Tebow Tolerance

I have no idea where you stand on the abortion issue.  I honestly don’t care either (that’s your business).  My own feelings on it are conflicted, but that’s not really important either because I’m not here to tell you how to feel about one of the most divisive issues in our country.

I was happy to see that CBS will air the Focus on the Family ad that features Tim Tebow’s story.  If you don’t know the story, Tebow’s mother had a difficult pregnancy and was advised to abort.  Because of her religious views, she didn’t and then tada, Tim Tebow, was born and went on to be a National Champion and Heisman Trophy winner.

I haven’t seen the finished product, so it’s hard for me to pass judgement on it, but I’m interested to see it.  That being said, I don’t think it will drastically change my views on the ”Pro-Choice/Pro-Life” issue.

What makes me happy is that a middle-to-right leaning message isn’t being shouted down and out of the Superbowl.  Now, I’m not naive.  The spot is costing somewhere between $2.5-3 Million dollars.  Revenue is a big part of broadcasting and money sometimes makes decisions easier.  I have plenty of friends and colleagues who are the Left of this issue and many others.  What I hear from them is “tolerance”.  The reason that I’m happy to see that CBS is going forward with this is because it allows those who don’t agree with or believe in the message to practice what they preach:  tolerance.

I’ve already gotten too political, but it bothers me that over the last few years, political discourse in this country is no longer a debate…it’s a screaming match.  It has de-evolved into name-calling and intolerance of  differing opinions.  I’m glad that this ad has already caused me to be more thoughtful about my own views and open up to the ideas of others.  I’ll definitely have the volume up on this commercial to see how the message is conveyed.

Great Post…I agree. You don’t have to agree with the message, just listen and move on. It may open your mind to other opinions.

First, it’s about CBS being desperate for ad revenues.

Second, I don’t want politics in my sports.

Smeghead – It’s the Super Bowl. CBS could easily drop the spot and fill it with another one for just as much money.

i said this the other day and i will say it again, first admendment and a free enterprise economy we live in. If they have the money, and there is nothing indecent about the ad, CBS should have the time, it’s that simple. If i have 3 mil and i want to post an ad about how i think cats are creepy, cbs should air that as well.

Todd McShay on Booyah blistered Tebow’s chances in the NFL…said he has a slow hitch in his delivery and that his accuracy is a joke.
First time I heard anyone on Booyah tell the unvarnished truth.

“CBS could easily drop the spot and fill it with another one for just as much money.”

You’re assuming that there are tons of suitors lining up this year. Considering that they accepted this ad, I would venture to say that nobody is knocking down CBS’s door this year.

Pepsi chose to not advertise for this Super Bowl, for example. You’d think CBS would rather have a Tebow ad rather than a Pepsi ad?

I’m a little puzzled by the supposed fascination, for lack of a better word, with Florida QB Tim Tebow. If Tebow has an NFL future, it won’t be at quarterback, considering his lack of arm & lack of accuracy on the next level. As far as the commercial in question, the Super Bowl is still very much as big of an advertising day as the game itself, and many companies have paid CBS a lot of money to air such ads. I know that abortion is a very touchy subject in this country, and CBS should go ahead and air the controversial Focus on the Family spot on one condition. If the message in question meets broadcast standards, go ahead and air it and let Joe Viewer decide. I was watching FOX32 News after the NFC Championship game Sunday night, and CBS has already thumbed their nose on a supposedly risque CareerBuilder.com commercial that didn’t meet such standards. I think you can check out myfoxchicago.com to see the commercial I’m referring that you won’t see February 7th.

SMEG, i am agreeing with you on fact, but on principle which i guess most buisnesses don’t have, principal or capital to run such an ad because if you have looked at the NFL’s ratings and the NFC championship game had an estimated 60 million people watching!!! i think that’s the highest non superbowl game since the 1982 NFC dwight clark in the endzone championship, it would be insane to not advertise. The group will spread their message to a TON of people this year. But if i had 3 million to kick around, i would do my cats are creepy ad in a heartbeat. HATE THOSE THINGS

Pro-life or “pro-choice”, there really is no dilemma if you recognize
the fact that God is the Author of Life. No one has a right to play
God and make the decision to end a human life, whether it be a
preborn child in his mother’s womb or a person who may be near
the end of his life.

Just because 5 people in black robes decided that a woman has a
right to abortion does not make it morally right. Does not that child
have the right to life by virtue of the fact that God created him?
Children are not chattel property. The pregnant woman does not “own”
the child or the child’s rights because he is in her womb. That right
to life comes from the child’s Creator.

Then I assume you oppose the death penalty? Going to war? Any violence whatsoever?

It’s funny how many of the pro-life crowd aren’t quite so pro-life when other circumstances are put before them.

“Does not that child have the right to life by virtue of the fact that God created him?”

And you are the type of person as to why I do not want political BS airing during the Super Bowl.

I would point out that I saw a story the other day that CBS denied an ad from CareerBuilder.com which suggested guys setting their farts on fire and their female co-worker eager to find a new job.

So…farts on fire? Too controversial. Third rail of American politics…okeedokee.

I’m not that worried about it –as annoying as Tebow is, he seems like his heart is probably in the right place– but the purchaser, Dr. James Dobson, is repugnant. And folks, the First Amendment doesn’t guarantee you the right to a TV ad – it merely guarantees that Congress can’t pass a law abridging your free speech.

