Monday: NFL Playoffs, Gaines Adams

What many describe as the most exciting weekend of the NFL calendar was a letdown this year, with only the final game competitive enough to meet that high standard.

I guess I’ll have to wait another week for the possiblity of a Favre meltdown, since Tony Romo beat him to it.  As for complaints that the Vikings were running up the score, I won’t hear it from professionals.  And especially not anyone who works for Jerry Jones, or enjoys the first-down histrionics of Miles Austin.

So it’s Vikes/Saints ArenaBall on a fast track.  Watch it end up 10-6.

The rested Colts were as efficient as ever.  The surprising Jets made the most of an opposing kicker’s bad day and knew how to get a clinching yard on 4th-and-1.

Trib on Mike Tice, new Bears OL coach:  “He is also expected to have a significant say in the structure of the offense.”  So, now, the DC position’s power is compromised by it’s still-under-Smith status, and the OC position’s power is shared with a positional coach.  And people want these jobs?

I am disappointed that an NFL player can have an enlarged heart and not know it.  With the amount of medical attention applied and available beginning with major-college ball, I thought that such screenings would be standard.  In the NBA, for example, cardiac tests became mandatory in 2006 to check for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, Marfan’s Syndrome, ventricular arrhythmias and valve problems.  The NFL made fast, significant strides in seeing the light on concussion dangers, and they’d be wise to act similarly here — check all these giants for the kind of heart issues in which the initial presentation is sudden death.

Plenty more today with the Cubs Convention concluded, the Bulls hitting the road, and the Hawks looking good in Detroit (though the Todd Bertuzzi shootout goal was the coolest part, even if people think he’s a jackass).

“I am disappointed that an NFL player can have an enlarged heart and not know it.”

Alas, he’s the second athlete in the last week to die from an apparent enlarged heart, as this appears to also be what killed that D-II college basketball player during a game. Perhaps it’s best to get a medical expert on to talk about how well these conditions can be detected?

Are the various player’s unions involved in physical checkups? I know that players will sometimes try to avoid physicals if they have some injury and are vying for a new contract. I wonder if there is some basic physical that would test for enlarged hearts, diabetes, the other afflictions mentioned above, etc. that would not be invasive into the sensitive areas of a player’s livlihood.

Wow, I picked one helluva time to make my first trek out to Joe Louis Arena. I’ll tell you one thing… if you think there are some meatballs in the 300 level at the UC, you should visit the Joe. While I realize he’s not representative of all Wings fans, I was stuck next to one of those guys who thinks that every time somebody on his team falls, a penalty should have been called. And for a city that calls itself “Hockeytown,” you’d think they know not to boo when play is stopped for a hand pass (evidently they thought a penalty was being called on the Wings). Overall, the Hawks were definitely off their game–when’s the last time they were outshot by an opponent?–but still managed a win on the road against a now-healthy Detroit. That counts as progress in my book.

Each year in the United States, hundreds of young people die suddenly and unexpectedly due to cardiac arrhythmias.
These conditions include Long QT Syndrome (LQTS), Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), Brugada Syndrome, etc.
LQTS is now known to be 3 times more common in the US than childhood leukemia.
HCM is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in people under 35.
Most cardiac problems that may cause sudden death in the young can be diagnosed and treated.
With treatment, people with these conditions can have normal, productive lives.

Didn’t Jermaine keep emphasizing he wants full time duties somewhere in “O Ten” (why do seemingly smart people all around me keep saying “O Ten” when referring to the year?)??

This is a head-scratcher for me. If Jermaine’s going to be a bench player, he may as well be the Sox DH against lefties and very very very part timer in RF if and when Q gets hurt this year.

Beverly, glad you survived a trip to the Joe. Are you really that surprised with the way their fans act? The Ded Wings have been MASTERS for over a decade now of drawing penalties with all their diving, whining and b*tching. Bunch of Euro-trash that that did nothing but chirp for the last 10 years every time an opposing player put a stick on them. And to top it off, that team has been the biggest abuser of using the pick to create offensive chances… they have gotten away with that cr@p for over 10 years now. The rest of the league always gets the interference call but these pu**ies practice that move. Notice how they complained and whined and cried to the officials yesterday about the ‘Hawks getting 3 PP in a row. What happens? The ‘Hawks get called for 3 penalties one right after another. Not even 2 seconds clicked off the clock before the f’ing ref had his arm in the air again. Complete BS. I can’t wait until Draper and Maltby finally get off the ice for good. I just want to see Maltby get the living sh*t beat out of him before he goes. Yeah, ‘Hawks definitely did not have their best game yesterday but Niemi kept them in it despite Bertuzzi’s 360 at the goal line and Sharp pots the winner. Loved watching Howard turn his stick into kindling. What’s even better is that Detroit got ripped off in the SO against Dallas the night before and ended up losing. Seeing the replays of that made my night! Now it’s time to march into Ottawa and take 2 points out of there!

Are there any clauses in the Gaines Adams contract that deal with any death related issues? I ask this beacuse the Buccs have a 2nd round pick and the Bears have a dead player. Yes it’s unfortunate that the boy died, but that’s the biggest lose lose scenario i can think of! “here’s a porential prospect, you give us a 2nd round pick, and ooops, now he’s dead….that’s for the 2nd round pick now while you, the Bears, have nothing now.” Can the Bears get that 2nd round pick back?

