Cardinal Sins
UPDATE: Smith PC moved up to 2:00.
Lovie Smith “talks to the media” at 2:30 today, and we’ll carry it live.
What he can say to ameliorate the feelings over yesterday’s shameful defensive effort, I know not. But he will speak nonetheless, and look toward the Thursday-nighter in San Francisco and the matchup with Mike Singletary — who, unfortunately for too many, is the living representation of ancient Bears glory.
Anybody for an extra game off for Tommie Harris? I don’t know the league/team protocol or precedent for such suspensions, but it would be satisfying if his unconscionably bad judgement had further consequence.
Remind me again what was said about Rod Marinelli: I think he was lauded as a DL coach because of his unmatched ability to prepare and motivate his “rushmen,” and his in-game tactical expertise was supposed to maximize every last bit of dormant talent. When does this happen?
And perhaps my biggest complaint about the defense is their utter inability to blitz effectively. I have never seen interior efforts so easily picked up, and the deep zones are left with exploitable holes. The whole point of overloading the pass rush is to get someone free to at least harass the QB, and it is not happening.
Offensively, Troy Aikman really called out the Bears receivers for not working hard enough to keep moving when Cutler escapes the pocket. Cutler is all this team has right now, and they are forced into high-risk, high-reward passing to maintain any threat to a defense. So find a way to make the most of it — just floor it and hope you don’t run off a cliff.
And, to add some creepy to your day, check out the new, white version of Sammy Sosa!

Jay Cutler’s Insulin Pump
can someone explain to me why other teams are so effective with the blitz, and the bears arent at all? I was watching the cowboys eagles game last night, and even though the eagles lost last night, i was interested in their defense. it seems that when the bears blitz, the receivers are WIDE open and the qb has time to find them. on one play, they showed the eagles blitzing, and the receivers were covered, forcing tony romo to take a sack. why cant we dial it up like that?
the problem is that the players arent very good. but when youre not very good, you need to adjust, in my opinion. Im a big fan of high school football, which is a tough comparsion, but when you have a team that is overmatched, that is when coaching and scheme come in. you need to try and confuse the opponent as much as possible, because confusion leads to mistakes.
sitting back in cover 2, tampa 2, whatever, does not work. nor does just playing man either. we dont have players to run either scheme. it boils down to the players not being good enough, and the coaches not being good enough.
the bears will go 7-9, winning against the rams, lions and packers.
2nd Half Adjustment
Hey, if Sammy can put out music like Michael, then more power too him…I guess.
The Bears biggest problem is an overall lack of talent. B&B have said it themselves, the Bears have 2 truly great players, one of offense (Culter) and one on defense (Briggs). Hester and Gould are above average NFL players at their respective positions (well, for Hester as a punt returner), but it is clear to me (again, with the caveat that I’m football retarded) that the Bears were totally unprepared to lose Brian Urlacher for any amount of time. Mercifully, I did not witness any of the game yesterday, but what on earth is wrong with Tommy Harris? Is it possible that he is just incredibly frustrated with what has happened to him and his career over the last 3 years, since signing that extension, and he just let his weirdness/immaturity completely boil over on the field yesterday?
Okay, so the Bears suck, the Bulls are mediocre, the Hawks are seemingly spinning their wheels (I’m completely clueless when it comes to hockey – I only know the Red Wings are always good)…is it baseball talking time yet?

Right now the only team I’ll say the Bears will beat the rest of the year is the rams. I know they probably won’t go 1-7 the last eight games, but I honestly can’t say they are better then Green Bay or good enough to win on the road in Detroit.
The Packers certainly have the wr’s and offensive weapons to exploit this crappy defense, and we all know how the Bears’ offense does against 3-4 defenses.
The Lions very well may have beaten the Bears at home if Stafford didn’t get hurt. All I remember from that game is Calvin Johnson destroying the Bears’ secondary, and I can definitely see that happening again.
Ok I take it back. Maybe the Bears only will win the one game against the Rams the rest of the year. Certainly wouldn’t shock me.

