HGH Scandal?
The New York Times reports today that a Canadian doctor who treated Tiger Woods and others is under criminal investigation in the US, suspected of providing athletes with performance-enhancing drugs.
Dr. Anthony Galea was arrested at the US/Canadian border in Toronto in October for possessing HGH and a calf’s-blood extract called Actovegin. The FBI and RCMP are cooperating in the efforts to determine if Galea provided more to elite athletes than the recovery-accelerating surgeries and blood-spinning therapies for which he is known.
His patients are said to include athletes across professional sports and Olympic medalists in Canada and the US.
There have been raised eyebrows over Tiger’s post-knee-injury physique, and this will fuel speculation. I am not surprised to see that seemingly-ageless swimmer Dara Torres (with her baseball-player jawline and unlikely body) has been treated by Galea.
We’ll examine all the angles of this blockbuster this afternoon, and we have our regular lineup of Tuesday football experts. Gerry DiNardo discusses colleges at 3:00, as we look at Notre Dame’s coaching choice and the Heisman outcome. Hub Arkush talks Bears and the NFL at 5:00.
With Mike Cameron signing in Boston (to play left field), the Cubs’ choices for center dwindle to Marlon Byrd and…not much else. National writers keep mentioning Scott Podsednik as a CF, apparently because they have never seen him play there.
Kobe Bryant has a broken finger and is recovering from a stomach ailment that necessitated two IVs. Still, he is expected to face the Bulls at the UC tonight, where Derrick Rose will look to assert himself within (outside?) the framework of the Bulls’ clunky offense.
Quote of the Year Show is tomorrow, and Friday’s stop on the Bud Light “Who Needs Two?” Taven Tour is Morrison Roadhouse on Harlem in Niles.

Chet’s Inflated Ego
I just read/skimmed Mary Mitchell’s column on Tiger.
Is there some sort of Cosmic Refund Department at which I can get my two minutes back?
George Oscar Bluth
I’ve been casually mentioning to friends over the last couple weeks that if Tiger is THIS completely different than the guy who was marketed by corporations as the Second Coming, there is a lot more out there besides ******. And poof!, here it comes.
Chet’s Inflated Ego
Any number of people have speculated that him being so cut might be more than the product of hard-work. The Dana Torres angle is just icing on the cake.
big time sucker(formely MABT)
i like the story about the hos. i mean, in all ways it’s a game of how low can you go. One i won’t touch, apparently tiger and whomever went low early and often. The totum poll gets lower and lower with tiger. Sweedish Model/opair on top. Hot successful business women. Cocktail waitress/swimsuit model next. Po rn stars next ending up with call girls. I mean he hit every level except pudgy housewife, and they all seemed to come out in succession to their spot on the trash totem poll. fascinating stuff. the HGH, now exposes his athleticism as a fraud. interesting. I think there is a lesson here though that probably places me back to the 15th/16th centruy but it’s in my heart so i will share it anyways. The first commandment
I am the Lord your God, Do not have any other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
i know it’s archaic but it fits
big time sucker(formely MABT)
he and most other celebrities that cross the line between famous and false idols get what they deserve
meesohawnee
well one thing is for sure. I would appear tiger may be morphing into a microcosm of American Society. How many adjectives can we start with?
Who am I
great now we have a bunch of holly rollers on this blog
George Oscar Bluth
That crappy Bible quote is wrought with delicious hypocrisy.
big time sucker(formely MABT)
i do put bells of holly in my house, and i do go to church so i am a bit holy, and i am a bit over weight so iam kinda rolly, but a holy roller, nahhhhhhhhh but you think about it, truely think about the celebrities that fall, Mel Gibson, Britney Spears, Tiger Woods to name a few. Mel makes the passion movie, everybody loves him, the catholic church makes him a hero, next thing you knwo, he is out philandering with young women and bars and spewing hate speach in a drunken tirade. False idol. Britney Spears had legions of young women and even young men(remember the LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE guy) who idolized her. Posters, dolls, books, cd’s, movies, magazines, impersonators. People thought Britney like had the key to life. Next thing you know, Justin dumps her, Kevin Federline, ****** behavior, treats kids in risky way, shaved head, breakdown. in other words, false idol exposed. Tiger, the epidimy of perfection. greatest golfer of all time. family man. 60 minutes interviews. Every time he played ratings jumped like 80 percent. biggest endorser of all time. now, false idol. Marilyn Monroe can be put in here, OJ simpson, kinda, and hundreds more. I am just saying we create false idols and they all fall. Even MJeff paid a price, his dad, for being the most famous man on earth. I find it interesting that we even think of inside edition, extra, access hollywood, entertainment tonight, showbiz tonight as actual news. we have a culture of false idols and they all eventually get exposed for it.
big time sucker(formely MABT)
magic johnson as well
George Oscar Bluth
But that they are “exposed” as not being the perfect humans we hoist them up to be says far more about US than it does them. At bottom, I suppose you can be mad at them for taking advantage of the weakness and idiocy we as a society (over generalize much, Gob?), but not much else if you’re being honest.
