Boers and Bernstein Show - Written by Bernstein on Friday, November 13, 2009 8:28 - 437 Comments

Friday at Harry’s of Arlington

Harry’s of Arlington is the perfect place to be this afternoon, if, say, you want to forget last night entirely.  Maybe Jay Cutler wants to stop by for a few Bud Lights on the “Who Needs Two?” Tavern Tour, where we will be giving away Bulls tickets.  1 N. Vail Street in downtown Arlington Heights is where you will find us.

Cutler was plain bad.  Interceptions of every variety — some mitigated, some not (the first one in particular.  Blech.), were the primary reason why the Bears could not win a terrible game against a weak opponent.  This was only nominally NFL football, with both teams committing dumb penalties and generally flopping around.

The Bears have been asking Cutler to walk a tightrope for most of the season, and it is in these night games he seems to fall to his doom like Karl Wallenda in Puerto Rico.

The defense was competent, executing the gameplan we discussed yesterday:  limiting Frank Gore, tackling well, and daring Alex Smith to beat them.  But the Bears’ lack of run-blocking necessitates downfield passing, and Cutler, often pressured, couldn’t make the right throws at the right times.

Other observations:   Was Orlando Pace benched in favor of Kevin Shaffer late in the game?  Does it matter?…the NFL Network sure loves to show Bob Babich, for some bizarre reason.  I think they thought he was somebody else, or that he has actual responsibility…Olin Kreutz is a terrible shotgun snapper…the Bears are better at blocking screen passes than they have been in a while…Tommie Harris does make a difference when he plays that hard.

No excuses today for the great Jesus H. Cutler? How refreshing. I don’t think it’s so hard to understand now why the Broncos were willing to part with him. In the most recent Sporting News player poll – in which 100 players were asked who the most overrated player was, Jay Cutler received the most votes of any other QB in the league. Tough to argue that on a day like today.

Cutler looks pissed and he looks like he’s already tired of being here. Wait till next year. Things are only going to get worse. No draft picks, Jerry Angelo in charge of signing guys to improve this team, Cutler may try to get himself traded out of here by this time next year.

You think Bernsie gets jollies for making people Wiki “Karl Wallenda”? It was before my time, and while I’d heard of the “Flying Wallendas”, I had no point of reference.

So much for my I hope the Bears season is better and they stay relevant longer then the Cubs did this year. Yesterday was the equivalent of the Cub game in San Diego where Gregg gave up the 4 runs with 2 out and nobody on to lose. A terrible loss to a team they should’ve beat, and regardless of what the standings may say… you knew/know the season is over and this team has no shot. At this point are we better off this season spirals out of control and there are more blowout like AZ and CIN with the hope Lovie and Jerry could be fired? Realistically if they keep playing like they have the last month, it’s possible the only game they win the rest of the year is against St. Louis.

Chet’s Inflated Ego
Nov 13, 2009 9:26

Now that I think about the pick, I remember the analysis at the time of the trade was, “who cares about the pick, Jerry can’t pick his nose no less draft-picks.” Some ringing endorsement of a GM, huh? We are saying that he can’t perform one of his most important job functions.

I’m with you the Hawks are the only hope in Chicago right now.

I think it’s funny that Bernstein still wont even mention the best team in Chicago this year on this blog. I dont know if he does on the air since I dont listen past the transition but I’m sure if they do it’s very limited. I still can’t believe Bernstein ripped on Bobby Hull, what a jerk off. I listened to the transition a few days ago and Dan McNeil asked B&B to the Hawks game on Sunday and I loved hearing these two morons squirm and try to find an excuse not to go. We all know why, they are scared that if they go they will be taunted and have to leave because of the things they said about the game, fans and players.

LET’S GO HAWKS!!!!!!

mockeylock
Nov 13, 2009 9:36

Amen Skater Rich. The Blackhawks ARE the best thing going in this town by far. I don’t care if Dan and Terry don’t want to admit it, or would rather make fun of the sport and the fans than have a real discussion about the team or the games.

Chet’s Inflated Ego
Nov 13, 2009 9:36

Bernstein ripps Dan McNeil for talking to BOBBY HULL? Why? How pathetic is that?

B&B can never go back on the garbage they talked about hocky, hockey fans or hockey players and they know it.

I think it’s awesome they cant mention the best ticket in town because thier big mouths messed it all up. Hockey fans never forget and we will always tear down B&B if they try to act like those things were never said.

Chet’s Inflated Ego
Nov 13, 2009 9:44

Again, the analysis was that Jerry can’t pick good first-rounders anyway (unless he is selecting a RB for the Bengals), so no down-side.

mockeylock
Nov 13, 2009 9:52

Just because Angelo sucks at drafting in the early rounds doesn’t mean we need to accept it. So to say, ‘well, he would’ve botched those picks anyways’ ….it’s acceptable to me at all. You’ll never build a championship contending team if you can’t draft in the early rounds. So either the Bears live with that fact, or they do something about it. But giving away high picks because you think the GM will screw them up is absolutely rediculous.

Chet’s Inflated Ego

Skater.. did you just figure out the jerk off comment or have you know that for a while? And case in point im told we had at least 45 minutes of Dan as usual thinking you want to hear his Hubie Brown impersonation. Lest face it. IF (caps bold) there was a parade down Madison with a Silver cup i guarantee well still be hearing about post up moves in regards to mediocre basketball which MAY be the Bull. Hes a fish out of water with hockey. He knows it, we know it. Dan doesnt get his ego infusion everyday unless he can sound like know it all on something or belittle someone. I see the original concept of the score which was fans talking about sports with other fans is a silly concept to him.