WHile Bernstein insists there’s no magic system, good coaches realize the abilities and limitations and adjust a scheme or game plan to those limits. The insistence on running the cover 2 when they don’t have the D-line to make it worth their while. Plus, why does Lovie insist on single covering the league’s best receivers.
Anyone forget how they thought it was a good idea to single cover Steve Smith in that playoff game.
And if the Bears don’t jettison Tommie Harris at the end of the year, the front office should be fired. Benson and Tank were headcases, but healthy headcases. Tommie is physically done and a headcase.

Is it bad that every time I read the word “ameliorate” I think of the sentence: “Nothing could ameliorate the ineptitude of Principal Skinner.”?

second half,
I follow the hawks pretty closely and I think alot of their problems right now are directly related to having arguably their two best forwards out in Toews and Hossa. This tailspin didn’t start until Toews went out, and he is probably their best face off man and all around center. With him out it really affects the power play, penalty kill, and everything. I think once Toews is back and Hossa comes back, they will have a pretty solid team and should be one of the top 4 in the western conference. I will say that the one problem they may have is goaltending, which is never good when you are supposed to be trying to win a cup.
BVEL
Me and my cousin were watching the Dallas v Philly games last night and were amazed to see that on just about every play that Philly wanted to bring pressure and harass Romo, they seemed to get through the blocking at will and take Romo down or force him to scramble. Now most will probably say they have better talent, which they do, but how can we send 8 guys in and NONE get to the QB? You know the Eagles are blitzing and most teams still cant pick it up…. Another word to the wise…if Cutler has to throw 40-45+ times per game, we will NOT win those games…guaranteed

Troy Aikman assessment of the Bears was on target. To take a defensive guy and try to turn him into a no 1 receiver is a slap in the face to great WR like Bolden, Johnson and Rice. Obviously, the Bears don’t have good players on offense and that due to poor building at the GM level. Angelo has failed to build a team around whoever played QB for this team since coming from Tampa Bay. Look at Orton and other players now that’s not playing for this sorry squad. Angelo primary and sole focus is building a defense that has been deteriorating since the Super Bowl. I’m sure Lovie has lost this team, but the organization have also lost the confidence of its players by not being committed to win. This epic failure also falls on the shoulders of VP Ted Phillips who bought into the mantra of the Bears having to be a defensive team in order to keep the ghost of SB 85, Mike Singletary, and Butkus alive in Chicago. The Bears character should be on what wins today, not stay stuck in the old ways of the past. — i.e. Circuit City. The Bears front office is the main cause of this mess that plays every Sunday (or Thursday).

Just wanted to give credit to the hosts on Saturday evening.
Jason was on talking college football, Bulls, Bears, and it was very entertaining.
And later I think it was Rock that continued with some great sports talk.
Some funny stuff about the Big Ten and Elizabeth Lambert.
Good sports radio without the hosts acting moronic, trying to be comedians or demeaning callers.
The linup here from 9-4 could stand to learn.

gochi.. no no no.. The hawks problems now and in the future will be because they have goaltending that sucks.
Hey anyone out there remember that old Johnny B song he used to play in the morning that had to polka like ring to it.. “The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck”
Sing it Scoreheads… dah dah dah

mee,
Right. I said one problem they may have is goaltending. The reason I said may is because they still have time to make a trade this year. I do agree though that Huet is not a goalie you win a championship with. You can get to the playoffs without great goaltending, but you won’t win it until you get great goal tending. The Detroit Red Wings in the early to mid 90’s are a perfect example of that, and so were the Colorado Avalanche before they traded for Patrick Roy.
The Pope of Chili Town
So does that mean Dan and Terry are nice to their callers from 4-6?

That game was one of the most depressing games I have seen from a Bears team (I didnt watch the Bengals impaling of the Bears). I think this is Tommie Harris’ way of saying he wants out, and the Bears should oblige.
One question: Does it seem like to any of your that Charles Tillman is playing on skates? He always seem to be off-balance when trying to cover/tackle/run/breathe/stand/exist.
Sidebar: The Seth & Alex Almost Live Comedy Show was one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever seen on tv. Watching people do their voice acting of cartoon characters makes me squeamish. Plus, even though I like the cartoon, that “comedy show” was too Family Guy-y.