Chet’s Inflated Ego
I think that bts is making a very valid point.
In other words, it’s what B&B say all the time: don’t use jocks as role models for your kids.
The Bright One
Chet you will not get a refund for your 2 minutes you lost.
wheelingdad
George..”that crappy bible quote” is the basis of the old testament and gods covenant with Israel.
Thanks BTS. It is Christmas and why not a bible reference.
It does fit. We tend to raise athletes, actors, musicians, etc., to idol worship of sorts, forgetting what really matters..
How easy it is all torn down.
Flynn
Why is this a blockbuster? Tiger has cheated and lied to everyone he has ever come in contact with, or so it would appear. Why then should we be shocked that he cheated at golf as well? The sad part of this if it turns out to be true, is that he cheated on his one true love. Not Elin, the game of Golf.
Chet’s Inflated Ego
I seem to remember that Flynn predicted this very set of events about a week ago.
Scoopie
its true, athletes are not role models at all. I mean, once in a while you will get someone who does a lot of good and is a choir boy his whole life, but i’d say that less than 1%. it may seem cliche, but some of the best true role models are teachers. think of this, mostly all people can remember someway that one of their teachers influenced them over their life, albeit negative or positive.
Chet’s Inflated Ego
Juan Pierre plus cash to cover more than half his contract to The White Sox from The Dodgers.
An upgrade from Pods for sure.
2nd Half Adjustment
I HATE YOU SO MUCH THIS OFFSEASON KENNY WILLIAMS!!!! THIS IS NOT 2004, STOP PUTTING TOGETHER A TEAM THAT WOULD BE GOOD IN 2004!!!! GO GET ADRIAN GONZALEZ, D.AMNIT!!!!!!
Atheist & Proud
Please – keep the religious **** to yourself. Sure it is Xmas time, but there is nothing holy about it other than the Church trying to co-opt the pagan holiday/rituals of the winter solstace.
You shouldn’t put athletes in high regard – they are flawed humans like we all are. You also shouldn’t put some imaginary, invisible, bearded (by crackie…) man living in the clouds in any high regard either…
General Soreness
That is why you shouldn’t put athletes, actors, politicians, priests, etc. up on a pedestal….they are all humans. Just because they are well know by society does not make them infallible. The reason most of them are where they are in life is because they are driven by their own narcissism. Those types are exactly the ones who will easily justify giving into temptation. It is all part of there need for approval, hence Tiger sleeping with some really trashy women despite having an amazing looking wife at home. As far as performance enhancers, I have been telling my wife and friends that Tiger is no doubt on the juice for years. They all said i was crazy. Who’s crazy now???
big time sucker(formely MABT)
to each their own, atheist, to each their own, i was simply using the bible to accuate my point that worshipping people has a cost to it. Now if you want to get into it about religion, that’s a different story. you don’t believe, i do and i believe if i wasted my time trying to get you to it would get contentious and i see no positives in that.
but given the nature of the conversation, one has to wonder, if tiger is a false idol, and mjeff as well and we continously fall into this pattern of worshipping false idols,
is charles barkley a profit?
anyways, here’s one athelte i admire, Des Clark, anybody hear his interview on Mully and handly, he is one athelete on the bears who doesn’t mix words and speak in half measures. his interviews are always enjoyable. now if he could only stay healthy, block his assignments on run plays and get into the endzone a few times.
Scoopie
Juan pierre is going to be paid 3 mil next year, 5 mill in 2011. I wonder what pods was asking for. They have a leadoff hitter now though.
They need a big LH bat (agon, Adunn) now. Obviously, theyll have to make another corresponding move to get rid of salary, but I would love to see Adunn at 1b. I would love more to see agon, but that will cost a few more prospects. I dont think KW is done by any means, though.
Matt Spiegel’s Annoying Laugh
Hey GOB, “But that they are “exposed” as not being the perfect humans we hoist them up to be says far more about US than it does them” doesn’t necessarily mean that we hoisted them up. In the case of Tiger, his image was shoved and crammed down our throat.
It will be interesting to see if any other athletes get outed and get knocked off their pedestel as a result of Tiger’s fall. Deadspin was talking about Peyton and Eli in particular.
Chet’s Inflated Ego
About a week ago Bob Kravitz did a column in the IndyStar about Peyton’s buddy Tiger.
There were a LOT of comments in the public postings that Peyton has a lot to worry about.
I don’t know, have no info, just thought it was interesting that the local yokels there were posting as if they knew something.