You know else is frustrating, you have to look at the free agent list for 2010 and there’s really nothing there to fix the offensive line. The receivers are Brandon Marshall (who I’m not sure if he’s a restricted free agent) and Vincent Jackson who is not a blue-chipper but pretty good.

At the beginning of the season, I would have said no to landing Marshall but I think it’s now worth the risk even though he’s a really bad guy.

I admit I dont like the shootout in hockey but what can you do, I mean its a lot more physical the baseball and basketball with a lot of back-to-back games (especially this year). If these guys go on for 12 hours like games in the past they will be useless the next day or even week. If you remember games that dont get over early in the first period of over time usually last forever. It is unfair in regards to total points for a season but it is fair to the players. I’ll take the shootout in the regular season and let them duke it out in the playoffs. I’m sure the venues had some say in that matter as well since a lot of them are shared with other activities that need a lot of time to prepare and set-up.

I like the shootout during the regular season. It gives teams more motivation to try and score especially when its 4 on 4 for 5 minutes. When the shootout wasn’t there it seems like teams would be “happy” just taking the 1 point and getting out of there. At least there is a guaranteed 2 points every night now.

I LOVE overtime hockey during playoffs time. I remember watching the Calgary/Red Wings series back in 2004. It was a late game in Calgary that went to like 2 OT’s and we were warned 3 times by the RA to keep the noise down (4 of us were watching). We even had the RA from the floor below and come up and insist we stop stomping on the ground….HAHAHAHAHA

Skater Rich
Nov 13, 2009 10:23

The tie was just one thing the NHL thought was killing the sports fan base. It was horrible seeing a 0-0 game or 1-1. I think it gives fans something to look forward to after a game that lacked luster on offense. It’s not traditional but the NHL had to do a lot of things to get fans back, seems like they are on the right track so I dont think it’s going anywhere.

Sorry I misunderstood, I thought you meant to keep going into overtime in lieu of the shootout.

It’s pretty clear now that Rex Grossman, and Kyle Orton were not the reason the Bears never used the shotgun formation. Simply put, Olin Kreutz cant snap the ball in shotgun. One out of every three snaps he makes in that formation is delievered low, around Cutler’s ankles. Once the QB has to stoop down to grab the snap, the entire rythym of the play is lost, and completely defeats the purpose of being in the shotgun in the first place. I guess the coaching staff was hiding Kreutz’ lack of ability in this formation all these years all the while the fans were ripping the QB and Off. coordinator.

Guys, after that latest ugly loss in San Francisco, this Bears team is in disarray and not very good! It didn’t look like either team was that interested in winning the game last night in San Francisco, and the two teams were as sloppy as NFL Network’s glitch-filled broadcast that also featured NO ANNOUNCERS for the first couple of series following the opening kickoff. I betcha NBC Sports’ Chairman **** Ebersol is regretting his network’s decision to keep the Bears’ home game vs. the Eagles next Sunday night after that piece of (CENSORED)… I know the Bears have 7 games left, and things are so inept with this team following their bye week in Week 4, I don’t know if they have 2, maybe 3 more wins at most the rest of the way! To make matters worse, guys, I don’t think it’ll be fixed anytime soon either. The Bears need a complete facelift of their offensive line, a complete upgrade of their inept receiving corp and yes, another go-to running back to complement Jay Cutler, in spite of his 5 INT disaster last night.

another year, and everyone wants to blame the QB for everything once again.

RON TURNER SUCKS! Bernsie. Everything he touches turns to ****. I am not going to sit here and blame the QB once again, year after year. Turner is possibly the worst coordinator with a good Qb in the history of the game. How about those sequence of plays before the first INT in the endzone? 1st and 2nd down he runs up the middle for nothing, which sets up an obvious 3rd down goalline pass. They never try to bootleg him out EVER, they didn’t try to throw it more than one time in that sequence down there. So on the one attempt Cutler tries to force something that isn’t there once again, but he isn’t SET UP to succeed. Same **** every damn year. I hate this f’n team, organization, franchise. Bernstein continues to protect Turner IMO is silly and worthless, the guy sucks.

Nov 13, 2009 14:19

I think there is little doubt that Cutler is a good QB, better then Orton, and a guy that you can build your franchise around. While I definitely think he needs some guys that would actually qualify as NFL receivers or o-lineman, the one thing he HAS to do is stop throwing INT in the red zone. The past two years he leads the NFL in that stat. That first INT was huge. The Bears score a TD or even a FG that game is probably a win.

Even if cutler did throw a td on that final drive and the bears won the game last night, would anyone really feel that different about them then we do today?

I know I wouldn’t. Ok so they are 5-4 instead of 4-5. Either way we can all see they aren’t a playoff team, and overall their arrow is pointing straight down. The defense can only turn in a good performance like last night when they are facing a qb that wouldn’t even be a starter on 90% of the other nfl teams. Offensively, the line is old, and bad and there are no suitable replacements that looks to be ready to step in. The wrs would be mostly number 3 on a team with a real offense. The entire team is extremely undisciplined with the penalties on both sides of the ball, and we have a gm that can’t evaluate talent either through the draft or free agents.

Did anyone else hear the call to Zach’s show yesterday around 2:00? As a perfect epitome of the backward-thinking Bears fan, this mental titan said that he’d prefer the Bears hang on to the picks they dealt for Cutler, but only so they could trade them for middle-round picks that would be used to draft offensive linemen. Is there a mobile-phone app that could cause such callers to explode? Can you invent one? That’d be great for all involved. (4/6/2009)

Sure, the deal to send Mark DeRosa to Cleveland for pitching prospects may enhance the chances of landing Jake Peavy from San Diego, but that does not appear to be the reason for the trade. The Cubs, it seems, just don’t think as highly of him as everyone else, and he had enough value to bring some quality in return as they tried to find a place for a lefty bat. (1/5/09))