Never thought we would see the Bears play a game worse then they did in Cincinnati, but you could make a pretty compelling case that they did yesterday. Arizona could’ve realistically scored 60-70 points if they decided to actually try to score in the second half. Anquan Boldin didn’t even play, and this was a home game. I know Lovie Smith isn’t going to be fired, but when you see not only the way they have come out and gotten destroyed 2 of the last 3 weeks it makes you wonder what goes on preparation wise. I know the players are bad, but he wanted to call the defense so the blame has to somewhat go to him too.
As for Tommie Harris I have no problem if he is suspended next week, and at this point I’m not sure I have a problem if they just cut him. This fast turning into a guy who not only isn’t helping the team anymore, but has been hurting them.
Crash Corrigan
Actually, the Bears are not that far away from becoming the New Orleans Saints. No, not the current version, but the early 70’s Archie Manning version, where the all pro QB spent his Sundays trying to overcome huge deficits, running for his life, and occasionally winning a game by himself. But mostly, getting the **** beat out of him on a losing team.
Likquid Swordz
The Bears are who we thought they were, and Arizona knew it and beat the p*ss out of them.
I think the Bears problem is that they think they can outsmart the rest of the league with what they do (i.e. drafting projects, play-calling, trades). Too bad there’s too much money tied up with the coach and GM to change that way of thinking.
BVEL
There are way too many holes that can be fixed with a trade here or there and the draft…. this is like a 3 year rebuilding project and during that time we WASTE Cutler….. congrats Bears on being @sshats!!!
CoachGreen
AZ crowned the Bears azs.

The Bears will beat San Francisco.
However, not optimistic about the two games after that.
Philly put on a great rush last night…look out !!

Good point BVEL.
We finally get a real quarterback and he doesn’t have much to work with.
Cutler may get tired of being surrounded by mediocrity and waiting for things to get better.
BVEL
Geez, if I was running for my life and throwing to ex-defensive players week in and week out, what’s the point…. I am sure it will get old if it hasn’t already…… On a separate note, if they had the BCS rankings in the NFL the bears would lose even more points due to the fact GB lost to TAMPA!!!! How bad is GB??? or that matter, how bad are we…… lord…… 6-10 or 7-9 here we come right?

Is it not ridiculous to discuss what the BEARS need to do to win without talking more, much more about Angelo’s abysmal draft history? Why even bother discussing the BEARS with their inferior talent thanks to this poor excuse for a GM that’s responsible for putting them in the position they’re in with his bizarre selections? Does anybody remember top (1st or 2nd round) picks like: Dan Bazuin, Michael Haynes, or Roe Williams? There’s nobody left from some of his **** drafts. Why don’t the SCORE guys talk more about this instead of giving Angelo a break on an issue that I would think should be important to most Chicago sports fans? I know he’s got a huge contract extension into infinity thanks to that other bum Ted Phillips, but BEAR fans still need to appreciate why we’ve got a team that can’t compete instead of trying to figure out how to put lipstick on a pig. STOP giving Angelo the free pass!

The Bears are 28th in rushing.

I’m usually not one to scream about Lovie, but did he have a plan for yesterdays game? His defense got blown out of the gates with the worst defensive effort I’ve seen from the Bears since 2 weeks ago. Then you start moving the ball in the 3rd quarter but you never ran a hurry-up offense and you let the clock bleed at the end of the quarter. Then it gets close in the 4th and you still wont run a hurry-up. And when the game is clearly out of hand you bring Cutler in to get hit at least 5 more times. What was that?

Is Jerry Angelo or Jim Hendry the worst GM in Chicago?

