Horns of a Dilemma

Now at .500 after their fourth consecutive road victory, the February 18th NBA trading deadline presents new and different challenges and choices for Garpax and the Bulls.

They are playing their best ball of the year during one of the schedule’s toughest portions.  Their best player is playing as they envisioned, the starting lineup is working, the bench rotations are making more sense, and the coach is staying out of the way.

And they may have to disrupt this positive path to have a shot at a title.  Cap space is an issue, and not just because of John Salmons’ potential opt-in:  depending on how things shake out, the Bulls could be in a position to add two major free agents, or trade for one star now with the hopes of adding another later.  Acquiring some expiring deals in exchange for hard assets is risky and unsatisfying, but it may be the smart path.

Saints TE coach Terry Malone is the latest name in the Bears’ OC clown parade.  University of Pittsburgh OC Frank Cignetti may follow Vikings QB coach Kevin Rogers for a Halas Hall interview.  And they may end up waiting for the Colts’ Clyde Christiansen.  My head hurts.

Any candidates for defensive coordinator coming to town?  Any rumored to be?  Anything?

Thanks to our fun-loving, shirtless Blackhawks, the Score’s website set an all-time record for pageviews yesterday.  We’ll see if the hairless wonders can keep the party rolling through San Jose late tonight.

We will do “Who You Crappin?” today at 5:00, and tomorrow’s Friday Fung is “Sports Apologies” at 4:00.

The Bulls need to roll the dice and trade assets for the possibility of getting/signing real stars.
Otherwise they will just be in basketball hell.

Wanny’s OC at Pitt as The Bears OC??? Bears, WYC?
I wonder if he says “don” for “down” like Wanny?

You get on the horn with the Suns and make it happen NOW, GarPax. Then go full-bore after a legit shooting guard this summer.

“CBSSports.com wire reports

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey has hired five new assistants and retained two others.

The team announced Wednesday that Curtis Modkins will be the offensive coordinator and running backs coach, Bob Bicknell the tight ends coach and Joe D’Alessandris the offensive line coach. Giff Smith will be a defensive assistant and Kevin Patullo in charge of offensive quality control.

George Catavolos remains the secondary coach and Bob Sanders will continue to serve on the defensive staff.

Modkins, Giff, and D’Alessandris worked at Georgia Tech while Gailey was the head coach from 2002 through 2007″

one thing in early in yesterdays game that i saw as effective and that getting a staudamire or even a (gulp) bosh could help with big time, teams are going to start double teaming or as stacey king called it, bracketing d rose with bigs, most likely 4’s. The reason for this is obviously Taj Gibson is the least threat out there. If you have Staudamire or (gulp) Bosh, those double teams aren’t there, and if you dump down into the post, Rose has showed he can hit his shot if that post player gets bracket as well.

Barely.
This is still the “hire people you know” c rap.
I’m glad that JA didn’t allow Lovie to go hire Martz just because they know each other from The Rams.

But your broader point is well-taken…at least The Bills are getting things done (even if badly).

I fully believe that if you dont have Kobe, Wade or Leborn you are fooling yourself that you will have championship material. Stoudamire will not bring a championship, Bosh, Joe Johnson will not bring a championship, although I do like thm for the bulls. You can trade for everyone but if you dont have those big three names you wont win a championsip.

Chet’s Inflated Ego
Jan 28, 2010 9:40

The other reason I prefer a trade for Amare Stoudemire is that I don’t trust Garpax to get a primo free agent…I suspect they would just sign a 2010 version of a Wallace type of free agent.

The Celtics put it together w/o one of the big-3 (I admit that Garnett was still tops then).
The Bulls template would be the Larry Brown Pistons of a few years ago…team w/o top-star.

MEthinks since the pistons, what point guard led team has won the championship? The past winners were Power forwards and shooting guards. And to be honest it took a three headed team (GArnett, Allen and Pierce to beat the LAkers). I just dont see any other team beating the lakers. I think he will have to compliment the other player, not the other player compliment D-Rose. Stoudamire will not bring a championship. iF THE Bulls can bring D-Wade and some one else along with Rose, then that will be a serious contender.

i JUST look at how he’s playing, the competitivness that he plays with, we all know he hates losing, he might just be a revolution of the position. There just isn’t right now a player like him in the league and the scary thing is, is that there is a ton for him to improve on. And i am looking at the whole package. Every run OKC took at the bulls last night, HE THWARTED!!! He took it upon himself to say, this is where i am going to assert myself and get my team back on track. IF he can do that on a regular basis and take over games in those spots, with his skill level and his athelitic ability, you won’t need a dwayne wade

If you broke it down into ‘tiers’, this is how I see the top FA’s:

1) LeBron, Wade, Bosh… No consolation prizes here.
2) Amare, Joe Johnson… Guys you’ll likely have to “boat”, and hate yourself the morning after.

3) There is no 3. You need two of the above to go with Rose & Noah at the core. Trade Deng for a sack of potatoes…

Actually, they mentioned this Amare thing yesterday here on the sports talkers, and Deng’s name came up more than once. They said “Nice player”, but his cap numbers are a little bigger than you’d like. However, they also acknowledged he may be better than anyone that PHX would be able to sign in the 2010 FA class (Johnson is NOT coming back here- he felt that the organization held him back, they have no shot at the big 3, and if they wanted to keep Amare, they would have made it clear by now).