Matt Spiegel’s Annoying Laugh
That’s what the Deadspin article alluded to. No one’s really talking at this point, but it’ll be interesting to see if anything comes out.
George Oscar Bluth
Well put, Spiegel’s laugh. Yeah, I hope the media players apply the same gumshoe standards to other high profile athletes.
meesohawnee
That was the first Mary Mitchell column ive read in a long time that poses some really legit questions. I just wished she didnt stop with Tiger. Oh and for all you Crappers out there. Target one this week. This Cori Rist on doinkin Tiger.. “I hate that im a part of it” Have fun with that boys.
big time sucker(formely MABT)
THE ONE thing that seperates peyton from tiger is humor. Peyton’s commercials at least, or at most, are funny. especially the sony whack a mole. i don’t know why but it makes me laugh everytime i see it. and the fake united way snl commercial is a thing of beauty as well. but it wouldn’t suprise me if he was a little false as well. eli? i don’t care about eli. eli is boring. he has a ring like peyton but he isn’t shoved down our throats and is hardly idolized like peyton.

Guys, I’m looking forward to the “Quote of the Year” show tomorrow. I’m not sure which quotes got nominated, but you’ve got to feature **** Stockton’s “Ball Four…Strike Three!” gem that aired last July when the White Sox & Orioles played on FOX Sports’ “Saturday Baseball Game of the Week”. That quote alone absolutely made me giggle every time it was played on your show, and I heard it live as it happened. Speaking of the Sox, I don’t know if you heard about Juan Pierre coming to the South Side and two minor leaguers going to the Dodgers in return. I know he played very well when Manny Ramirez was suspended for 50 games by MLB “Commissioner” Bud Selig’s office for violating the drug policy, but his best days are in the scrapbook, and I’m not so sure he’s that much of an improvement over Scott Podsednik at the top of the White Sox 2010 starting lineup. Meanwhile, contrary to what your sources have been saying, I think Vinny Del Negro’s on borrowed time, and 3 more bad losses seal his fate as head coach of the Chicago Bulls. If they lose to the Knicks & Hawks at home the end of this week, Uncle Jerry has to make a move, even if John Paxson has to come down from the front office to coach this paper-thin roster that he drafted. As much as I want Byron Scott to coach this team long term and accelerate the development of Derrick Rose, Byron’s joining the four-letter “All Sports Network” down the dial next month as a studio analyst, according to awfulannouncing.com.
big time sucker(formely MABT)
why? the only reason i can see is getting the viable coach now and shaking things up will keep the FA window open, but the viable coach has to be van gundy. My friend last night reminded me that doug collins*i didn’t need that reminder* and avery johnson*i did need that reminder* already interviewed with paxson for the job last year and either couldn’t agree to terms*collins* or didn’t satisfy the requirements of john paxson*johnson* which i knwo is a head scratcher considering del negro. but here’s a question i have if anybody in the know knows, has skiles contract finally come off the books yet? is it at the end of this year or next year. i know del negro’s fired or not comes off the books this year for sure, and if skiles is off the books either already or at the end of this year, reinsdorf might be compelled to spend, but like kenny williams, paxson and his fall guy have to be persistant with reinsdorf. they should even use the
you let kenny spend ridiculous money for alex rios, i think you owe us one, logic.
big time sucker(formely MABT)
but if del negro is not fired, it’s only because his contract is up anyways and what’s the use
General Soreness
Kenny, Kenny, Kenny!!! You disappoint me. I have visions of A Gonz, Carl Crawford, Figgins, Upton, etc. that have been keeping me warm on these cold winter nights and then you come home with Juan Pierre?!? I am saying it right now…that is a BIG mistake. Almost as bad as bringing in Darrin Erstad.
General Soreness
Don’t complain when the Sox aren’t drawing big crowds next year, Kenny. You know that we show up when there is a competieive team on the field. Juan wasn’t even that good in his prime….now he is years past his prime. Big mistake.
Chet’s Inflated Ego
I agree with The General and others.
Juan Pierre is too little, too late (in his career).
Nice guy, grindy, but last year might have been his last hurrah for being real productive.
General Soreness
competitive….sorry grammar police
big time sucker(formely MABT)
general, once again why i chose the name big time sucker. cubs last year, bears this year, bulls this year, juan pierre, time and time again, just led down the primrose path, and time and time again, disappointed. all he had to do was watch some cubs games a few years ago and he would have figured it out. well in this regard, ozzie does like to layeth the buntith down frequently so maybe he will have a decent obp and get some steals.
General Soreness
I know BTS. He was horrible with the Cubs. Well, we are stuck with him now. At least he can steal and lay down bunts, I guess. I hope he works really hard to prove me wrong this off season. And don’t worry about all these guys who don’t like your bible quotes. This is the time of year to be throwing them out there. And, yes, I am a God fearing man and you can find me and the kids at church every Sunday. Nothing wrong with that.