Will Zach and Lawrence still tell us that Tommie Harris is the key to the defense?
basketball fan…
Well thanks to the Bears ineptitude I am thankful they at least got me to the NBA season.
And has much as Terry wants to slam it, the Big Ten basketball season looks to be much more intriguing this year, and for the foreseeable future. Big Ten football, well that is a giant suckfest…..but Big Ten basketball made some strides last year as a conference, and this year should be the 2nd best behind the ACC in all of college basketball. It is pretty deep. Terry will mention how it never was like it used to be, well college basketball will never be like it used to be Terry due to the one and done rule. Teams that should be competitive or ranked most of the season are…..
MSU
OSU
Purdue
Illinois
Minnesota
Michigan
and you know that Wisconsin is always tough as well. Penn St, winner of the NIT last year, should be competing for a NCAA birth, and Northwestern should have a nice season as well.
Beverly Brewmaster
wheelingdad… don’t feed the troll!
Fast Freddie
The Bears are so quickly going in the wrong direction it’s sickening. How many starters on both sides of the ball would be starters on a good team? I can think one for sure, maybe three tops (Cutler for sure, maybe Forte and Olsen). On the defense I can think of three Urlacher, Briggs, and Tillman, and I’m not 100% sure Tillman is a starter on a very good team.
Other then that there isn’t one guy on the offensive or defensive lines from this team that would start on a good team, nor would any of the receivers. Lovie is so stubborn, he will never change the defense even though the league has figured out and the bears clearly lack the personnel to run it anymore. The Bears have no high draft picks this year so it’s all up to Angelo and free agency to fix this, and his track record with most of the free agents he brings in isn’t good at all.
Looking long term, I think you could argue the Bears are worse off then the Vikings, Packers, and even the Lions.
wheelingdad
Bev-Brew…I know your right, but was bored and couldn’t help myself this morning.

bears lines are terrible, O & D. there can’t be any improvements until the off-season. and we can’t draft any good linemen this year because we had to trade the picks for gaines adams, who hasn’t done anything yet. jay cutler still has giant men chasing him, and if he survives the season, it’ll be a miracle. forte is still bad too. what was the defensive coverage in the pass game yesterday? cover zero?! our corners were getting jerked around out there, larry fitz was destroying them. tommie harris needs to leave town, what the hell was he thinking out there, “must punch cardinal, giant man try to keep me from quarterback, fire & passion!”. the only good thing that came out of the game yesterday, greg olsen seemed to find himself again. and i don’t really know what sammy sosa is trying to do, hes getting really weird now. but i don’t think the bears are going to the playoffs this year, they don’t deserve to either, even if they did pull it together, they’ve lost to many tiebreaker games, and they’ll lose another one thursday, frank gore is going to run all over us, and we havn’t won out by the bay since ‘85. time to turn to the bulls and blackhawks everybody, hopefully those hawks and bulls can make the united center look good again like they did last year, unlike soldier field, that grass looks really terrible.
JimM
Part of me believes that Tommie Harris intended to get kicked out of the game. Considering his recent “supsension” by Lovie, seems to be a little payback – “I’ll do what I want, practice when I want, and play however I want.” At at least knew he’d draw 15 yards on a penalty when he started throwing punches like that. Didn’t he think someone would see him and know behavior like that would get him kicked out of the game? I don’t buy this “passion of the moment” **** or that someone cheap-shotted him. Harris cheapshotted his whole team because he obviously could care less I wouldn’t put it past him intending to get kicked out of game.
JD Powerless
Biggest problem the Bears have is they are getting older in too many positions and have absolutely nobody that is any good to come in and replacement. On the offensive line, Kreutz, Garza, Pace, I have no idea who the hell is going to come in and replace these guys. They suck as it is anyway. Chris Williams sure doesn’t look like anything. Same with the defensive line. They traded for this Gaines Adams and they may as well put him out there at this point.
BIZKIT
Bears fans need to give Cutler a break, sure we now know that Cutler is not a top 5 QB but I think those types of expectations in the first place where a bit unfair. He does need a good O-Line to perform at his absolute best but so do 95% of all other QB’s. Even Manning needs time in the pocket to be productive.
reality101
Bears fans, we need to get use to loosing because this will be going on for a long time. The bears are a terrible football team. if they finish 6-10 or 7-9, Lovie Smith will be fired. Jerry Angelo, and Ted Phillips will eat his $10 million to use him as a scapegoat to pacify fans. They will hire an unknown coach that will not cost much money, some one with ties to the 85 bears to make fans feel warm and toasty. Then the team will suck next year as they learn new systems.
The biggest problem I see is the disconnect between Angelo and Smith. If you remember when Jauron was fired, Angelo said there has to be a marriage between coach and gm, so they are on the same page. Angelo and Smith are clearly not on the same page. Smith’s staple, the Tampa 2 requires a dominant DT, a very good strong safety, and a sure tacking weak side line backer. They have the later with Briggs, but they have been lacking the other two key positions since the superbowl season. Angelo had no back up plan for Tommie Harris, who was coming off a MAJOR hamstring injury that year, or Mike Brown who had been injured every season. Smith can’t run his defense without those players, and the only thing Angelo has done was draft projects for these key positions. No free agents, no high draft picks.
Smith and his coaching staff is just as guilty. Good coaches adjust their schemes to the level of talent they have. They also have good staffs that get their players ready, and get the most of their talent. If you look at the top teams every year (New England, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, ect) they let free agents move on, and draft replacements to step right in. Bill Belichick even changes from 3-4 to 4-3 depending on the talent of his players. Smith’s stuborness, and inability to think outside the box is one of the reasons this team is so inconsistent.
This problem is not going away anytime soon.