Jan 18, 2010 14:12

Guys, I was as stunned as anyone to learn of Gaines Adams’ sudden passing. I found out about Gaines’ death on the “FOX NFL Sunday” pregame show with Insider Jay Glazer. I know that while he did little statistically as a reserve in 10 games for the Bears since the trade with the Buccaneers, I thought the trade was going to mean more next season with Adewale Ogunleye likely to leave. The part of this tragedy that makes it harder to swallow is what the Bears knew or maybe didn’t know about the enlarged heart doctors supposedly found in his system. It makes me wonder what the Bears can do moving forward to compensate for Adams’ loss given what they had planned for the most recent #99 in Halas colors.

Is it just me or did anybody else upon hearing of Adams death wonder if steroids might have anything to do with it?

From what I am reading It seems that ,yes, steroids can cause an enlarged heart.
Is this being talked about ?

Chet’s Inflated Ego

No, first I have heard of that link.
Of course the word “can” in medical issues is a difficult one.

I truly don’t know, one way or another, if there is a real cause/effect.

I have been reading about steroid effects for the last 20 minutes.
It seems clear that steroid use has adverse effects on the heart and can cause an enlarged heart.
There are many stories of athletes dying at early age from heart related causes.
It is likely most of them can be attributed to steroids.

I think a lot of it has to do with growing up…and which sports are in your bone marrow.
So few people were fortunate to live in areas where hockey was mainstream (and in the ‘burbs it is so expensive to participate).
I’m of the generation (born 1956) in which baseball is in my bone marrow. I still look at box scores, I listen to games on radio all the time, and I enjoy 365-days a year hot-stove. As a kid we used to play all day long, weather permitting.

While I can’t speak to the rest of the world, hockey has quite a following in Europe. Watched parts of my first hockey game yesterday. That Todd Bertuzzi shootout goal was pretty Bad A$$, I would have to say. Takes a lot of guts to try something like that.

I WILL take tebow as a quarterback, arem strength: Russel was able to throw 50 yrds sitting down, how many projected quarterbacks who went #1 were busts??? McNown, Russel, Leaf, Joey Harrington, All the Cincinatti Quarterbacks before Palmer.

SAY, you might me right I dont know, all the experts say not, but they are often wrong. I just dont want to be preached at, which is somewhat hypocritical as I earlier posted about how much I revered MLK.

Jan 18, 2010 17:22

theology or something else lame I believe, that part isn’t too important, what he did was [along with many others] allow us as Americans to be able to say with pride and honesty, that we live in a truly free country!!! I call him DR mainly out of respect, I am aware of the fact that Bill Cosby is also a doctor, the only product he ever produced that reached me was Fat Albert.

I agree MLK was a great person and accomplished things that made “The world a better place” although i think the same things would have happened although later without him.

you’re right Bink, but the longer time would’ve meant more troubles, and if the change was made under the leadership of Malcom X [and others] it would have been even more painful.

Wide open first quarter.
Warrriors lead 33-27.
Think the Bulls will eventually pull this one in.
No defense or offensive rebounds for Golden State

NBA trivia–In 1978-79 Rick Barry missed only 9 free throws.
He was 160 out of 169 for a .947 percentage.

Another great prediction by a true idiot. If you gambled and bet the opposite of what score police lieutentant wheelingdad says, you wouldn’t have to work a day over 30 with all the money you would win.

Thanks Chets Ego, Timmie glad to see you post as yourself, but why rip so hard on the dude just for having a good feeling ’bout his Bulls, I give credit for the mention of one of the best white guys to ever step on the hardwood, Ricks’ freethrow style was unorthodox [outside of the nuns at a catholic grammer school] but very effective!! Wasn’t he getting into coaching? whatever became of that? gotta be better than VDN

And I am aware that Cubs fans adored Sammy Steroid, but back then only baseball insiders, and the most observant among us fans knew what was going on. I really had no Idea till a few years later.

has anybody gotten tired of huet yet? i think that he’s not as good a goalie as niemi, but the problem is, the hawks won’t make niemi the full-time starter because huet has to earn his money this season, but his shaky goal-tending has me thinking, “I DON’T CARE”. get niemi between the pipes, and even if the rotating goalie works for a while, i wouldn’t want to see that in the playoffs, i want a number one stud goalie, plus everybody knows unless niemi gets dealt, he is the young goalie of the blackhawks future, so why not get him started now? anybody got any input on this subject?

Jan 19, 2010 7:31

wheelingdad,

I agree with you. Since I only get WGN America, we had Bewitched, Cheers, and (while Zambrano was pitching his no-hitter)–ugh–Becker(!)

So, I found streaming coverage on NBA.com for da bu’ (it’s kind of cool/ confusing). I saw no defense and a lot of missed shots (from under the basket!)
Every sport has too many teams. Baseball and hockey would be best served if they extended the playoffs, but cut into the regular season. If you’re team isn’t at a certain win/ loss ratio after 80% of your games, hit the links early.
No more tenth hour rallies by the Rockies, only to fall to a one-game playoff with the Padres.
The Cubs would still be chillin’ in October, but at least they can generate a “post season streak.”
(YIKES!)

Here is a link to more information about the genetics of Brugada Syndrome that was prepared by our genetic counselor and which has links to some useful resources for those dealing with this condition: http://www.accessdna.com/condition/Brugada_Syndrome/70. There is also a phone number listed if you need to speak to a genetic counselor by phone. I hope it helps. Thanks, AccessDNA