Whenever you’re tempted to complain about a lack of free speech, remember the first five words of the First Amendment: Congress shall pass no law…

Jan 28, 2010 11:08

I guess my question would be this: Would CBS run the ad if that little baby that Mrs. Tebow had decided not to abort had grown up to become a Rhodes Scholar/Scientist/Doctor/doer of good deeds?
doubtful. But because he’s a Heisman Trophy Winner the ad runs?

I can’t wait to see the commercial. I will preface this post by saying I am a huge Tim Tebow fan, but I do understand that he may not be an NFL quarterback. But, I think he is going to play an important role in our country – one way or another. I have spent quite a bit of time in Gainesville because both of my kids go to school there. I have had an opportunity to meet him a few times. This guy in unbelievable. At the meet & greets, he stays afterwards to sign autographs and provide photo opps. His celebrity status in Gainesville is off the charts. He is great with children (who adore him) and if he talks to 1,000 people, person #1,000 is greeted like they are person #1. He is a very religious person (which does trouble people) and even the majority of students at UF think that this commercial is stepping over his bounds. I realize that people are tired of hearing all the Tim Tebow stuff – the Boers & Bernstein Show is a prime example. I do hope he get an opportunity to play in the NFL. It looks like the Arizona Cardinals may be interested now that Warner looks to be retiring. But I can’t wait to see what this guy does after his football career. He is a leader the like we have never seen.

i wouldn’t be so fast to classify him along side jack kemp yet, temper your enthusiasm. Ask Patrick Kane what life is like once you leave the protective bubble that immediatly gets burst once you become a professional athelte. he get’s through that unscaved, he might make one heck of a minister, but let’s not start the tebow for senator or president campaign for like another 100 years.

Jan 29, 2010 13:29

Lawrence,
Thanks for an excellent post. You’re making my recent mid-day switch to other stations tougher to do.
I had to endure 2 days of Boers and Bernstein repeatedly bash the person Tim Tebow because they’re so threatened by his Christianity and his values. I think it’s refreshing for an athlete to publicly portray his values, especially knowing that this particular value saved his life. I also find it odd that so many journalists are threatened by Tebow, Warner, etc, publicly praising God. Many believe that God provides them with talent and perseverence required to succeed. I think Christians have a responsibility to acknowledge this, not be embarrassed by it. Thanks again.

big time sucker(formely MABT)
Jan 29, 2010 14:51

tony as a christian i stand with you on that, but here’s the deal and here’s where journalists are coming from. they have seen wayyyyyyyyyyy more than they report, and well, do you remember Jim Bakker in the 80’s with Jessica Hahn? Do you remember some of the other televangelists who couldn’t keep their pants on? Now, take someone who is preachy in about as high a profile as Tebow is, look at the perceived rumors over his surgically enhanced wondergirlfriend, the nature of the lockerroom and you have the makings of a gigantic hypocrit. Maybe he isn’t, but i am sure journalists have seen too much hypocrisy in their days to guess that someone isnt’ being geniune. Now pile that on with the gushing love broadcasters shower on him and it’s a very much too good to be completly true scenerio. Maybe it isn’t too good to be true. Maybe he is as geniuenly christian as you will find. Maybe he is pure and pristeen, but the odds o that being true are stacked against him.

The story continues. So CBS also deems an ad (which is, for all intents and purposes, a copy of a Snickers ad from last year mocking men for discovering they were ***) for a *** dating service inappropriate and will not air it.

To recap: Ad implying farts being lit aflame: too controversial.
Ad for a *** dating web site: too controversial.
Ad with Tim and Pam Tebow moralizing: A-OK.

CBS, by the way, also denied an ad in 2004 for the United Church of Christ that portrayed their controversial policy of —GASP— accepting all people who want to worship.

What a load of ****.

Bill F
Jan 29, 2010 17:17

OK, so the omitted words above are, in order:

*** = word also meaning happy
*** = word also meaning happy
*** = word also meaning happy

and

**** = word meaning excrement, as in B&B’s “who you ****ing?”

Bill F
Jan 29, 2010 17:20

And to those who think this is perfectly cool, you’d also be cool if Tim Tebow was named, say…Hakeem Muhammad and instead of praising Jesus, he shouted “A Salaam Alaikum” or “Allahu Akbar” into the cameras, right?

Seth
Jan 30, 2010 2:09

Laurence –

Great post. A simple expression of a very eloquent point. This is the piece that B&B should’ve been drooling over today, not Telander’s.

By the way folks, as for the ads CBS isn’t running, those spots were created with the intent of getting rejected. CareerBuilder, ManCrunch and GoDaddy got exactly what they wanted: millions of dollars in free exposure by making a commercial that’s too “controversial” to air.

If you believe there is never a reason to abort a pregnancy then I totally respect your position and noone is forcing you to do anything. If you feel there is a reason to abort your pregnancy then I respect your right to do so. We have the best possible system in place, EVERYONE gets to practice their choice. I am not a woman and should never feel the right to tell all woman how they should act.

John
Mar 12, 2010 13:52

Very thoughtful and insightful posting. I agree that lately tolerance is only tolerance if you agree with the position “most” tolerable by those most represented. The voices being broadcast over the air are primarily people who lean to the liberal or left on most issues. Consequently to have a thought or opinion that is geared to the “right”, the media either don’t report it or the media promotes voices who denegrate anyone with a conservative or right view point. Common decency and discussion is something both sides of issues seem to struggle with.