I’ll be interested to hear what bear excuse maker/apologist zach zaidman has to say about this loss. I can hear him now. “I think you have to understand the Cardinals came in here extremely motivated off of their loss against Carolina at home, and they caught the Bears at a good time because the bears had that big win over cleveland the week before. It also really hurt the bears that Peanut Tillman and Al Afalava both got hurt yesterday. When you lose two guys in your secondary it’s tough on any team.” You have to love the fight the Bears showed in that 4th quarter to make that run and guys they had a real chance to win that football game. That really says something about this team. You have to love their chances going forward.”
He must bob on Lovie’s **** or something. The guy has zero credibibilty and is a total idiot.

Naper Rick, Zach and Lawrence can’t get any access to the players unless they kiss butt. Not only that but if there were no Bears, they would be unemployed.

here’s the sad thing, if harris was purely a knucklehead who punched some player, we could yell, get rid of him and get maybe our second round pick back. but harris isn’t that, he;’s an overpaid knucklehead clearly on the decline. trading him would be counter productive. what ya going to get for him, a 4, maybe a six? Angelo needs to change his we reward our own philosophy a bit. He sat until the 5th week of the season to use the 20 mil he had sitting around doing nothing(the cutler extension). How many different reciever options could have been. Ya knwo what i wish was a tradeable commodity, cap space. I will trade you my 14 mil in cap space for larry fitzgerald or something like that. Use cap space like a draft pick. do an NBA style sign and trade and get something worthwhile here. This offseason(and yes, it’s worth starting talking about it now) is going to be very interesting. we need to find a way to dump bad talent, get draft picks, sign good talent and build around our QB. Finding a new GM and coach might be on the list as well. Ted Phillips, get your vacation in soon because this could be a very busy off season for ya.

bigtime
You are right about Angelo’s philosophy is flawed. The bears are paying high salaries to Tommie Harris, Nathan Vasher, and Brian Urlacher. None of the three have done much since signing their extensions.
The trading cap space won’t work in the nfl because the contracts are not guaranteed. Larry Fitzgerald is worth every penny he makes, when the time comes that he is no longer worth it, they will just cut him. Cap space is not a factor to most teams in the nfl.

I remember growing up watching the beloved since the mid to late 70’s. As a child, I used to get up early sunday morning and watched the Neil armstrong show with Johnny and jeannie morris, and then I would watch the NFL today show on snowy channel two(with good ole brent musberger) knowing kickoff is now just a half hour away………and then i watched Payton right, payton left, up the middle and over the top. He was the only player worth watching for nearly a decade.
I used to live and die with those teams; this was all I knew. Never knew back then, why dallas, pittsburgh, and other teams were so much better than MY team.
Now that i am older and familiar with the concept of business, I am now able to separate common sense from that kid that blindly followed My team in that familiar uniform. it still took the performances in the last two losses( worse defensively I have ever seen) to wake me up to what the real problem is.
you can fire the coach, change the players, but the real bottom line is simply that it is Organizational.
you can’t change ownership or their philosophy..

