Cutler Reckless In Ugly Defeat

Forget about everything that went wrong on Thursday night.  With 12 days before the next game, we have plenty of time to dissect:  A running game that doesn’t work, Olin Kreutz being incapable of snapping out of the gun, continued undisciplined play, penalties and  a shuffling of the deck chairs on the Offensive Line.

For now, let’s focus on one thing…Jay Cutler.  You can take away the 3 picks he made in the middle of the field if you want.  Blame them on the receivers.  Blame them 0n the field conditions.  Hell, even blame them on the officials.  What you can’t take away are Cutler’s mistakes in the red zone.  So far he has 5 interceptions inside the 20 and both picks on Thursday were awful.  Even if Aburayo Franklin hadn’t of dropped into coverage, this would’ve been a bad idea.  Kellen Davis was double covered.  Cutler forced it in a situation where the Bears would’ve been happy to take the 3 points.

The pick at the end of the game was terrible too.  Let’s be real, Cutler scrambled, knew the clock was winding down and panicked.  Again he would rather make the hard play instead of tossing the ball aside.  Yes, time was of the essence, but there was another down and another second to play with.

Cutler was heralded as a play maker and I haven’t given up on his talent yet, but he takes a lot of unnecessary risks.  So far, Cutler at the end of games has been a disappointment, especially on the road.  Away from Soldier Field, Cutler has 15 INT.  The Bears have lost 4 out 5 games on the road, partly because of his recklessness.

Now he has 17 INT on the season.  Going forward (at least in 09) it’s going to be very hard for any Bears fan, at this point, to trust him with the game on the line.

Hate to disagree with u, but I cannot. Jay is just awful right now. I know the line sux, run game, blows, yadda yadda, but what he does in crucial situations under the bright lights is HORRIBLE. He’s choking. Orton has none of the talents Cutler possesses, but he would never be this reckless. I think we have the wrong quarterback.

Lawrence you hit it right on the head, the only issue I have is that i’m sick of his arrogant attitude when he does make the mistakes, the fact is that maybe he’s not as good as we think I want him to succeed but even Henry Burris didn’t throw that many ints in a season!

Denver wanted to upgrade the qb position? McDaniels want Matt freakin Cassell…he settled for Orton an d now people are already clamoring for Chrissy Sims because the team can’t score points unless there are miracle tips or plenty of special teams touchdowns. Unless their defense plays like the bears from 05-06 don’t be surprised if the Chargers chase down the broncos like they always do.

Everybody is going to be a quarterback expert for the next 12 days…ugh..Ron turner could do Cutler a favor by calling for jump balls instead of inside pass plays at the goal line..or a novel idea on first and goal from the 3 – actually getting 3 yards for he score on a rush…Cutler saved the bears *** by working the team down the field…nice late hit on Chris Williams that could have killed the drive..Cutler forced it Olsen because that’s all he has confidence in…closer to the goal line teams man up the short and slight hester/knox combo and blow them off the ball…then all they have to do is blanket Olsen and they know the bears are done.

So….. how do the bears do again against a good team? Anyone thinks the eagles will not be coming to decimate the bears? The eagles game now has potential to be uglier than the bengals and cardinals games COMBINED!

We all saw on that last play sheer panic in cutler trying to make that play, I still do not understand for the life of me why he simply did not continue running?

All last week you media sports guys ranted “if they do not beat the 49ers the season is over” what do I hear this morning? “We have time to right the ship” huh?

The entire team has given up, cutlers lackadaisical stinking attitude is why no one seems to like him and that “prima donna” stigma he had at denver is born again here.

“He will take us to the playoffs”

You writers/media pundits want to take that back?

I agree Laurence that Cutler made bad decisions but after listening to the entire show of Doug and O.B. via podcast-last night I could only muster about 45 minutes, and taking them, you about your bad quarterback theory (I agreed), and the callers I’ll say this. The Bears think, or thought they were better than they are. They thought getting Cutler was maybe the final or near the final piece of the puzzle. That has proven not to be the case with our players and schemes used. To me as an outsider looking in I saw Cutler forcing the ball like he was told to. Go to #82. Go to #23 even though at least a few times other receivers were open underneath. There are a lot to blame but as it has been said before Turner just is too stubborn or is it Lovie? Fans look, every and I mean every play Cutler is running for his life or the play is disrupted before it ever happens! We need a MINIMUM OF 3-5 deep patterns per game. We get one or two. O line or scheme? I never expected this-not this bad! Our receivers that are on the field now are NOT collectively good enough to help this team and Cutler and the O line makes it worse. Lawrence, I don’t understand why anyone isn’t analyzing the personnel package he had on the goal line. 2 runs right up the middle and then a pass? It’s what everyone expects of this team on the goal line. But it is inexcusable to have McKie and Shaeffer out there, especially when neither of the 2 will be reliable pass catchers. Why was Olsen out of the game for that down? Don’t they usually employ a 3 tight end set and get the score to one of the ends out of that?