Deng for Amare is a legit possibility, and I think the Bulls should do it, whether or NOT they can/want to re-sign him. Clear those books, give Phoenix a player better than they’ll be able to obtain in the FA class, and everyone walks away happy. Plus, Kerr is Garpax West… as much as I hate to say it, rather inept.

Likquid Swordz
Jan 28, 2010 10:10

PG – Rose
SG – D Wade or Joe Johnson
SF – Deng or Draft Pick or Salmons (puke!)
PF – Stoudamire
C – Noah

I see All-Stars at PG, SG, and PF. I think this will be more than enough to win the East, considering an aging Cetics team and the distinct possibility that LeBron will be a Knick…..it can all happen next season if Garpax doesnt wet themselves. If you have to take on expiring contracts for Hinrich, Deng, or Salmons, to get Stoudamire this year – you’d be an idiot not to move fast on this. Just make sure you sign Amar’e to a nice contract extension

Here’s an interesting link when considering Amare Stoudemire:

http://www.ktar.com/?sid=1239126&nid=788

One of the local stations is doing a bit called “Amare’Can Idol”, where they judge his performance after every game, and decide whether he’s worthy of the max contract he’s seeking…

It’s got an easy-to-read breakdown of his numbers… and they’re not sold on him, and that’s in the SUNS system!

If you can’t put up insane numbers in the Suns’ system, what are you going to do in a slower tempo, especially if you can’t play defense (like Amare)?

Shawn Marion was traded away for Shaq a couple of years ago, and while people ripped the trade, Shaq had a bit of a resurrection, while Marion (as well as his numbers) has faded into mid-level exception obscurity.

Besides the noticeable improvement in D. Rose, is it possible that Vinny is also showing improvement as a coach rather than “just staying out of the way”. He was, after all, a pro basketball player and has been around the game his whole life and while he doesn’t strike me as a nobel laureate, neither does he seem like an imbecile either.

BTW, the girls in the Hawks limo, while not Maxim magazine material, seem like the kind of young women you see around a college campus, not entirely unattractive although certainly not “Wow” material. From the start havent we been saying on here that Del Negro’s one and one job is to make Derrick Rose a better player. An All-Star! Well, here we are, its happening. Yes, he still has trouble diagramming a play during a timeout, he still has trouble with end of game situations, but if we are to judge him on how he has handled Rose we must be objective and admit he’s done a little more than “stay out of the way”.

boozer is staying in utah, bosh is going to miami to play with wade, lebron is staying in cleveland. i think the bulls can get stoudemire, but they have to do it in season before the deadline, because otherwise another team will scoop him up, and as far as joe johnson, not sure, he’s one of those guys that might go buddy up with another team, we’ll see.

but if the bulls can somehow miraculously trade for stoudemire or bosh, they might have a chance at lewering a big free agent shooting guard, if they sign either bosh or stoudemire, truth is, miami is in the top 3 who have money to spend, so they’ll most likely keep wade no matter what, but the bulls could get joe johnson or ray allen, so while it’s unlikely to land any big fish, the bulls can still get a couple of good players this summer if gar-pax plays it right, yeehe, hard to have trust in the guy that couldn’t fire vinny.

and watch out for kobe, if the lakers don’t offer him and extension, bryant could get ticked and excersize his player option, we’ll see.

Regardless of what happens tomorrow night in New Orleans, the Bulls will return home with a WINNING RECORD on their second extended road trip of the season following their win in Oklahoma City. If the Bulls win tomorrow night, they’ll be a game over .500 coming home to rematch the Clippers Tuesday night at United Center. I’m not about to get carried away by any means, but their improved play makes me wonder myself what the Bulls will do with the NBA Trading Deadline on the horizon shortly after the All-Star break. Needless to say, the Bulls have some tough decisions ahead for the rest of this season, especially because they still want to be a player in the big free agent class this summer with a great deal of money to boot.

As for Derrick Rose, while I’m not surprised that he & Taj Gibson have been selected to play in the Rookie/Sophomore Game as part of NBA All-Star Weekend in Dallas next month, it’ll be a shame if #1 and/or Joakim Noah are passed over for reserves when TNT announces the rest of the squads for next month’s All-Star Game itself at the new Cowboys Stadium during tonight’s doubleheader. Both Rose & Noah are All-Star worthy.

Were the snorting coke of of their @sses? Jamming those bottles of that canadian beer up their sn@tches? NO! Most rich, famous people take advantage of the perks that come along with the territory. And most do so even after marriage. This is not news.

I’m from the area, and I was jus’ kiddin’ ;)

The ones that get me are refugees from four of the 5 boroughs or Jersey. As a second job, I bartend/wait tables. The Chicago “meatball” stereotype is mostly fabrication. In the case of NY/NJ… it’s DEAD-ON. Those people are obnoxious, callous, and honestly have no idea how the rest of the country views them, or don’t care.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ll wait on a couple on vacation obviously from NY/NJ, almost get into a shouting match with them, disagree with them on everything, have them run me ragged, bring out the worst in me… and leave $25 on a $75 tab. Here I am thinking they hate me, and that’s just the way they are. It’s like watching “Summer of Sam”… that’s the most accurate portrayal of a meatball ever.