Switching gears a bit… The Blackhawks will have a tough test tonight against the Kings. That top line with Kopitar and Smith is one of the best in the league. It’ll be good to have Eager and Toews back and playing full tilt. Hopefully they can knock the rust off fairly quick and contribute. I watched the game against Colorado the other night and I thought it was a really entertaining game. Saw a lot of positives in that game playing in the thin air. I didn’t like them getting the lead and then coughing up a couple of goals but other than a few bad shifts here and there I thought they moved the puck well and played a good physical game. Niemi looked good in net. Hopefully they’ll use the home ice advantage to the fullest tonight and come out with 2 points.
General Soreness
I hate to say it….but we are stuck with Ted, Lovie and Jerry for a while. The only way we can get rid of them is if the McCaskeys sell the team to an owner who truely wants to win. I foresee some dark years ahead for this franchise. At least the next 3-5.

800……Kopitar is the goods….. an absolute beast this year, and don’t look now but the Kings are 10-5-2, not bad for a team who is coming off 79 and 72 point campaigns. I know the Kings were a pain to us last year, and I can assure you they will be this year…. Toews and Eager back is a plus no doubt. It was disheartening Saturday watching them give up 2 shorty’s (even though one wasn’t, but still…..)
Did anyone watch the Strikeforce MMA card from Saturday night….. a very well fought card to show the national public. Very skilled and hard fought matches, good job strikeforce. Hopefully they can be the TNA to UFC’s WWE….. we’ll see.

Hunter Hillenmeyer is probably the most thoughtful and well-spoken member of the Bears, but if he is willing to say the things he said today on the record, can you imagine what is being said by these players among themselves. I feel for him, but the reality is this defense was heading downhill for the final half-dozen games of their Super Bowl year, and not a single impact player has been added to that defense since. That’s 3-plus years, a lifetime in the NFL.

“Bring back Da Coach!”
yeah. we’ll sign him to a 1 yr deal to play TE, he’ll play with an old school leather helmet
I would pay good money to see that
big time sucker(formely MABT)
thanks for the research and list david from west side, well done!!! IF coaching staff retained, i vote for kampman as dlineman signed. if new coaching staff with a predominance towards 3/4 pay TOP dollar for dumerville. I like otawgwe linebackers probably will have to be the bastardd step child because other needs like oline-dline and wr are more pressing. i would pay top dollar for marshall but not for breaston. his numbers are due to guarenteed 1 on 1 slot matchups due to boldin and fitzgerald. you don’t know what he can do against a shut down corner becuase he will never see one as a member of the cardinals. the bears really blew an opportunity a year or 2 ago when the one guy everyone was drooling over, fanica, was ignored by our inept gm. i don’t know if above mentioned names will fix our problems or not

I think Terry would make a great fireman, and an even better Walmart Greeter!!!

so what’s it like being trapped in a 2 dimmensional square floating through space? it must have really sucked when non farted. i would want out just for that. i mean, the scenery must have been pretty for a while. and didn’t you get to see krypton blow up? actually you ungrateful jerk, you would be dead if it weren’t for my dad. i don’t even know why he sent you to begin with. he knew the planet was going to blow up. if they just suspended your court date a few weeks, it wouldn’t have even been considered a death penalty which is forbidden on krypton. so on second thought, s crew you, i ain’t kneeling to your dumb a ss
SPAULDING!
Bernard Berrion, WR
Positives: fast, can catch the ball, get open on a deep route, decent wide receiver
negative: can’t block (ugh?), not Jerry Rice, not Steve Smith (ugh?), not perfect
Tommy Harris, LT
Positives: can run the “three technique” (ugh?), is the set piece of an ultra high maintenance defensive package, needs to be double teamed. Impossible to replace (ugh?)
Negatives: is crazy. All of his talent relies on near perfection or perfect speed.
If you’re Jerry Angelo, which do you over pay for?
big time sucker(formely MABT)
going to have to disagree with you there spaulding, i wouldn’t have overpaid for berrian. angelo has a hardon for d tackles with talent so that didn’t suprise me either

Viva la Kyle Ortman
SPAULDING!
yep, B.T.S.
I’m not sure what Berrion’s ceiling was/ is, but Angelo then went on to spend more money on Marc Bradley.
The Bears management is ignoring the “negatives.”
Harris seem the obvious lynch pin, but there were warning signs last year.
It’s a shame.
zod
why do you say this to me? when you know I will k ill you for it
zod
suspended my court date…(lol) that was a good one “son”