Ron Truner needs to go. It’s his ineptness as an offensive and redzone play caller that’s costing Jay and this team.

If I were Lovie……

I would be telling cutler in the locker room…..

Lovie: “Look Jay my whole coaching staff is taking a beating from the entire Chicago fan base and the media, I have to make a decision to turn this season around. We will be letting Caleb take lots of snaps in our practices and I just may start him in the first quarter of the eagles game?”

Shake his *** up!

Listen to Tom Thayer on AM radio while watching the game. He was spot-on describing Bears receivers and how they don’t finish routes and/or improvise when QB is in trouble. On the running side, how Forte is not running with his line, spotting a gap then moving through it. Numerous times he countered the line’s movement. The O-line is average but they do create holes and 3.5 yds/carry equal lots of first downs.

Armchair QB time…try to throw, on the run and ready to get smashed, to a receiver who is 5’5” then, on the next down, same situation, throw to the guy who is 6’5”! The sweet spots are all over the place. Do you have time to check the first receiver running into coverage, pick a secondary target, think about who he is, throw low or high, hope he does not stop his route…too late, you have just been smashed by a 300 pound mean-fast-strong-quarterback-eating man! That’s a 300-pounder with geeeeze.

Culter may have a QB rating of 45 but his Kill-Ratio (Call to Duty) is 1-5 (1-pass completion to 5-just got killed by a 300 pounder wearing the other jersey) Yikes. When things are not working…change the plan.

LoHo, it’s very, very frustrating to continue watching this offense constantly shoot themselves in the foot. It’s not just Jay Cutler and all the interceptions away from Soldier Field, but the countless penalties, the continuing lack of a running game and an offensive line that can’t run or pass block properly. This offense needs a complete makeover, starting with a completely new offensive line, an upgrade at receivers and possibly a replacement for a guy in Matt Forte that looks tired & overworked after only 1 year running the football. Things are so bad for this team right now, that team could be lucky to win 2, maybe 3 games the rest of the way, and they won’t get much help in the draft…

It’s apparent players have issues sure and some are just not very good. However……. the major issues are with the coaching staff as they are neither creative to design new plays based on team and player strengths nor are they teachers who can mold raw talent and enhance skill sets vets have. To further complicate matters i believe the coaching staff has either ignored or is inept at stressing basic football fundamentals I.E. Tackling. Hitting a guy with your shoulder is NOT a tackle ! Wrapping your arms around his LEGS is !

Yes, Jay Cutler plays a major role in the teams loses this year, possibly the biggest role, but he is by far our best offensive player, and most talented! I for one am glad we traded for him. The NFL is relatively close competitively, allowing any team a possibility to win on any given week. Teams turn around after one season every year. However, you’ve got to have good coaches that run effective schemes against the teams that you’re playing and take advantages of the mismatches week in and week out. We don’t do that! We won in 05 because Coach Smith, and really “Chico” Rivera, was running a great scheme for the defensive personel that we had giving us a top 5 defense those years. We lost in 2005 due to eventual injuries on D, and not having the ability to pick up the slack on O. Now we have a vanilla coach in Ron Turner, “Captain Obvious”, who isn’t able to capitalize on what talents we do have. Our defense has injuries, is aging, and Lovie isn’t changing the schemes enough with the personel we have to succeed. Pressuring the QB! and mixing up coverage is the name of the game on defense, and working the mismatches equats to success on offense(ex. Larry Fitz last week). How else is it possible that New England continues to remain a powerhouse year after year! They draft well: Height, Power, and Speed guys that are Tough Mindend and FIT THE SCHEME. Many of their players are average or no-names, but they fit the scheme. Winning teams surround their best players with talent and give them freedom to succeed(ex. Manning).
We aren’t as bad as we look now, but it’s written all over our faces…we’re done for this season. Unfortunately, we don’t have any draft picks to look forward to, which is a shame because its a great draft for SAFETYS and WIDE REC.’s. Personally, I hope we make a splash in Free Agency, or trades. I wish we would have used our second round pick for Braylon Edwards, instead of Gaines Adams. (He better be good).
I love me some Lovie, but I’m starting to think that we need to pursue Mike Shanahan. At least we would have an offensive guru who could guide Cutler through the prime of his carrier. We’d also go to a zone blocking scheme and have an O-line that always has a 1,000 yard rusher and not some line that allows rushers in the backfield on every down.
If I was running the team this year, I’d blitz more on D and use our propensity for creating turnovers to force the QB into mistakes. I’m talking like crazy blitzes, frequently with zone coverage. Our whole D-line should be tired after every game. That’s our deepest position and most talented(with Urlacher and Pisa hurt). On Offense I’d throw hitches, and bombs. Hester, Olsen, and Knox! I’d play Kellen Davis more, and give me some Aromeshadeu?! What’s to lose, Cutler and the coaches bragged him up in the preseason, but we aren’t playing him because Knox is okay. What the ****, He seems to be a talented BIG receiver, we won’t know until we play him! Run more screens to Forte cause our line stinks, and force Kruetz to practice more shotgun. Run some Philly style O, whatever. Either max protect bombs, or open the field up and let Cutler throw. Anyways..Thanks for letting me rant. (sorry for some misspellings)

Sup Holmes? I have to disagree on some of your comments, although I understand your thoughts.