NoClass
Unfortunately, I sorta agree with bts (formely MABT) that Vinny Del Idiot will last the entire season. It’s all about the money & even if Rose was averaging 20pts & 10asts per game, Tyrus grew a brain & was 100% healthy, Salmons & Miller were playing like they did last year, the best the Bulls could do was another 1st round playoff exit. Unlike the Bears, the Bulls can tank the season & get a high 1st round pick. Then, during the summer, they hire a real coach & get 1 of those superstar free agents.
I got the Lakers slaughtering the Bulls by 25pts tonight.
BTW, I offically forgave Mel Gibson for all his “sins” after I saw Apocalypto. Man, that was an awesome KICK@$$ movie.
Chris in Scottsdale
Pods was asking for something absurd if I remember correctly- like more than they’re paying Pierre.
Peanuthead is a decent fourth outfielder and guy off the bench at this point in his career, nothing more. If he were filling the role that Tom Goodwin had a few seasons ago with the Cubs, it would be acceptable. Unfortunately they’re asking him to play everyday. That’s not good. You want him playing in 110 games, starting perhaps half of those. While he was a godsend for the Dodgers the first month Manny was suspended (he hit like .400 the first few weeks), he soon reverted to same old peanut.
Best case scenario: an extremely misleading .300 average (because he doesn’t walk, perhaps a .330 OBP), 30-35 SB, a pus-arm in the outfield, and perhaps an opportunity to be the “grindy” mascot for Chicago sports in 2010.
As a positive, roto players will be all over him as a two-category 5th outfielder.
big time sucker(formely MABT)
25 is too giving the bulls too much credit
Beverly Brewmaster
I think Chris summed up the Pierre deal pretty well. One thing I would add is that he also brings a robust .372 career slugging percentage to one of the best hitter’s parks in the league. I generally respect Kenny Williams’ baseball acumen, but he seems to have a blind spot when it comes to grindy types. Would somebody explain to him that the ‘05 Sox won the World Series because their pitching was lights-out (especially in the playoffs) and not because of that silly Ozzie-ball nonsense?
packernation
the bears, cubs and bulls suck and they will suck for a long time. it will be vey funny when the cubs sign scotty pods to be their centerfielder. the packers will be in the playoffs and the bears will suck for a long time.

Hey packernation, are you still going to post here after the Packers get bounced from the first round of the playoffs? Let’s take a look at who they’ve beaten… First, games against the bottom of the barrel count for four wins (the Rams, the Browns, and the Lions twice). If you group the Bears into that mix–and based on your opinion of the Bears, I don’t think you would object–they’ve got six of their nine wins against garbage teams. You’ve got one more win against a sub-.500 team (the 49ers) and one against the 7-6 Ravens. The only team you beat that might realistically head to the playoffs is the 8-5 Cowboys. Beyond that, every good team you’ve played has beaten you, as have the 1-12 Bucs (!!!). Even our admittedly crappy Bears have taken you to the wire both games.
Yes, your Packers are better than my Bears. I don’t think anybody here who’s sober would disagree. But if you’re judging your season by any standard other than your ability to beat the Bears twice then you would just go away.

SPAULDING!
Open letter to Nike:
Everyone, except your factory employees, know you’ve had a license to print money since 1984.
You’re going to hoist a super athelete (yet again) onto the highest pedistal (a few notches below Elvis’s).
Here’s a tip.
Hire some private investigators. How much do they cost? I’ll bet they cost significantly less than a scandal. Or, make sure you “vet” (chke spleing) your premium athelete’s physicians.
Make sure they’re not picking up “uh some stuff” to give away.
It’s head in the oven time for us sports fans (and there’s no time for that with all the holiday baking)!
SPAULDING!
What is wrong with Kosuke Fukudome at center field?
He’s fast, has range, a good arm, pretty decent judgement. And, he had a fairly decent bat (once the ghost of Alfonso Soriano was marginalized).
Okay, my head is going back into the oven. (mmmm, gingerbread)

Spaulding… Nike will not change what they do because it works and it works because sports fans are pretty much not very bright (that includes myself) but that changes as i grow ever older but its probably to late for me to make a difference.
SPAULDING!
Something tells me Nike executives are going to lose sleep over this.

Why do some African-American females feel offended in this Tiger mess? Why is he being treated as “he never was really black?” He was Black when he was winning tournaments and being a superstar/role model, but why is he “not black” now? I wonder what would happen if Obama cheated on his wife, his SAT’s, taxes, campaign, etc? Just wondering why Tiger is not getting the support from his own race, because he only prefers blondes? Mary Mitchell’ s columns are so useless and does nothing but try to point out differences in other races/skin color whether it be good or bad.
