted phillips. there is a difference between having money, spending it, thinking your spending it wisely and actually spending it wisely. Angelo thinks he is spending it wisely, but he is only batting about .500 in that area.

I agree the McCaskey’s make a fortune owning the Bears but it’s a family business that gets divided up in many ways. They are wealthy and want to stay that way. Any money wasted is money out of the family’s pocket so it’s not as easy for them to do as it is for other teams who are owned by corporations or family’s who generated wealth in other markets.

well they need a player development coach, and not so much a systems coach. fire passion emotion i don’t buy all that. i have seen ditka go off on players and have them both respond positivly and negativly. I also saw ditka be the same guy in new orleans and fail miserably. Bill Cowher displayed plenty of fire and passion, but his bread was buttered on getting all his players ready. one would go down like a greg lloyd to injury or free agency(kevin greene is another and there are countless others) and you would think, man, they are screwedd, and the next guy would come in and perform at nearly the same level and in some cases, beyond that level. His players were always prepared, and his teams always made the playoffs. the same could be said for Dungy but i don’t want dungy here. Andy reid is another whose players were always ready and same with holmgren. Shannahan was good at doing that offensivly, but not so much defensivly. that’s why i am not clamering for him. I would even if i owned the team, hire holmgren as gm and cowher as head coach. it always does and always will come down to talent evaluation and development. even tom ricketts knows that much

I won’t hold the Bears accountable for getting rid of Benson- no franchise short of the one with which he ended up would have put up with the **** the Bears had to. If Benson had pulled the stunts he did while Goodell was commish, he would be suiting up for the first time this weekend, as he’d just be coming off suspension. Two alcohol-related incidents in five weeks? Yeah, he’d be toast.

I will, however, hold them FULLY accountable for Thomas Jones. They looked at his age as the end-all of the conversation, neglecting to take into consideration that he had just 499 NFL carries when they obtained him (hard to believe the Cardinals had no clue about how good he was- how could they have been so bad for so long?). Now Jones is annually performing at a Pro-bowl level despite his advanced age, 31, which is ancient for a running back. He just now passed 2000 carries, and 2000-2500 carries is where most top backs tend to descend.

The problem was that they too quickly anticipated his demise. I can understand letting a player go a year early, but this is his third fantastic season in a row. It’s far more unsettling to me than Benson, who talked and loafed his way out of Chicago.

Nov 2, 2009 12:28

the bears’ attitude about drafting OL needs to change. Up to now, they look at O-linemen as unskilled FA’s who don’t deserve the money garnered by top draft picks. take a look at the bears’ drafts over the last 5-7 years….except for Chris Williams, you are hard-pressed to find an O-Lineman selected in any rounds outside of 6 or 7. while we’re at it, let’s have a quick review of some of those top picks:
2007 Dan Bouzin (2), Garret Wolfe (3)
2006 Dusty Dvoracek (3)
2005 C Benson (1), Mark Bradley (2)
2004 Terry Johnson (2) who ?
2003 Michael Haynes (1)

So maybe it doesn’t matter that we don’t want to draft unskilled FA offensive linemen in the top few rounds…but then it doesn’t appear like we can judge the ’skilled’ players either.

THE hawks have played well without toews. it’s so refreshing to see an organization hire a coach who can coach and develop talent. I am no hockey expert, but Quinville seems to be a mad scientist when it comes to drawing up lineups and creating line mismatches to cover up holes in talent. Now, his weakness at least this year is coming up with a magic solution for power play woes

Skater RIch

The whole front office from top to bottom is very good at creating depth, it is very refreshing especially as a Hawks fan to finally see that within the organization.

The power play will get better, it’s a long season and it might take time for it to click but it will. I think they just need to be more aggressive in front of the net and get the rebounds the defenseman are pounding in from the blue line. The puck seems to be bouncing right in front of the PK’s sticks all the time. That and some better passing during a PP, they seem to be right on the whole game and pass like garbage when it’s time for a PP.

Ladd is not a player like Steve Ott that has made his living by making hits on the fringe of what the rules allow and then not being held accountable because of the instigator rule. I hope they don’t suspend Ladd but in light of the recent rash of high hits in the NHL and all of the players that are on IR league-wide, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets at least one game for that hit.

I agree the PP will get better. Montreal attacked the puck a lot causing the ‘Hawks players to make quicker passes and not letting them get set up in Friday’s game. They’ll adapt to those kinds of tactics.

Yeah, Ladd shouldn’t get penalized too harshly, he’s not out to kill and the NHL knows it.

Bobby Jenks was fined what like $800 bucks after admitting he tried to plunk Ian Kinsler? No investigation, no denial, he openly admitted he tried to do it. These fines are all a big joke. They always fail to mention the ammount so you think it’s worse then it really is.

i thought the bulls game was more or less an entertaining smorgas borgue defensive plays. i liked the energy for about 45 of the 48 minutes, too bad they couldn’t have ended the game then.

Yes, the O-line has their issues….plenty. However, how many years did Ron Tuner spend pissing on the toilet seat, before someone told him to put it up? The offensive play-calling is just getting worse. The Chicago Bears should be able to do much better without this college coach calling plays. This needs to be his last season as the Bears OC….

Bad officiating, + bad field goal kicking by the other team + playing a team with a QB that wouldn’t even be a starter at most division 1A schools = a Bears win Anything else = a Bears loss

Guys, what in the hell was that yesterday at Soldier Field? Yeah, the Bears blew out the Browns 30-6, but it sure didn’t look like it! Jay Cutler was far from sharp throwing the football and it looked like Cutler was one vicious hit away from a Caleb Hanie sighting! Even with Beekman starting ahead of Omiyale, Cutler was constantly being pressured from the worst defense in the league! This is getting absolutely ridiculous!

the bears really are not a team I look forward to watching on Sundays. they’re not exciting at all.

they might sneek away 1 or 2 games from a decent team but we wiill win our games against bad teams the rest of the way.

and lovie will continue to tell us that we are making progress when it is going to be 3 straight years of no playoffs.

we will be 8-8 this year, cutler will have a sub par yeat because he will get pummeled all day.

here’s to mediocrity!

I don’t know why Ron Turner gets a free pass. Obviously the Bears o-line is bad, but so are the packers line and they still score points. Good coaches adjust their play calling to their personel. if you know your line cant sustain blocks, how about helping them out. Run the ball more, even if it means picking up 2 or 3 yards a carry. That leads to third and short and gives you options. If Turner keeps calling slow developing pass plays on first and second down, that will lead to third and long and teams sending the kitchen sink at Cutler. Turner is still calling plays like he has Kitner dropping back against big 10 defenses.

I know what you’re thinking reality 101.
Ron Turner must not like the way Matt Forte looks in practice.
The Bears were in no danger of losing that game yesterday. Sure, it looked ugly (a ton of Bears wins look ugly).
Turner may save his best play action against a difficult stretch. (The NFC West is all over the place).
The Packers should have won yesterday
and the league needs to launch some type of investigation into the Lions.

Spaulding! I don’t like the way Matt Forte looks in the game, but he is all they have. Garrett Wolfe hits the whole harder than Forte and he ways about 160. To bad he doesnt have the size to go with his heart.

The biggest problem with the Bears is their offensive and defensive lines are terrible. Both were outplayed by their Browns’ counterparts. They are going to have a hard time winning consistently. Now the Buffalo Bills have the greatest coach in the history of the NFL with di ck jauron. He will be in canton even if the bills don’t win again all year.