Here are my thoughts:

Cutler is not the Bears problem here. Everyone that says that the Bears are bad because of him, and that they wish that the Bears still had Orton should take themselves out back to the woodshed and kick their own ***.

Sure Cutler had a bad game, and has had a handful of bad games for the Bears, but HE IS RUNNING FOR HIS LIFE! He is probably sick of getting his *** kicked every damn play. Sure he has tried to make too much happen and made some bad decisions, but he knows that if he doesn’t take things upon him self they will lose. BECAUSE HE KNOWS THEY SUCK. Sure it’s fair to say that he has to clean that up, and not try to be a hero, but don’t expect any wins that way. Hell, he still gave us a chance to win at the end when we probably had no business being in that game.

Here are the issues in my mind:

The Bears are the most undisciplined team in recent Memory. (Bears wise) Silly penalties, players not knowing where to line up, Players not knowing what their blocking assignments are. (Funny that Schaffer came in and asked Beekman and Olsen how to block. I wonder what their response was…”Uh…I have no idea”) ha ha
Receivers not finishing routes, not knowing what their routes are, or not knowing the “hot” routes on blitzes.
This is a direct reflection on the coaching staff. They cannot get this team to perform at any decent level (comparative to their talent level) and something needs to be done. Hell even our special teams is not playing up to the level that we usually expect. Taking crazy penalties, turning the ball over…and now we can’t get a return to the 20 yard line.

The Bears have no running game. Teams can load up on the pass, because they know they don’t have to respect the sorry *** Bears running attack. Saying “we will let Cutler try to beat us, which will be tough since they have no weapons for him to go to” This has some to do with our horrible line, and some to do with Forte’s indecisiveness. He doesn’t seem like he knows where to run to hit the open holes.
This causes issues because the Bears have no way to keep defenses off-balance, and honest. We can’t run play action since they know that our runs wont amount to much and Turner isn’t some sort of magician to come up with magical plays to confuse defenses. He is more of a conventional offensive coordinator. I do still feel that the coaches could come up with a better offensive game plan. Calling a delayed hand off in the middle of the field on 3rd and 12 isn’t a great call in my opinion.

I hope that you guys can reflect and comment on my statements.

Bears Fan Leo in Arlington Heights.

Thank you for a great show!

All I have to say is 52 pass attempts. 52. How many QB’s win a game with that many thrown. I guess your right Laurence. Green Bay his fault. Bears were up at the end of the game and there was blown coverage. Damn that Cutler for not being there. ATL game tying drive and Pace moves. Damn that Cutler for not grabbing that guys waist and holding him in place. Or giving Forte Stick em to stop fumbling. Cincy and ARZ damn Cutler for not being in the right spot on Defense. I will not say Cutler was not at fault during the SF game, but damn is he the only QB to ever have a bad game. Red zone INT’s kinda hard not to have when a team cant punch the ball in one the 1. If I recall Peyton had 5 int a few years back. Farve, lets not even go there. He throws them like there going out of style. ^ in a playoff game against ST. Louis. I think everyone needs to relax. And by the way the big offensive juggernaut known as Orton. 10 points in 8 quarters of football.

Larry you know man I love you but I just can’t agree with you here. Cutler is the only “leader” on this team I saw yesterday get up in front of the camera and accept responsibility for the teams failures. What did Lovie say? The team wasn’t motivated? WTF. Can someone please tell me who on a team is responsible for getting a team motivated. I thought it was the coaches – I must have been wrong.

And I have to point out something else. Before Cedric Benson was released by the Bears, he was diagnosed with Celiac Disease which is a pretty serious digestive disorder. A lot of what folks were complaining about about Benson are symptoms of this disease, And it’s easily treated with a gluten free diet. ANGELO AND SMITH knew this before Benson was released. They knew this and released him anyway and now he’s shining with the Bengals, Oh let’s add Thomas Jones to that who is going for yet another 1000 plus yard season. It’s called incompetent front office personnel.

And why are players gradually speaking out now about how players Smith and Angelo delibarately let go are now missed. Briggs’s comments told me a lot and to me were a direct hit to both these guys. Brown, Chris Harris, Thomas Jones, John Tait, Bernard Berrian, and yes Ron Rivera all released-let go and their replacements – in effectives. Explain to me the Chris Williams scenario also. Every other fecking team out there said the guy had a back problem but the Bears knew better. Oh and what happened. Williams is out a whole season for Back surgery.

I am really kind of tired how every years with this team the QB is the problem. Every year for the past 20 years when there are failures, it;s the QB. I;m tired of it to be honest. The front office and coaching is the problem. That’s not to say some of the players aren’t but let’s lose Phillips, Angela, Smith and that gravey train and hire new leadership.
